Book General Circulation Model Development

Download or read book General Circulation Model Development written by David A. Randall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-07-19 with total page 849 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Circulation Models (GCMs) are rapidly assuming widespread use as powerful tools for predicting global events on time scales of months to decades, such as the onset of EL Nino, monsoons, soil moisture saturation indices, global warming estimates, and even snowfall predictions. While GCMs have been praised for helping to foretell the current El Nino and its impact on droughts in Indonesia, its full power is only now being recognized by international scientists and governments who seek to link GCMs to help them estimate fish harvests, risk of floods, landslides, and even forest fires. Scientists in oceanography, hydrology, meteorology, and climatology and civil, ocean, and geological engineers perceive a need for a reference on GCM design. In this compilation of information by an internationally recognized group of experts, Professor Randall brings together the knowledge base of the forerunners in theoretical and applied frontiers of GCM development. General Circulation Model Development focuses on the past, present, and future design of numerical methods for general circulation modeling, as well as the physical parameterizations required for their proper implementation. Additional chapters on climate simulation and other applications provide illustrative examples of state-of-the-art GCM design. Key Features * Foreword by Norman Phillips * Authoritative overviews of current issues and ideas on global circulation modeling by leading experts * Retrospective and forward-looking chapters by Akio Arakawa of UCLA * Historical perspectives on the early years of general circulation modeling * Indispensable reference for researchers and graduate students

Book General Circulation Models of the Atmosphere

Download or read book General Circulation Models of the Atmosphere written by Julius Chang and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods in Computational Physics, Volume 17: General Circulation Models of the Atmosphere is a five-chapter text that covers the fundamentals and application of general circulation models to solving practical problems related to the atmosphere. The first chapter describes the various options in modeling physical processes and computational procedures. The next two chapters illustrate the influence of practical considerations to the compromise between a detailed physical description and reasonable computing time. Other chapters outline the computational details of two different numerical schemes for general circulation models. These chapters particularly provide an in-depth analysis of finite difference methods by proceeding from general considerations of homogeneous incompressible flow to the fine details of the particular numerical scheme. The final chapter discusses the fundamentals of the alternative spectral method for a multilevel spectral model that illustrates the capability of that approach. This book is of value to geoscientists, mathematicians, and physicists.

Book Odyssey in Climate Modeling Global Warming and Advising Five Presidents

Download or read book Odyssey in Climate Modeling Global Warming and Advising Five Presidents written by Warren Washington and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-05 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warren M. Washington, Senior Scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, was among the first scientists to pioneer the development of climate models that are used for evaluation of humankind's impact on the global environment. His modeling work has helped understand climate change including global warming. Over the last 30 years, he has had Presidential Appointments under the Carter, Reagan, Clinton, and G.W. Bush administrations and he has served on many science committees and the including National Science Board, which he chaired from 2002 to 2006. He is a former President of the American Meteorological Society and a member of both the National Academy of Engineering and the American Philosophical Society. This autobiography provides information about how he became a scientist and his insights into science policy. Throughout the book, footnotes and internet web sites are used were more information is provided.

Book Integrated Systems of Meso Meteorological and Chemical Transport Models

Download or read book Integrated Systems of Meso Meteorological and Chemical Transport Models written by Alexander Baklanov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-03 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, as the outcome of the COST-728/NetFAM workshop, focuses on the following main topics: 1) on-line coupled meteorology-chemistry modelling with two-way feedbacks, 2) off-line coupled modelling and interfaces, 3) validation and case studies including air quality related episodes, and 4) integration of atmospheric chemical transport (ACT) models with numerical weather prediction (NWP). This book is one of the first attempts to give an overall look on such integrated meso-meteorology and chemistry modelling approach. It reviews the current situation with the on-line and off-line coupling of mesoscale meteorological and ACT models worldwide as well as discusses advantages and shortcomings, best practices, and gives recommendations for on-line and off-line coupling of NWP and ACT models, implementation strategy for different feedback mechanisms, direct and indirect effects of aerosols and advanced interfaces between both types of models. The book is oriented towards numerical weather prediction and air quality modelling communities.

Book Actual Crop Water Use in Project Countries

Download or read book Actual Crop Water Use in Project Countries written by Robina Wahaj and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report aims to synthesize the results of a crop water use study conducted by country teams of the GEF/World Bank project, Regional Climate, Water, and Agriculture: Impacts on and Adaptation of Agro-ecological Systems in Africa. It also presents the results of the second phase of the study based on climate change scenarios, conducted by the South Africa country team. The actual evapotranspiration of five commonly grown crops-maize, millet, sorghum, groundnuts, and beans-in two selected districts were analyzed by six country teams. In addition, two country teams also analyzed other crops grown in the districts. The regional analysis shows that the actual yield of the different crops-specifically of maize and groundnuts-improves with an increase in actual evapotranspiration, although the gap remains wide between actual and potential yield and actual and maximum evapotranspiration, especially for the rainfed crops. This highlights the importance of improved water management if agriculture is to play an important role as a source of food security and better livelihoods. The report highlights the vulnerability of maize to water stress and the increased risks to the viability of rainfed farming systems based on this crop. The results of the second phase of analysis show that a 2°C increase in the temperature and a doubling of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere will shorten the growing period of maize, which will result in decreased crop water requirement and use. The authors recommend extending this type of analysis to other crops as well as to other countries to develop a clearer picture of the changing pattern in crop water use of the major crops grown in the project countries.
