Book A Roadmap to the Successful Development and Commercialization of Microbial Pest Control Products for Control of Arthropods

Download or read book A Roadmap to the Successful Development and Commercialization of Microbial Pest Control Products for Control of Arthropods written by Willem J. Ravensberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-09 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biocontrol is among the most promising methods for a safe, environmentally benign and sustainable pest control. Microbial pesticides offer a great potential, and it is anticipated that they will become a substantial part of the use of all crop protection products. Their development and commercialization, however, has been difficult and with many failures. In this book a rational and structured roadmap has been designed for the development and commercialization of microbial pest control products for the control of arthropod pests. The building blocks of the entire process are identified and essential aspects highlighted. Biopesticides based on entomopathogenic bacteria, fungi, viruses and nematodes are elaborately discussed. This systematic roadmap with a strong focus on economics and market introduction will assist academic researchers and industrial developers of biopesticides in accomplishing their goal: the development of successful cost-effective microbial pesticides.

Book The Convention on Biological Diversity and Product Commercialisation in Development Assistance Projects

Download or read book The Convention on Biological Diversity and Product Commercialisation in Development Assistance Projects written by David R. Dent and published by Biopesticides. This book was released on 2001 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The LUBILOSA (Lutte Biologique contre les Locustes et Sauteriaux) Programme was initiated in 1989 and has been successful in developing a bioinsecticide for the biological control of locusts and grasshoppers. The efficacy of the product named Green Muscle has been clearly demonstrated in Africa, and provides an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical insecticides. Although it predates the Convention on Biological Diversity, LUBILOSA has been conducted in accordance with the benefit sharing and related provisions of the Convention. This book provides a review of the program in order to demonstrate how such research and product commercialization can be accomplished in the context of a development assistance project. In particular it shows how the provisions of the Convention can be fulfilled with respect to: equitable sharing of research results and benefits, access to and transfer of technology, exchange of information, technical and scientific cooperation, participation in research and financial resources.

Book Biological Diversity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul E. Hatcher
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2011-03-23
  • ISBN : 0470979860
  • Pages : 789 pages

Download or read book Biological Diversity written by Paul E. Hatcher and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-03-23 with total page 789 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological Diversity takes a fresh, innovative approach to the teaching of biodiversity. Rather than detailing and cataloguing the major taxa and their evolutionary relationships, the authors have selected 18 groups of organisms and used these as a framework in which to discuss the species and their interactions with man and each other. There is a strong narrative theme throughout – the exploited and the exploiters - and, in many cases, there is emphasis on the historical context. A wide range of organisms are covered, from the unicellular to birds and mammals and with an equal consideration of plants and animals. Species have been chosen for their ability to best illustrate particular biological principles, and for their strong interaction with other species. After an introduction the book is divided into two parts: 'Exploited' and 'Exploiters'. Each of the chapters, although linked to each other, forms a stand-alone essay. They are scientifically rigorous, up-to-date and do not shy away from addressing some controversial issues. Chapters have 'text boxes' highlighting important issues and concepts, lists of further reading and references. In addition to tables and figures the book has a selection of original illustrations drawn by leading artist Steven Appleby. This fresh approach will appeal to all those interested in the biological sciences, and aims to be accessible to people with a diversity of backgrounds. It will prove particularly useful to biology students, enabling them to get to grips with important biological principles and concepts that underpin the diversity of life, and the interrelationship of humans with other groups of organisms.

Book The Commercial Use of Biodiversity

Download or read book The Commercial Use of Biodiversity written by Kerry Ten Kate and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-18 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1999 The Commercial Use of Biodiversity examines how biodiversity and the genetic material it contains are now as valuable resources. Access to genetic resources and their commercial development involve a wide range of parties such as conservation and research institutes, local communities, government agencies and companies. Equitable partnerships are not only crucial to conservation and economic development but are also in the interests of business and often required by law. In this authoritative and comprehensive volume, the authors explain the provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity on access and benefit-sharing, the effect of national laws to implement these, and aspects of typical contracts for the transfer of materials. They provide a unique sector-by-sector analysis of how genetic resources are used, the scientific, technological and regulatory trends and the different markets in Pharmaceuticals, Botanical Medicines, Crop Development, Horticulture, Crop Protection, Biotechnology (in fields other than healthcare and agriculture) and Personal Care and Cosmetics Products. This will be an essential sourcebook for all those in the commercial chain, from raw material collection to product discovery, development and marketing, for governments and policy-makers drafting laws on access and for all the institutions, communities and individuals involved in the conservation, use, study and commercialisation of genetic resources.
