Book Development of a Plastic Rotating Band for High Performance Projectiles

Download or read book Development of a Plastic Rotating Band for High Performance Projectiles written by W. S. Larson and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This includes the investigation of plastic rotating bands fabricated directly to steel projectiles by laminating, casting, fluid bed coating, injection and compression molding. The successful method was to injection mold nylon 12 over a clean and primed projectile seat and then to heat the primed interface to a melt temperature by induction heating the projectile.

Book Preliminary Evaluation 20MM Plastic Rotating Bands

Download or read book Preliminary Evaluation 20MM Plastic Rotating Bands written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental exploratory evaluations of plastic bands applied to ammunition for the M139 gun consisted of obtaining and evaluating data provided by comparison firings between projectiles having either plastic or copper bands in two ballistic environments, the M139 and M61 gun barrels (Mann) over the temperature range -65 deg F, +70 deg F, and +160 deg F. In all, 120 projectiles were fired, 60 in each environment and 10 of each band material at each conditioning temperature. In addition, photographic observation of representative in-flight projectile firings provided visible evidence of band integrity, projectile stability, and band deformation.

Book Friction of Rotating Band Material During Engraving and Initial Projectile Travel

Download or read book Friction of Rotating Band Material During Engraving and Initial Projectile Travel written by R. S. Montgomery and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sliding characteristics and coefficients of friction of rotating band and potential rotating band material on steel were studied in the laboratory at velocities corresponding with projectile velocities near the origin-of-rifling. The band materials investigated were gilding metal, 7075 aluminum alloy, AZ61A magnesium alloy, sintered iron, soft iron, nylon 6-6, and vulcanized fiber. It is possible to draw a number of conclusions and make a number of conjectures about the engraving and initial travel of cannon projectiles from the results of this study. A comparison of the different sliding characteristics and laboratory friction coefficients provides insight into the behavior of projectiles and will help to allow the design of rotating bands without the expensive extensive firing of an actual cannon. Book Rotating Band Study Test of 3 in 70 AA Projectiles with Armco Iron Rotating Bands

Download or read book Rotating Band Study Test of 3 in 70 AA Projectiles with Armco Iron Rotating Bands written by and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 3-in./70 projectiles of various types, fitted with gilding metal rotating bands, have been observed to exhibit serious band wear; that is, partial or complete obliteration of the engraving of the bands recovered after firing. It was desired to investigate the effect of replacing the gilding metal with soft iron, in order to determine the results of using a material with a considerably increased melting point, and if this change would produce a band which did not fail, to determine the effect upon gun performance.

Book Analysis of Engraving and Wear in a Projectile Rotating Band

Download or read book Analysis of Engraving and Wear in a Projectile Rotating Band written by Peter Chen and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large deformation analysis of the engraving process and wear in a projectile rotating band is considered by using the finite element program ABAQUS. The tube and the projectile are assumed to be rigid. and the bore of the tube is assumed to be smooth and axisymmetric. An elastic-plastic material model is chosen for the copper band, which remains attached to the projectile, and an appropriate coefficient of sliding friction is chosen. The magnitude and distribution of the contact pressure between the band and the tube are obtained during engraving. The band pressure is large with severe plastic deformation occurring in the band.

Book Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods

Download or read book Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods written by United Nations and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Manual of Tests and Criteria contains criteria, test methods and procedures to be used for classification of dangerous goods according to the provisions of Parts 2 and 3 of the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Model Regulations, as well as of chemicals presenting physical hazards according to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). As a consequence, it supplements also national or international regulations which are derived from the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods or the GHS. At its ninth session (7 December 2018), the Committee adopted a set of amendments to the sixth revised edition of the Manual as amended by Amendment 1. This seventh revised edition takes account of these amendments. In addition, noting that the work to facilitate the use of the Manual in the context of the GHS had been completed, the Committee considered that the reference to the "Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods" in the title of the Manual was no longer appropriate, and decided that from now on, the Manual should be entitled "Manual of Tests and Criteria".

Book Alternatives for the Demilitarization of Conventional Munitions

Download or read book Alternatives for the Demilitarization of Conventional Munitions written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military has a stockpile of approximately 400,000 tons of excess, obsolete, or unserviceable munitions. About 60,000 tons are added to the stockpile each year. Munitions include projectiles, bombs, rockets, landmines, and missiles. Open burning/open detonation (OB/OD) of these munitions has been a common disposal practice for decades, although it has decreased significantly since 2011. OB/OD is relatively quick, procedurally straightforward, and inexpensive. However, the downside of OB and OD is that they release contaminants from the operation directly into the environment. Over time, a number of technology alternatives to OB/OD have become available and more are in research and development. Alternative technologies generally involve some type of contained destruction of the energetic materials, including contained burning or contained detonation as well as contained methods that forego combustion or detonation. Alternatives for the Demilitarization of Conventional Munitions reviews the current conventional munitions demilitarization stockpile and analyzes existing and emerging disposal, treatment, and reuse technologies. This report identifies and evaluates any barriers to full-scale deployment of alternatives to OB/OD or non-closed loop incineration/combustion, and provides recommendations to overcome such barriers.
