Book The Geography of Georgia

Download or read book The Geography of Georgia written by Igor V. Bondyrev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the political and economic history and geography of Georgia, the problems it has faced, and how it has overcome and is still overcoming them. In most countries, at the end of the 20th century the successful resolution of social-economic, political, demographic and ecological problems was largely dependent on effectively protecting the population and economic assets from natural disasters and on ensuring conditions for their sustainable development. These problems are most acute in mountainous regions like Georgia, where the unplanned development of natural ecosystems has had drastic consequences. It is therefore necessary to understand not only the probability of changing conditions (natural as well as political and demographic), but also the probability of the resulting economic losses. The book is divided into four sections; historical and political geography, geological processes, ecological processes and developmental geography. In the historical and political geography section the authors present a detailed discussion on ancient history, historical and political geography, ethnic groups and religions, demographics and socio-cultural geography. The geological processes section contains information on geology, geodynamical processes, glacial and periglacial processes. The ecological processes section examines a variety of landscapes and ecosystems, aspects of deforestation, reforestation and desertification along with anthropogenic impacts on the environment. The developmental geography section looks at different economies, natural resources, sustainable development and climate change.

Book excerpt: Georgia has made remarkable progress in terms of economic growth and poverty alleviation. In 2019, the country became an upper middle-income country Georgia's endowment of natural resources is a significant source of national wealth and has the potential for accelerating inclusive socio-economic development. Yet, challenges persist as poverty and inequality remain high, especially in rural areas. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) induced global recession has affected important sectors of the economy, including tourism and the travel industry. This report fills knowledge gaps in the upstream importance of environment and natural assets, and highlights areas for aligning national strategies with sustainable recovery from the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In so doing, the report aims to inform national policies by which Georgia has commitments to “greening” sector developments aligned with the provisions of the EU-Georgia Association Agreement. The analysis underlying the report includes updates to the cost of environmental degradation (CoED) published in 2015. It also reflects the new government priorities and options for addressing specific challenges in forest management, land and coastal degradation, and air pollution. The recommendations of this report are designed for a wider audience, including the government of Georgia, as well as development partners and broader society.

Book Russia blocking economic development of Georgia

Download or read book Russia blocking economic development of Georgia written by Nino Khachiashvili and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,3, Karlshochschule International University, language: English, abstract: Over centuries, Georgia, as a geopolitical interest for Russia, has been going through the conflicts, wars, and embargos, which have had a huge effect and impact on economic developments of the country. The purpose of this seminar paper is to present and analyse reliable sources and data, which clearly support and as well challenge the argument stated and think about solutions for the international economic relations between two countries. I consider as well very crucial, to see it from different perspectives, to critically identify and measure the facts and the rules which were disobeyed, free trade which has been “governed” by state governments and violated – forgetting the wills and about the well-being of the inhabitants, therefore acting against the initial role of state government, forgetting the responsibilities towards the people living there. Main purpose of this topic is to deeply understand economic difficulties Georgia has been coming across for a long period of time, and what a big role Russia has played in it. I will be discussing and showing the arguments how much the “21st century’s economic relations rules” are disobeyed and disrespected. I will be talking about International Rankings of Georgia, how much the country has advanced since years, showing it in comparison with Russia and other European countries. Wine plays one of the most important roles in the economy of Georgia in case of exports and trading, by banning Georgian wine in Russia, Georgian economy faced a lot of difficulties. Even though, Russia was the number one in exporting Georgian Wine, and Georgia was importing a lot of products from Russia, businesses resumed several times, completely against the free trade and purely for political reasons. Why does it happen so? What is the idea behind it? The most important issues will be briefly but thoroughly discussed in my seminar paper, assuming the reasons and solutions. The topic of corruption in Georgia and Russia, comparing the two and how much Georgia achieved even considering the obstacles it has been facing. Russia forcing Georgia to join Eurasian Union – possible threats, how much illogical it is for Georgia to join, and what kind of development it can have in case of becoming a member of European Union in comparison with Eurasian Union. One of the most obvious facts will be discussed how much Russia has changed Georgian economic development and possible future threats Georgia is already facing.
