The purpose of this conference was to address the issues facing academia and industry when specifying, developing, managing, and improving infonnation systems. ISD'99 consisted not only of the technical program represented in these Proceedings, but also of plenary sessions on product support and content management systems for the Internet environment, workshop on a new paradigm for successful acquisition of infonnation systems, and a panel discussion on current pedagogical issues in systems analysis and design. The selection of papers for ISD'99 was carried out by the International Program Committee. Papers presented during the conference and printed in this volume have been selected from submissions after fonnal double-blind reviewing process and have been revised by their authors based on the recommendations of reviewers. Papers were judged according to their originality, relevance, and presentation quality. All papers were judged purely on their own merits, independently of other submissions. We would like to thank the authors of papers accepted for ISD'99 who all made gallant efforts to provide us with electronic copies of their manuscripts confonning to common guidelines. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to define a centralized database containing all necessary information related to daily management in an industrial and commercial organization that is publicly owned and equipped with civil personality and financial autonomy. The system is composed of the following subsystems: Human Resource Management, Provisioning; and Financial, Budgetary, and Accounting Management. The three subsystems should be installed in a central site and at regional sites. Each site will have its own database. The central database will be supplied with the data, which come from the other sites at the end of the day or according to need via modems. It is necessary to develop a tool for remote database queries to accomplish this work. The platform on which the application must be executed is IBM-INFORMIX running on top of the WINDOWS operating system. The database will be a relational database. The framework used in the design and modeling consists of the following: Object Oriented Analysis (OOA), which enables the development of high quality software by defining the problem structure; and the Delphi language, which provides a robust development environment. The installation of the solution will be executed according to the following scenario: Client/Server architecture with the object-oriented development tool DELPHI, the database will be installed on the central and regional servers, the application will be installed on the end users' stations, and data access will be through an open ODBC. This software presents an integrated solution that will provide centralized and accurate data, so that data can be used to derive the right decision at the best time. The monograph concentrates on four workflow-related issues within the area of Business Process Management; the field of designing and controlling business processes. The first issue is how workflows can be adequately modeled. Workflow mod- ing is an indispensable activity to support any reasoning about workflows. Diff- ent purposes of workflow modeling can be distinguished, such as system ena- ment by Workflow Management Systems, knowledge management, costing, and budgeting. The potential of the latest technologies and changes in operational and analytical applications over the last decade have given rise to the unification of these systems, which can be of benefit for both workloads. Research and industry have reacted and prototypes of hybrid database systems are now appearing. Benchmarks are the standard method for evaluating, comparing and supporting the development of new database systems. Because of the separation of OLTP and OLAP systems, existing benchmarks are only focused on one or the other. With the rise of hybrid database systems, benchmarks to assess these systems will be needed as well. Based on the examination of existing benchmarks, a new benchmark for hybrid database systems is introduced in this book. It is furthermore used to determine the effect of adding OLAP to an OLTP workload and is applied to analyze the impact of typically used optimizations in the historically separate OLTP and OLAP domains in mixed-workload scenarios.
