The nature of the longitudinal relationship between these two conditions, however, is not well understood. Thus the current study examines the developmental link between depressive symptoms and antisocial behavior during early adolescence. Results indicated that both males and females showed increases in externalizing behavior, while only females exhibited increases in depressive symptoms. In addition, examination of concurrent symptom levels suggests that while levels of antisocial behavior consistently influence levels of depressive symptoms in males, these two conditions become less related over time in females. Moreover, results indicate that at no point do symptoms of either condition appear to be driving subsequent symptoms of the other condition. Further gender differences were also found in the response to a family-focused intervention, with only males showing improvement in depressive symptoms. Theoretical and clinical implications of these findings are discussed.

Book excerpt: The objective of this dissertation is to explore the nature of behavior problems at crucial stages of development. Following a brief overview of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID), including the expression of co-occurring behaviors in these populations, two related studies are presented. Both studies utilized the instruments of the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessments (ASEBA; Achenbach & Rescorla, 2000; 2001) to describe behavior problems, as observed during early childhood to adolescence. Study 1 utilized a sample of young children, ages 5 years and under, deemed at risk of a developmental disorder who were referred to a university-based screening clinic to be assessed for possible ASD. The objective of Study 1 was to empirically identify homogenous classes of emotional and behavioral syndromes during early childhood. Using latent class analysis, results revealed that behaviors clustered into two classes: a highly behavioral class characterized by emotion dysregulation difficulties (56%) and a normative class (44%). Predictors of autism classification and severity were included in the analysis but yielded no significant effects. These findings highlight the need to assess emotional regulation issues prior to formal schooling and to provide emotion-focused interventions that may foster the use of effective coping strategies. Study 2 utilizes a sample of children and adolescents with and without ID from a NICHD-funded longitudinal study (PIs: Bruce L. Baker, Jan Blacher, & Keith Crnic). The aim of Study 2 was (a) to examine the trajectory of behavior problems from ages g to 15 and (b) to explore whether a transactional relationship exists between behavior problems and social skills over these time points. Controlling for disability status, results of a fitted path analysis model revealed that ratings of behavior problems (internalizing and externalizing) and social skills were highly stable over time. A behavior-driven model fit the data best and revealed that behaviors in early adolescence significantly contributed to later social difficulties. Findings illustrate how challenging behaviors may impact emerging social competence during adolescent years. Implications for practice and future research directions are discussed.

Book excerpt: Arising from the Cohens' work on the epidemiology of childhood psychopathology, this book explores the two aspects of motivational structure--ideas and values--that underlie the development of maladaptive functioning and symptoms. The first aspect is a measure of what children admire in their peers; this measure is seen as an operationalization of personal ideals. The second is a measure of life goals, seen as a representation of the contemporary structure of long-term personal values. Despite the considerable amount of attention given in the popular press and among social critics and politicians, values have been relatively neglected as a topic of empirical research in this country. To fill the void, this work uses data from a large cohort of young people who have been studied longitudinally since early childhood to elucidate three aspects of life goals and values: * What are the demographic, family, peer, school, and intrapersonal influences that shape values and life goals of adolescents? * How do they change over the course of adolescence? * What impact do these values have on the lives of adolescents and young adults? Decisions about what we find most admirable and which of the many apparently good things in life we will take on as our top priorities are consequential both for the contemporary and for the future emotional and behavioral well-being of the individual. Thus, this book explores systematically the environmental origins of ideals and values, using deprivation and attainment hypotheses to examine a variety of influences on the development of differences in values. This book also examines the relationship between the measures of children's values and psychopathology, examining both the "Axis 1" diagnosis, including disruptive behavior disorders, depression, and anxiety, and the "Axis 2" personality disorders. Providing an extensive study of the life values of adolescents and the state of their mental health, this monograph will be of interest to developmental psychologists specializing in adolescence, child clinical psychologists, and psychiatrists.
