Download or read book Construction Productivity Advancement Research CPAR Program Development and Demonstration of Dredged Material Containment Systems Using Geotextiles written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Construction guidelines and techniques for the use of geotextile encapsulated soil elements to contain soil for underwater placement or for use as structural units are described. Additionally, geotextile products, techniques for construction using geotextiles, and experiences at several field sites are described. Properties and characteristics of geotextiles used for construction during the course of this investigation are discussed and described. Pertinent ASM standard tests for measuring and specifying various geotextile properties and characteristics are identified and discussed. GeoCoPS, a public domain computer code for design and analysis of long geotextile tubes, is described and used to emphasize the danger of rupturing long geotextile tubes if applied internal pressure exceeds the design value. Safety factors for long tube design are discussed in connection with GeoCoPS. Several case histories are summarized with a discussion of lessons learned from experiences surrounding construction activities, including filtration demonstrations at Nippersink Lake, near Fox Lake, IL, underwater contraction dike construction at Red Eye Crossing, near Baton Rouge, LA, and dredged material encapsulation for deep water placement at Marina del Rey, near Los Angeles, CA, and New York Harbor, at New York, NY.

Book excerpt: Geosynthetics in Civil and Environmental Engineering presents contributions from the 4th Asian Regional Conference on Geosynthetics held in Shanghai, China. The book covers a broad range of topics, such as: fundamental principles and properties of geosynthetics, testing and standards, reinforcement, soil improvement and ground improvement, filter and drainage, landfill engineering, geosystem, transport, geosynthetics-pile support system and geocell, hydraulic application, and ecological techniques. Special case studies as well as selected government-sponsored projects such as the Three Gorges Dam, Qinghai-Tibet Railway, and Changi Land reclamation project are also discussed. The book will be an invaluable reference in this field.

Book Emerging Materials for Civil Infrastructure

Download or read book Emerging Materials for Civil Infrastructure written by Roberto A. Lopez-Anido and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Emerging Materials Committee of the Materials Division of ASCE. This report presents a review of the state of the art on emerging materials for use in civil engineering infrastructure. Emerging materials include novel and new materials, as well as traditional materials with profound potential in new applications. A material or class of materials is considered "emerging" if its use has not yet progressed to a stage wherein well-established guidelines, codes, and specifications exist for its use. This report is conveniently divided into chapters that address specific classes of materials andØhighlight the most recent developments in materials technologies relevant to civil infrastructure.Ø Topics include: smart materials for civil engineering applications; fiber reinforced composites in civil infrastructure; emerging geomaterials for ground improvement; aluminum materials and the infrastructure; polymer concrete made with recycled plastics; state of the practice in asphalt technology; emerging uses for masonry materials; and emerging uses for window glass. The practicing engineer, student, or general reader will find this to be an easy-to-use reference for construction material systems that are being developed for use in civil engineering.

Book Productive Land Use of Dredged Material Containment Areas Planning and Implementation Considerations

Download or read book Productive Land Use of Dredged Material Containment Areas Planning and Implementation Considerations written by Michael R. Walsh and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report synthesizes information from Task 5D of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Dredged Material Research Program. This task examined the concept of using dredged material to create land and concurrently assessed the economic, technical, environmental, institutional, legal, and social incentives and constraints on the development of dredged material containment areas. The creation of productive land with dredged material is particularly attractive, because this option provides for the disposal of dredged material and additional benefits can be realized from the new land itself. This concept requires the planner/engineer to combine confined land disposal practices with sound land use planning for successful project implementation. Also contained are guides on the legal framework in which the Corps must work for successful land use of dredged material containment areas and on a system for economic evaluation of land created from disposal areas so that ultimate land use might be included in the final economic evaluation. Finally the report delineates and discusses seven policy and five planning issues that must be resolved at the Corps' policy and planning development level if the Corps is to assume a more active role in disposal-productive use planning for containment areas.
