Book Development and Characterization of a Miniature Inductively Coupled Plasma Source for Atomic Emission Spectrometry

Download or read book Development and Characterization of a Miniature Inductively Coupled Plasma Source for Atomic Emission Spectrometry written by R. N. Savage and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A miniature inductively coupled plasma source for atomic emission spectrometry is described and a preliminary evaluation of its analytical capabilities is presented. The mini-ICP is very economical to sustain and works well with less than 1 kW of RF power and 8L/min of argon coolant gas. In addition, the new source possesses some unique operating characteristics which simplify sample introduction. In this paper, detection limits, multi-element capabilities, and other analytical features of the mini-ICP are compared with those demonstrated by a conventional ICP source and shown to be comparable. In addition, the two plasmas are shown to exhibit similar excitation temperatures in the respective analyte observation regions (i.e., plasma tail flames). These results suggest that the mini-ICP possesses the same desirable atomization and excitation characteristics as conventional ICP sources. (Author).

Book New High Temperature Plasmas and Sample Introduction Systems for Analytical Atomic Emission and Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book New High Temperature Plasmas and Sample Introduction Systems for Analytical Atomic Emission and Mass Spectrometry written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this project, new high temperature plasmas and new sample introduction systems are developed for rapid elemental and isotopic analysis of gases, solutions, and solids using atomic emission spectrometry (AES) and mass spectrometry (MS). These devices offer promise of solving singularly difficult analytical problems that either exist now or are likely to arise in the future in the various fields of energy generation, environmental pollution, nutrition, and biomedicine. Emphasis is being placed on: (a) generation of annular, helium inductively coupled plasmas (He ICPs) that are suitable for atomization, excitation, and ionization of elements possessing high excitation and ionization energies, with the intent of enhancing the detecting powers of a number of elements, (b) computer modelings of ICP discharges to predict the behavior of new and existing plasmas, (c) diagnostic studies of high-temperature plasmas and sample introduction systems to quantify their fundamental properties, with the ultimate aim to improve analytical performance of atomic spectrometry, (d) development and characterization of new, low-cost sample introduction systems that consume microliter or microgram quantities of samples, and (e) investigation of new membrane separators for stripping solvent from sample aerosol to reduce various interferences and to enhance sensitivity and selectivity in plasma spectrometry. 9 refs.

Book Volumetric Plasma Source Development and Characterization

Download or read book Volumetric Plasma Source Development and Characterization written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of plasma sources with densities and temperatures in the 1015-1017 cm−3 and 1-10eV ranges which are slowly varying over several hundreds of nanoseconds within several cubic centimeter volumes is of interest for applications such as intense electron beam focusing as part of the x-ray radiography program. In particular, theoretical work [1,2] suggests that replacing neutral gas in electron beam focusing cells with highly conductive, pre-ionized plasma increases the time-averaged e-beam intensity on target, resulting in brighter x-ray sources. This LDRD project was an attempt to generate such a plasma source from fine metal wires. A high voltage (20-60kV), high current (12-45kA) capacitive discharge was sent through a 100 [mu]m diameter aluminum wire forming a plasma. The plasma's expansion was measured in time and space using spectroscopic techniques. Lineshapes and intensities from various plasma species were used to determine electron and ion densities and temperatures. Electron densities from the mid-1015 to mid-1016 cm−3 were generated with corresponding electron temperatures of between 1 and 10eV. These parameters were measured at distances of up to 1.85 cm from the wire surface at times in excess of 1 [mu]s from the initial wire breakdown event. In addition, a hydrocarbon plasma from surface contaminants on the wire was also measured. Control of these contaminants by judicious choice of wire material, size, and/or surface coating allows for the ability to generate plasmas with similar density and temperature to those given above, but with lower atomic masses.

Book Analytical Atomic Spectrometry with Flames and Plasmas

Download or read book Analytical Atomic Spectrometry with Flames and Plasmas written by José A. C. Broekaert and published by John Wiley & Sons.
