Book Development of a Cost Model for a Hinterland Container Transport from a Seaport

Download or read book Development of a Cost Model for a Hinterland Container Transport from a Seaport written by Niklas Eickers and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,7, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: In the scope of this thesis, the transport modes of hinterland transportation are analyzed with regard to their benefits and disadvantages. This analysis does not only show their compatibility with hinterland traffic but also their cost factors on the way from a seaport to the hinterland. It is shown which phases a container is passing as well as which expanses are entailed by these operations. As a first step, a large theoretical basic knowledge shall be created. Therefore, all locations and operators of the supply chain for a hinterland container are introduced, general requirements as well as processes and problems are presented, too. After presenting the transportation means and their expanses, the developed cost model is applied on an example. The case example shall illustrate single characteristics of each transport mode and shows the proportion of costs. Finally, the total transport costs for the selected route are determined and the transport modes can be compared again. Moreover, a recommendation for the carrier choice of this example is given. This recommendation is specially focused on the aspects costs and time which represent the most important factors in the logistics sector.

Book Maritime Networks Port Efficiency and Hinterland Connectivity in the Mediterranean

Download or read book Maritime Networks Port Efficiency and Hinterland Connectivity in the Mediterranean written by Jean-François Arvis and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For millennia, the Mediterranean has been one of the most active trading areas, supported by a transport network connecting riparian cities and beyond to their hinterland. The Mediterranean has complex trade patterns and routes--but with key differences from the past. It is no longer an isolated world economy: it is both a trading area and a transit area linking Europe and North Africa with the rest of the world through the hub-and-spoke structure of maritime networks. Understanding how trade connectivity works in the Mediterranean, and elsewhere, is important to policy makers, especially those in developing countries in the Mediterranean, concerned with the economic benefits of large investment in infrastructure. Better connectivity is expected to increase trade with distant markets and stimulate activities in the hinterland. This book is a practical exploration of the three interdependent dimensions of trade connectivity: maritime networks, port efficiency, and hinterland connectivity. Because of the complexity and richness of maritime and trade patterns in the Mediterranean, the research book combines both a regional focus and globally scalable lessons. This book is intended for a wide readership of policy makers in maritime affairs, trade, or industry; professionals from the world of finance or development institutions; and academics. It combines empirical analysis of microeconomic shipping and port data with three case studies of choice of port (focusing on Spain, Egypt, and Morocco) and five case studies on hinterland development (Barcelona; Malta; Marseilles; Port Said East, Egypt; and Tanger Med, Morocco).

Book Dry Ports and the Extended Gateway Concept

Download or read book Dry Ports and the Extended Gateway Concept written by Fedele Iannone and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hinterland distribution of maritime containers from and to seaports has received a great deal of attention lately. Increasing traffic volumes and the introduction of bigger vessels put pressure on marine container terminals and inland transport infrastructure, leading to congestion. Solutions are therefore needed, and the development of dry ports according to the extended gateway concept is a relevant option to reduce congestion and improve the accessibility and connectivity in port-hinterland container networks, thus enhancing the competitiveness of seaports and more generally the cost and service efficiency of production-distribution and logistic supply chains. This paper contains an introduction to key issues in the field of port-hinterland container logistics, with a focus on dry ports, the extended gateway concept, and the demand side of inland container services. The selection of services or service providers, or the routing of containers on multimodal networks is considered as an integral part of managing global production-distribution supply chains. The main considerations underlying the design of port-hinterland container networks under the perspectives of shippers are therefore discussed and a critical review of major optimization models developed by academics is presented. Through the assessment of the current state of research, important issues, challenges and requirements for more comprehensive network design modeling are identified. Shippers evaluate the advantages and drawbacks of alternative hinterland container logistics solutions against their supply chain objectives involving various trade-offs. There is a need for new tools of analysis that incorporate more realistic features, such as regulatory environment, uncertain information, risk modeling, logistic integration, and environmental and social impacts of container distribution operations. In any case, the optimal port-hinterland network configuration from the shippers' viewpoint is case-specific, depending on factors such as the type of goods, the level of the inventory holding costs, the service levels and pricing structures at marine and inland terminals, the customs procedures and inspection rules, the capacity constraints and the lead times for different operations, and so on.

Book Competitiveness of South Asia s Container Ports

Download or read book Competitiveness of South Asia s Container Ports written by Matías Herrera Dappe and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Asia’s trade almost doubled in the past decade, but the share of trade in GDP is still smaller (47 percent) than in East Asia (55 percent), and South Asia’s economic competitiveness continues to lag that of other regions. Part of the problem is the region’s container ports. As a result of inefficiencies, the average cost of exporting or importing a container in the region is more than twice what it is in East Asia. Better port logistics could help increase trade, diversify exports, attract more foreign direct investment, and spur economic growth. As container traffic continues to grow and physical expansion is constrained by the limited supply of available land at most ports, the best way to improve port performance is by increasing productivity. To identify strategies for doing so, this report examines the performance of the 14 largest container ports in the region based on two sets of criteria: operational performance and economic performance. To measure operational performance, the report benchmarks total time at port, waiting time at port, and idle time as a share of total time at berth. To measure economic performance, it benchmarks productivity and efficiency using two useful techniques: Malmquist total factor productivity decomposition and data envelopment analysis. The report identifies key drivers of port performance and examines how differences in performance across ports are related to those drivers. This analysis is based on an original dataset on private sector participation, governance, and competition in South Asia’s container port sector. To highlight the potential gains from improving performance of container ports, the report uses econometric techniques to isolate the impact of efficiency improvements on maritime transport costs and trade. The results suggest that the best strategy for improving port performance in the region is a three-pronged approach that (a) encourages private sector participation through a well-developed enabling environment, including further adoption of the “landlord†? port model; (b) strengthens the governance of port authorities’ boards; and (c) promotes competition between and within ports, in part through transparent and competitive concession bidding.

