Book Development and Evaluation of Ion Exchange Silver Recovery Pilot Plant

Download or read book Development and Evaluation of Ion Exchange Silver Recovery Pilot Plant written by Edward R. Moss and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ion-exchange silver recovery pilot plant was designed, constructed, and operated to determine the feasibility of using ion-exchange resins to recover silver from spent photographic fixer solutions. Results indicate that ion-exchange silver recovery is technically feasible since the silver concentration in the fix tank can be maintained below 0.05 gm Ag(+)/l with complete recycle of the fixer solution, the ion-exchange resin can be regenerated, and the silver can be recovered from the regenerant solution by electrolysis. Cost evaluation of the ion-exchange silver recovery system indicates that this method is not the most economical for recovering silver from fixer solutions; electrolytic recycling appears to be more economical.

Book Development of Process for Silver Recovery from Photographic Wastes

Download or read book Development of Process for Silver Recovery from Photographic Wastes written by Henry F. Hamil and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this work was development of a silver recovery process based upon Donnan dialysis, a continuous ion exchange system in which separation of ionic species is achieved by transport across an ion exchange membrane. The role of intrinsic membrane parameters on the transport of ions in Donnan dialysis appears more complex than originally postulated. The available data indicate that there are optimal values for ion exchange capacity and membrane hydrophilicity. If ion exchange capcity or hydrophilicity are too low, no ion transport occurs. Increasing ion exchange capacity appears to increase the ion transport rates, but the attendant increase in membrane hydrophilicity leads to a loss of ion permselectivity. It thus appears that a balance in ion exchange capacity and hydrophilicity must be achieved to provide an acceptable membrane. While these conclusions should be considered tentative, it appears that this is the best explanation of the results obtained in this study based upon the available data. It is recommended that further membrane study be conducted prior to any work toward developing a prototype Donnan dialysis system for silver recovery.

Book Development and Application of Ion Exchange Silver Recovery System

Download or read book Development and Application of Ion Exchange Silver Recovery System written by Archie G. Buyers and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was conducted on the feasibility and extent of application of the ion exchange process as a method for silver recovery from spent photographic fixer solutions. The study demonstrates the technical feasibility of using ion exchange systems to recover silver from photographic fixer solutions for silver concentrations between 0.05 and 0.5 gm/l. However, ion exchange system operation at or above silver concentrations of 0.5 gm/l appears to negate any cost advantages over the electrolytic recovery systems. In addition, operation at concentrations under 0.05 gm/l requires about 10 times the resin needed at concentrations of 1.0 mg/l. A previously postulated resin-fouling mechanism was supported by experimental exchange data from a series of synthetic spent fixer solutions. Fouling during silver stripping may be caused by the formation of colloidal sulfur and silver sulfide particles with electrostatic charges neutralized by anionic exchange sites of the resin. A re-examination proved that an aqueous sodium acetate prewash of an anionic exchange column is a satisfactory method of preventing resin fouling by inorganic colloids.

Book Impurity Removal by Fixed Bed Ion Exchange from Cobalt Electrolyte Derived from the Kakanda Tailings Dump

Download or read book Impurity Removal by Fixed Bed Ion Exchange from Cobalt Electrolyte Derived from the Kakanda Tailings Dump written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A process for the recovery of copper and cobalt from the Kakanda tailings dump was developed and evaluated during an integrated pilot plant campaign at Mintek. The process involved a number of unit operations including leaching, copper solvent extraction, copper electrowinning, iron removal, manganese solvent extraction, cobalt solvent extraction, ion exchange for impurity removal, and cobalt electrowinning. This paper describes the laboratory test programme required to enable the design of an ion exchange circuit for the removal of traces of copper and zinc from the cobalt advance electrolyte, as well as the pilot plant campaign to evaluate the final design.^L^LA resin was chosen for the removal of copper, and occasionally copper and zinc, from the cobalt advance electrolyte. During the pilot plant campaign a lead-lag fixed-bed system was evaluated at a superficial linear velocity of 0.5 cm/s (to be employed on the full-scale plant). The concentration of copper in the ion exchange feed varied between 60 and 100 mg/l and that of zinc between less than 2 and 10 mg/l. Effluent concentrations for both metals of less than 2 mg/l, specified for electrowinning, were consistently delivered for both metals. ^L^LThe full- scale design was based on an ion-exchange feed flowrate of 200 m3/h, and the final dimensions of the two columns were: inside diameter 3.7 m, and height 7.5 m. Variations of copper and zinc concentrations in the ion exchange feed solution were accommodated by changes in the operating strategy of the plant during piloting.
