Book excerpt: The development of weather and climate prediction models is steadily progressing toward a unified state where multi-scale processes will be fully resolved on dense uniform, variable, or adaptive meshes. However, we are currently in a transition period where advances in computation, numerical methods, and scientific understanding of detailed atmospheric dynamics are converging and much work remains in all these areas to establish a new generation of operational weather and climate forecasting. This thesis aims to put forth a process for advancing numerical modeling of the atmosphere from formulation to implementation, design of numerical tests, and validation by exploring the detailed dynamics of orographically forced gravity wave breaking. We present a novel, efficient, and high-performance dynamical core, Tempest, and use it to create high resolution non-hydrostatic simulations of wave breaking with the purpose of investigating and informing on the behavior of a gravity wave drag parameterization currently in operational use. We demonstrate the superior properties of the numerical scheme using a variety of tests spanning a wide range of length scales. We further present an extension of the classical linear theory of mountain waves and use this solution in the design of fully nonlinear wave breaking simulations leading to a detailed characterization of gravity wave drag as it is implemented in general circulation models.

Book excerpt: Traditionally, numerical models for simulating planetary scale weather and climate employ the hydrostatic primitive equations-an abbreviated form of Navier-Stokes equations that neglect vertical accelerations and use simplified inertial forces. 1 Although there is no evidence so far that including nonhydrostatic effects in global models has any physical significance for large scale solutions, there is an apparent trend in the community toward restoring Navier-Stokes equations (or at least their less constrained forms) in global models of atmospheres and oceans. The primary motivation for this is that the state-of-the-art computers already admit resolutions where local nonhydrostatic effects become noticeable. Other advantages include: the convenience of local mesh refinement; better overall accuracy; insubstantial computational overhead relative to hydrostatic models; universality and therefore convenience of maintaining a single large code; as well as conceptual simplicity and mathematical elegancy--features important for education. The few existing nonhydrostatic global models differ in analytic formulation and numerical design, reflecting their different purposes and origins. Much of our present research improves the design of a high-performance numerical model for simulating the flows of moist (and precipitating), rotating, stratified fluids past a specified time-dependent irregular lower boundary. This model is representative of a class of nonhydrostatic atmospheric codes employing the an elastic equations of motion in a terrain-following curvilinear framework, and contains parallel implementations of semi-Lagrangian and Eulerian approximations selectable by the user. The model has been employed in a variety of applications; the quality of results suggest that modern nonoscillatory forward-in-time (NFT) methods are superior to the more traditional centered-in-time-and-space schemes, in terms of accuracy, computational efficiency, flexibility and robustness.

Many of the problems dealt with herein have, since the school year 1975-76, been the subject of a series of graduate lectures at the "Universire des Sciences et Techniques de Lille I" for students preparing for the "Diplome d'Etudes Ap profondies de Mecanique (option fluides)". The writing of this book was thus strongly influenced by the author's own conception of meteorology as a fluid mechanics discipline which is in a privi leged area for the application of singular perturbation techniques. It goes without saying that the modeling of atmospheric flows is a vast and complex problem which is presently the focal point of many research projects. The enonnity of the topic explains why many important questions have not been taken up in this work, even among those which are closely related to the subject treated herein. Nonetheless, the author thought it worthwhile for the development of future research on the modeling of atmospheric flows (from the viewpoint of theoretical fluid mechanics) to bring forth a book specifying the problems which have already been resolved in this field and those which are, as yet, unsolved.

In North America the damage due to these winds is more than 65% of total wind damage, and there are no guidelines or code implementations to deal with such catastrophic events. As we enter the third decade of the twenty-first century, current research is in its first phase of addressing these types of events, from their characterization, simulation, and loading, to collapse-mode effects on buildings and structures, as well as socioeconomic implications. The need is clear to better understand non-synoptic local winds; properly simulate them; assess the difference in loading between these events and synoptic large-scale winds that have been part of the wind engineering practice for more than five decades; determine their statistics and associated risks; and apply this through guidelines, codes, risk mitigation, and adaptation responses to socioeconomic impact.
