Book Development and Testing of a New Reefing System to Reduce Parachute Opening Shock Characteristics During Seat Ejection

Download or read book Development and Testing of a New Reefing System to Reduce Parachute Opening Shock Characteristics During Seat Ejection written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the initial testing of a new parachute slider reefing system to control the opening dynamics of the military C-9 parachute. It has been theorized that if one could control the opening of the parachute canopy used during emergency ejections, the parachute opening forces on the crewmember could he significantly reduced. The report addressed the reefing system modification and summarizes the initial testing results of the new slider reefing system to control the parachute opening dynamics.

Book Wake Properties Behind an Ejection Seat Escape System and Aerodynamic Characteristics with Stabilization Parachutes at Mach Numbers from 0 6 to 1 5

Download or read book Wake Properties Behind an Ejection Seat Escape System and Aerodynamic Characteristics with Stabilization Parachutes at Mach Numbers from 0 6 to 1 5 written by David E. A. Reichenau and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A test was conducted in the Propulsion Wind Tunnel (16T) of the Propulsion Wind Tunnel Facility to determine the flow field in the wake of an ejection seat escape system at transonic flight conditions, and to determine the performance characteristics of a stabilization parachute attached to the back of the ejection seat model. The results were obtained for both simulated rocket-off and rocket-on conditions through a model angle-of-attack range from 0 to 30 deg. High pressure air was used to simulate the escape rocket jet plume at a sea-level altitude. The results show that the ejection seat model was statically unstable, but became longitudinally stable with the parachute for the test range investigated. (Author).

Book Aerodynamic Characteristics of an Ejection Seat Escape System with a Stabilization Parachute at Mach Numbers from 0 3 Through 1 2

Download or read book Aerodynamic Characteristics of an Ejection Seat Escape System with a Stabilization Parachute at Mach Numbers from 0 3 Through 1 2 written by David E. A. Reichenau and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A test was conducted in the 16-ft Transonic Wind Tunnel of the Propulsion Wind Tunnel Facility to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a 0.5-scale ejection seat escape system and to determine the stability effects of a stabilization parachute attached to the back of the ejection seat model. The results were obtained for both simulated rocket-off and rocket-on conditions through a model angle-of-attack range from 0 to 30 deg and an angle-of-yaw range from 0 to 15 deg. High-pressure air was used to simulate the escape rocket jet plume at a sea-level altitude. Over the test range of this investigation, the results show that the ejection seat model was statically unstable but became longitudinally and directionally stable with the parachute using the three- and four-point bridle assemblies. Jet simulation and model yaw angle had little effect on the ejection seat longitudinal stability; however, jet simulation increased the parachute drag coefficient. (Author).

Download or read book Performance of and Design Criteria for Deployable Aerodynamic Decelerators written by George Chernowitz and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present state-of-the-art, technology, and theory applicable to deployable aerodynamic decelerators, especially textile parachute canopies, are presented. Major types of decelerators are described, and their aerodynamic and operational characteristics, as well as applications, are discussed. Detailed coverage is given to decelerator materials, design and construction, hardware, test methods and vehicles, and test instrumentation. Decelerator design procedures and performance prediction techniques are demonstrated by sample calculations.

Couch and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted at Mach 1.80 in the Langley 4-foot supersonic pressure tunnel to determine the effects of variation in reefing ratio and geometric porosity on the drag and stability characteristics of four basic canopy types deployed in the wake of a cone-cylinder forebody. The basic designs included cross, hemisflo, disk-gap-band, and extended-skirt canopies; however, modular cross and standard flat canopies and a ballute were also investigated. An empirical correlation was determined which provides a fair estimation of the drag coefficients in transonic and supersonic flow for parachutes of specific geometric porosity and reefing ratio.

Book Advanced Ejection Seat for High Dynamic Pressure Escape Wind Tunnel Test Report

Download or read book Advanced Ejection Seat for High Dynamic Pressure Escape Wind Tunnel Test Report written by J. O. Bull and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind tunnel tests were conducted to evaluate new high dynamic pressure protective devices incorporated into a conventional ejection seat. These tests are part of a development program 'Advanced Ejection Seat for High Dynamic Pressure Escape'. The objectives of this program are to develop an ejection seat design which will provide safe escape during emergency conditions encountered throughout the performance envelope of an aircraft with speed capability to 687 KEAS. Preliminary phases of this program have resulted in selection and definition of a windblast-shield, an aft body drag reduction boom, a horizontal stabilizer and a flow diverter. These devices were incorporated into a one-half scale ejection seat/crewmember model and were tested in the AEDC PWT 16-T transonic tunnel. Aerodynamic data derived from these tests are being used in six-degree-of-freedom computer simulations for performance assessments of the ejection seat configurations. (Author)

Book Parachute Recovery Systems

Download or read book Parachute Recovery Systems written by Theo W. Knacke and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide recovery system engineers in government and industry with tools to evaluate, analyze, select, and design parachute recovery systems. These systems range from simple, one-parachute assemblies to multiple-parachute systems, and may include equipment for impact attenuation, flotation, location, retrieval, and disposition. All system aspects are discussed, including the need for parachute recovery, the selection of the most suitable recovery system concept, concept analysis, parachute performance, force and stress analysis, material selection, parachute assembly and component design, and manufacturing. Experienced recovery system engineers will find this publication useful as a technical reference book; recent college graduates will find it useful as a textbook for learning about parachutes and parachute recovery systems; and technicians with extensive practical experience will find it useful as an engineering textbook that includes a chapter on parachute- related aerodynamics. In this manual, emphasis is placed on aiding government employees in evaluating and supervising the design and application of parachute systems. The parachute recovery system uses aerodynamic drag to decelerate people and equipment moving in air from a higher velocity to a lower velocity and to a safe landing. This lower velocity is known as rate of descent, landing velocity, or impact velocity, and is determined by the following requirements: (1) landing personnel uninjured and ready for action, (2) landing equipment and air vehicles undamaged and ready for use or refurbishment, and (3) impacting ordnance at a preselected angle and velocity.