Book Game Theoretical Offshore Container Port Competition

Download or read book Game Theoretical Offshore Container Port Competition written by İsmail Kurt and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Container ports are indispensable parts of the container transport operations. In terms of container transport operations even better port services are desired to provide viability of reliable liner shipping service. Therefore, port competition to supply better port services is one of the natural consequences of the container transport evolution in the globalisation era. This thesis offers a port competition analysis as total transportation time and cost based between the container ports which serve to collided hinterlands with the integration of offshore container port system (OCPS) and ultra large container vessels (ULCV). An OCPS adaptation is assumed to create offshore container port related an inter-port container competition with other conventional container ports which can handle ULCVs. This OCPS is going to complicate competition game and conditions even much more between ports. The methodological approach of this study aims to develop a hybrid port competition analysis model to analyse port competition in terms of commercial and operational aspects. The model is divided to two different methodological stages. First proposed method is to apply total transportation time and cost based door-to-door container network analysis in order to determine the competitiveness of the given port alternatives. In this approach, according to total time and cost values, the weights of each competitive port are determined to define the position of ports in the competition in order to attract interest of the industrial customers. Operating costs, voyage costs, cargo handling costs and hinterland transportation cost, and also port construction costs are considered as main criteria to clarify the ports' position in the competition. Second method is to develop a game theoretical strategy concept to apply on the port competition regarding to lucrativeness and investment opportunity expectations of the port authorities. Integration and comparison of the both methodological approaches is going to provide valuable findings to analyse competitiveness level of container ports more accurately. Outcomes of this research may help for future business development strategies of port authorities, port operators, shipping liners and private and public port investors. This study is expected to provide a clear holistic comprehending about the underlying dynamics of the port competition for all counterparties involved in container transport operations.

Book Port Systems in Global Competition

Download or read book Port Systems in Global Competition written by César Ducruet and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world where most international trade is carried by sea, each port can be seen as a unique chokepoint competing to attract ever more traffic and economic activities. However, ports can also be seen as parts of a wider system, which can be defined as a system of two or more ports located in proximity within a given area. Their fate and governance is jointly influenced when belonging to the same region, country, or transnational space. Investments, shocks, innovations, and delays occurring in one port often affect other ports within a certain spatial range and time lapse. Further understanding of such co-developments in port systems is necessary to go beyond local specificities, through a multidisciplinary and multi-level contribution. Port Systems in Global Competition is an answer to the strong and urgent need for reviewing the relevant theories, concepts, methods, and sources that can be mobilized for the analysis of port systems. With contributions from reputable scholars coming from no less than 11 countries in Europe, Asia, and North America, this book delves into the analysis of port systems from diverse disciplinary angles (geography, regional science, economics, management, engineering, and mathematics/computer sciences), and covering innovative empirical approaches to various port systems in the world. The theoretical and empirical knowledge can support and enhance decision-making in relation with the development of ports, supply chains, and transport networks in general. This book is an ideal companion to academics and upper-level students interested in the analysis of transport and economic systems in general, as well as the effective ways to answer complex issues in transportation and socio-economic development. It will be a valuable resource for those researching or studying transportation and supply chains, maritime and port economics, as well as regional development and human geography.

Book Essays on Strategy Analysis for Seaports

Download or read book Essays on Strategy Analysis for Seaports written by Elvira Haezendonck and published by Garant. This book was released on 2001 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasingly competitive market environment, in which port clusters operate today, imposes new requirements on port strategy analysis. Many port authorities and port operators now realize that a static approach to cost leadership, a sole focus on inherited factor advantages and a simplistic reliance on new infrastructure to attract or retain clients, are no longer sufficient to guarantee a port's competitive success. They need to offer greater value added to port users, as well as to society. Hence, this new market environment forces ports to reconsider their present strategic position and to reflect on the strategic options for the future. The book builds upon an in-depth survey of economic actors in the Antwerp seaport cluster, with a specific focus on the container and conventional cargo clusters. It attempts to answer the question why these particular port clusters arc more competitive than similar clusters in other ports. In order to answer this question, the study develops and extends a number of formal tools of strategy analysis that should be useful to both port authorities and port operators.

Book Demand and Supply Interactions in Transport Models

Download or read book Demand and Supply Interactions in Transport Models written by David G. Carrillo Murillo and published by Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft Mbh & Company. This book was released on 2011 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea-port throughput breaks records every year, bringing hard competition into their markets. The hinterland is the market area of a sea-port, and the 'battle-of-ports' is accomplished inland. In this book, an explanation of agents, transport modes, and decision-making reveals the functioning of this area and highlights the main elements for container flows. Then, an approach for modeling dynamic behavior of agents is treated explicitly. This model (Free Economic Energy) focuses on dynamic strategies of logistics-suppliers and firms trying to get the best services possible in an elegant form for obtaining the long-term equilibrium between the distribution of clients (flows) and the efficient location of sustainable suppliers supported by the local market (efficiency). In this dissertation, the model is extended and two empirical-studies demonstrate the potential of the model for giving advice to port authorities, entrepreneurs, and policy-makers. Dissertation.
