Book excerpt: The main purpose of this effort is to conduct research on how several regional seismic arrays can be employed together using the pooled seismic data in a simultaneous processing scheme. A site for deployment of a new array was identified in northern Norway and final approval for permission to deploy an array at this site was granted in early July 1987. This report describes the work associated with the different tasks of the site preparation and field system deployment, the arrangements for satellite transmission of data from the array site to NORSAR's data processing center at Kjeller, and the installation of an interim system for acquiring and archiving data at Kjeller. A central terminal building was constructed to house the core of the field system. Approximately 30 km of both fiber optic and power cables were trenched to connect the seismometer sites with the central building. 25 seismometer surface vaults were built, and a borehole for the broadband seismometer was prepared at the center of the array. Sources of rather minor errors in the data were traced in close cooperation with Sandia, and appropriate actions were taken to modify the field system to eliminate these errors. Computer equipment for acquisition and processing of the NORESS data has been purchased and installed. All data received at Kjeller are now subjected to online processing for detection and location of seismic events. The RONAP program package, developed at NORSAR during the last couple of years, has been adapted for use on the new data. An advanced status monitoring system has been developed. This system generates statistics on all essential aspects of operations of the new array and suitable units for display of essential parameters have been acquired and installed. (Author).

Book excerpt: The NORESS field installations were visited and several modifications and improvements were implemented. Shielding of cables, modifications to the hub processor and alteration of the power supply system has contributed to increased system reliability. These changes have led to a reduced error rate, and the data from NORESS are presently without errors. The performance of the NORESS Earth station for transmission of seismic data to the US has been very good during the reporting period. The new oscillator installed by COMSAT General in March is very stable in frequency, and there has been no need for frequency adjustments after this installation. A few outages during June were due to thunderstorms that caused power breaks in the array area.

Book excerpt: A seismic site survey in Morocco was conducted jointly with the Centre National Pour Ia Recherche Scientifique et Technique during January and Febrrary 2005. For three separate locations near Oujda (Site 1), Midelt (Site 2), and Tinerhir (Site), a portable seismic array was deployed. Seismometers were also installed in a tnnnel at an existing seismic station near Midelt (MDT) for comparison. Data from the array at each site were used to determine the characteristics of the seismic bachground noise and the capability of each site to record regional events in Morocco. The logistics and feasibilityof installing a 4-kiiometer aperture array were investigated for each potential site. The noise and event analysis indicate that the southern site south of Tinerhir is far superior to the other two proposed locations. logistically, the southern site is acoeptable for installation and support of an array. Included in the report are detailed logistical, geophysical, and geological investigations at the proposed sites, and the analysis of the seismic noise and event data collected.

Book excerpt: Short-period seismograms from local and regional events recorded at the NORESS and ARCESS arrays are being studied in order to understand the composition of local and regional phases and to separate the effects of structure and source parameters on the seismic signal. This is a precondition for accurate phase identification and accordingly, for reliable location of events within regional distances. F-K analysis is used to identify and locate arrivals in the seismograms and a composite of array beams is used as an approximation to each event. Interferences about structure differences at ARCESS and NORESS are made by comparing composite-seismogram record sections from the two sites. Synthetic P-wave seismograms are calculated for velocity models representing the average structure of the propagation paths. The effects of near-receiver and source structure on regional phases need to be understood and separated from the effects of propagation path. For this purpose receiver functions obtained from teleseismic events, recorded at the three-component, intermediate-period channels, EO at NORESS and ARCESS are being analyzed. Average Moho depth of 35 km is obtained under NORESS by stacking receiver functions from all events. The effects of a surface scatterer at Lake Mjosa are seen in one event.

Book excerpt: We have addressed the problem of optimizing the site-specific seismic threshold monitoring method in order to achieve the highest possible automatic monitoring capability of particularly interesting areas, such as the Novaya Zemlya testing area, and the Indian and Pakistani test sites. For the Novaya Zemlya test site, where a regional monitoring network is available, we obtain a monitoring capability varying between m(sub b) 2.0 and 2.5 during normal noise conditions. Based on data from the teleseismic network observing the Indian and Pakistani tests of 1998, we obtain a monitoring capability in the range m(sub b) 2.8-3.0 for these test sites. In order to fully automate the site-specific threshold monitoring method, we have developed an automatic explanation facility for analysis of the threshold traces. In this way threshold peaks caused by events located outside the target region can be discarded from further analysis. We have also extended the site-specific threshold monitoring method to process surface waves. An important results of this study is the demonstration of the significant benefits of using a shorter period band (8.12 seconds) instead of the traditional processing band (17-24 seconds) for processing surface waves at regional disturbances during an aftershock sequence.

Book excerpt: For many years, the two subjects of (1) postglacial rebound and its potential for generating earthquakes and (2) the seismicity of passive continental ml!rgins have been of interest and concern to earth scientists on both sides of the North Atlantic. New data and theoretical interpretations have given rise to vigorous discussions on how much the two phenomena inter-relate and whether a significant controlling factor on seismicity in northeastern North America and Scandinavia is the crustal uplift that has been occurring since the latest ice age. The lack of a good understanding of these phenomena presented a particular problem for engineering seismologists attempting to prepare accurate seismic hazard estimates for facili ties both on land (e. g. , nuclear power stations and radioactive waste repositories) and offshore (e. g. , petroleum production facili ties) . The NATO Advanced Research Workshop programme provided an opportuni ty to bring together a group of relevant geophysicists, geologists and geodesists from both sides of the North Atlantic, and a workshop on "Causes and Effects of Earthquakes at Passive Margins and in Areas of Postglacial Rebound on both Sides of the North Atlantic" was held in Vordingborg, Denmark, 9-13 May 1988.
