Book High resolution Spectroscopy of Rydberg Atoms andMolecules

Download or read book High resolution Spectroscopy of Rydberg Atoms andMolecules written by Thomas Alfred Paul and published by Sudwestdeutscher Verlag Fur Hochschulschriften AG. This book was released on 2008 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability of laser radiation in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) wavelength range is important for the investigation of excited electronic states of atoms and molecules. The study of Rydberg states provides the possibility of unravelling the underlying processes of photoionization. In order to make studies of the fine and hyperfine structures in the VUV spectra of atoms and molecules feasible, high resolving powers are required. The short wavelength of VUV radiation and the difficulties that accompany its production render such studies an experimental challenge. This work summarizes the development, characterization and spectroscopic applications of a new narrow-bandwidth VUV laser system generating VUV radiation at a bandwidth of 55 MHz, five times less than that of previous tunable pulsed VUV laser systems. High-resolution measurements and analysis of the Rydberg spectra of xenon, krypton and the hydrogen molecule, revealing fine and hyperfine structures, isotope effects and details of the photoionization dynamics at an unprecedented level of precision demonstrate the versatility of this system.

The Institute was held at Elba International Physics Center, Marciana Marina, Elba Island, Tuscany, Italy, August 31 -September 11, 1992. The Europhysics School of Quantum Electronics was started in 1970 with the aim of providing instruction for young researchers and advanced students al ready engaged in the area of quantum electronics or wishing to switch to this area from a different background. Presently the school is under the direction of Professors F.T. Arecchi and M. Inguscio, University of Florence, and Prof. H. Book Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Vacuum Ultraviolet Radiation Physics

Download or read book Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Vacuum Ultraviolet Radiation Physics written by T. Miyahara and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes contain 365 of the 505 papers presented at the VUV-11 Conference, held at Rikkyo University, Tokyo, from August 27th to September 1st 1995. The papers are divided into three sections: atomic and molecular spectroscopy, solid state spectroscopy and instrumentation and technological applications. New aspects presented were both quantitative and qualitative improvements in fluorescence spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism measurements. The fluorescence data are complementary to those of photoemission in a sense but they appear to open up a new method to analyze the optical excitation and relaxation processes. The application of magnetic circular dichroism has proved to be useful not only in analyzing the electronic structures of magnetic materials but also in practical applications to material engineering as found in experiments combined with photoelectron microscopy. Excellent developments in applications are only found in the field of surface photochemistry, where the technique of etching using VUV light has been appreciably refined. Although the majority of distinctive scientific features in the VUV-11 Conference have been brought about by the application of synchrotron radiation, experiments using a different type of light source appear to have progressed steadily. This is evident in the studies of plasma radiation.

Book Laser Spectroscopy of Solids

Download or read book Laser Spectroscopy of Solids written by W. M. Yen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume we have attempted to present a concise survey of the spectroscopic properties of insulators as derived from the application of tunable laser spectro scopic techniques. As has been the case in gaseous atomic spectroscopy, the use of tunable lasers has allowed the extension and the refmement of optical measure ments in the condensed phases to unprecedented resolutions in the frequency and temporal domains. In turn, this firmer base of empirical fmdings has led to a more sophisticated theoretical understanding of the spectroscopy of optically excited states with major modifications being apparent in the area of their dynamic be havior. Yet the revivalistic nature of these advances implies that additional advan ces are to be expected as the techniques and developments outlined in this volume are put to widespread use. Regardless, it is our hope and that of our distinguished colleagues in this venture that the reviews presented here will be useful to neo phytes and veterans to this field alike - to the former as a laissez-passer into solid-state spectroscopy, to the latter as a useful synopsis and reference of recent developments. We have also attempted to expose the reader to the concept that optically active materials, be they organic or inorganic, as universality would require, be have in a like manner and, though terminology may vary in detail, the outline and general features of all insulators remain constant.
