Book The Development of Integrated Sea Use Management

Download or read book The Development of Integrated Sea Use Management written by Hance Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-26 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fisheries, recreation, transportation, mineral extraction ... the world's seas are subject to an incredibly diverse range of uses. Hitherto these have generally been considered on a use by use basis, with a multiplicity of separate organisations involved in government, private and voluntary sectors. The Development of Integrated Sea Use Management looks at the moves towards integrated management of these conflicting uses and of their environmental impacts. Three key starting points for integrated management are identified, namely, the theme of maritime boundary delimitation which governs the allocation of sea space among states; the management of individual uses, which remains a cornerstone upon which integrated management can be built; and the regional basis of integrated ocean management. The content ranges widely over detailed case studies within each sphere, in both developed and developing countries, and from coastal estuaries to the deep ocean.

Book Maritime Spatial Planning

Download or read book Maritime Spatial Planning written by Jacek Zaucha and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license Maritime or marine spatial planning has gained increasing prominence as an integrated, common-sense approach to promoting sustainable maritime development. A growing number of countries are engaged in preparing and implementing maritime spatial plans: however, questions are emerging from the growing body of MSP experience. How can maritime spatial planning deal with a complex and dynamic environment such as the sea? How can MSP be embedded in multiple levels of governance across regional and national borders – and how far does the environment benefit from this new approach? This open access book is the first comprehensive overview of maritime spatial planning. Situated at the intersection between theory and practice, the volume draws together several strands of interdisciplinary research, reflecting on the history of MSP as well as examining current practice and looking towards the future. The authors and contributors examine MSP from disciplines as diverse as geography, urban planning, political science, natural science, sociology and education; reflecting the growing critical engagement with MSP in many academic fields. This innovative and pioneering volume will be of interest and value to students and scholars of maritime spatial planning, as well as planners and practitioners. Jacek Zaucha is Professor of Economics at Gdánsk University, Poland. He is long experienced in maritime spatial planning, and is currently leading the team preparing the first plan for Polish waters. Kira Gee is Research Associate at the Centre for Materials and Coastal Research (Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht), Germany. She has been involved in MSP research and practice for over 20 years, and has participated in numerous national and transnational European MSP projects.

Book Security and Cross Border Cooperation in the EU the Black Sea Region and Southern Caucasus

Download or read book Security and Cross Border Cooperation in the EU the Black Sea Region and Southern Caucasus written by A. Ergun and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2013-02-28 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cross-border cooperation is vital to overcoming obstacles to security building and the consolidation of stability, particularly in regions prone to political upheaval and conflict. This book presents papers from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop entitled “Security and Cross-Border Cooperation in the EU, Black Sea Region and Southern Caucasus”. This workshop was part of the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme, and was held in Ankara, Turkey, in September 2011. It focused on developing a future research agenda, strengthening regional studies and increasing interdisciplinarity and the means to improve cross-border cooperation and was aimed at providing a comprehensive, interactive and interdisciplinary account of security building and cross-border cooperation in which domestic, regional and international dimensions were discussed. The book is divided into three sections. The first provides an analysis of the role of international and domestic actors in contributing to security building in the Euro-Atlantic, the Black Sea and the Southern Caucasus regions. The second section discusses the patterns of cross-border cooperation in Eastern and Central Europe and the wider Black Sea region, concentrating on Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia and the Russian Federation. With references to the nature of international involvement in conflict resolution, the last section focuses on cross-border cooperation in the Southern Caucasus, where conflicts have an enormous impact on nation-building, state-building and democratization, and where prospects for stability and a viable peace remain in serious question. This book is a valuable contribution to the literature on area studies, cross-border cooperation, security, and peace studies.

Book Territorial Governance across Europe

Download or read book Territorial Governance across Europe written by Peter Schmitt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive framework for analysing, comparing and promoting territorial governance in policy relevant research. It reveals in-depth considerations of the emergence, state-of-the art and evolution of the concept of territorial governance. A unique series of ten case studies across Europe, from neighbourhood planning in North Shields in the North East of England to climate change adaptation in the Baltic Sea Region, provides far-reaching insights into a number of key elements of territorial governance. The book draws generalised empirically-based conclusions and discusses modes of transferability of ‘good practices’. A number of suggestions are presented as to how the main findings from this book can inform theories of territorial governance and spatial policy and planning. Territorial Governance across Europe will be of considerable interest to scholars around the world who are concerned with European studies, regional policy, urban and regional planning, and human and political geography. It provides a solid debate on discourses, theories, concepts and methods around the notion of territorial governance as well as a number of empirical findings from various contexts across Europe. It specifically targets scholars involved in policy-relevant research.
