Book Development of a Constant K Specimen for Materials Testing

Download or read book Development of a Constant K Specimen for Materials Testing written by P. Huculak and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study is presented of a constant stress intensity factor specimen comprising four circular cutouts. The results of fatigue crack growth tests, compliance measurements, and a finite element formulation show that minor modifications to a center cracked tension specimen lead to constancy in the stress intensity factor as a function of crack length. The basic geometry can also be repeated in a stacked configuration in order to test multiple cracks in a single setup.

Download or read book Time Dependent Fracture written by A.S. Krausz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The understanding of time dependent crack propagation processes occupies a central place in the study of fracture. It also encompasses a wide range of conditions: failure under sustained loading in a corrosive environment, fracture under cyclic loading in non-degrading and in corrosive environment, and rupture at high temperature. This list covers probably 90% of the failures that occur in engineering practice. The process of time dependent fracture is controlled by the physics of atomic interaction changes; it is strongly influenced by the micro structure; and affected by the interaction of the material with the mechanical (load, displacement), the thermal (temperature), and the chemical or radiation environment. To be able to control crack propagation the development of testing methods and the understanding of the industrial environment is essential. The conference was organized in this context. A call was issued for contributions to the following topics. THERMAL ACTIVATION. Theoretical papers dealing with the modification of fracture mechanics to accommodate thermally activated processes. TIME DEPENDENT MICRO-PROCESSES. Presentations covering both the theoretical and observational aspects of creep and fatigue damage in materials whose microstructures may exert a significant influence on crack growth. INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS. Submissions describing the practical application of fracture mechanics and damage tolerance analysis to the determination of useful operating lives. x ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS. Papers dealing with engineering materials and/or components exposed to aggressive environments, with and without temperature effects. The response was gratifying. Leading experts responded; the organizers of the conference are grateful for the large number of excellent contributions.

Book Development of a Crack Growth Rate Test for Quality Control

Download or read book Development of a Crack Growth Rate Test for Quality Control written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A test method has been developed which reliably and inexpensively provides the fatigue crack growth rate of a material sample at any given stress intensity level. The method employs a notched three point bend bar, typically 4 i/4 in. x 1/2 in. x 1/4 in., in a controlled displacement amplitude test mode. The specimen/test system is configured such that a constant stress intensity amplitude exists over the central region of the test specimen. Due to the unique attributes of a displacement controlled constant K test specimen, no visual or COD measurements of crack length are required for the crack growth rate measurement. An autographic record of load amplitude versus cycles exhibits a straight line portion, the slope of which provides a measurement of the central region crack growth rate. The test is simple enough so that a well trained quality control laboratory technician can perform it employing about one hour of his time to set it up, run the test and analyze the result. Capability has been demonstrated by comparing the results of 137 tests using the newly developed method with crack growth rate data generated employing compact tension geometry samples.
