Book The Synthesis Characterization and Electrochemical Analysis of Structured Polymer Electrolytes Having Strong Ionic Interactions

Download or read book The Synthesis Characterization and Electrochemical Analysis of Structured Polymer Electrolytes Having Strong Ionic Interactions written by Sebastian T. Russell and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymer electrolytes, ionic monomers catenated into a macromolecule, have received a considerable attention in the past decade as they combine the mechanical benefits of flexible chain with the ionic properties of liquid electrolytes. For this reason, they have been widely accepted as potential ion conducting membrane candidates for electrolyzers, energy storage devices, and desalination applications. In efforts to improve the efficiency of polymer electrolyte separators a block copolymer paradigm has been employed. This material's strategy allows for a spatial separation of the components that control the mechanical and electrochemical properties and thus enables independent engineering of each. Charge - neutral block copolymers (CN-BCPs), a diblock copolymer containing a polyelectrolyte block, attempt to leverage this paradigm, however, to date, the impact ions have on the CN-BCP self-assembly is still an open question. In this dissertation, we are devoted to uncovering the fundamental impact of ionic interactions on CN-BCP self-assembly in bulk and thin-films.

Book Novel Solvent Free Single Ion Conducting Polymer Electrolytes

Download or read book Novel Solvent Free Single Ion Conducting Polymer Electrolytes written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work carried out within this project has lead to the development of new types of dual composite PEO-based electrolytes having outstanding properties. This also, and particularly, applies to the new member of the family discussed in this report, i.e. the electrolyte formed by the combination of a calyx(6)pyrrole, CP anion-trapping compound with a large anion lithium salt, such as lithium bis(oxalate) borate, LiBOB. The results here described show that this combination gives rise to PEO-based polymer electrolytes having excellent transport properties. Polymer electrolyte membranes of the PEO20LiBOB(CP)0.125 composition have in the 80 C temperature range a lithium transference number of about 0.5 (versus the 0.3 value of conventional PEO systems) and an ionic conductivity of the order of 0.001 Scm-1.

Book Developing Rigid Polymer Electrolytes

Download or read book Developing Rigid Polymer Electrolytes written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a reprint of a paper published in Polymer Preprints, Vol. 45, No. 2, by the American Chemical Society in Fall 2004. The focus of this research is the synthesis and characterization of highly conductive rigid polymer electrolytes. Traditional solvent-free polymer electrolytes allow for long-range ion diffusion by means of ion-polymer coupling in the amorphous phase of the polymer host. Coupled systems typically require low glass transition temperatures for fast ion diffusion, resulting in poor mechanical properties when fillers are not added. The effort described here explores polymer electrolytes in which ion diffusion is decoupled from polymer motion. These materials allow for the development of polymers with desirable structure and fast ion transport at low temperatures. This is accomplished through the design of high dielectric polymer hosts with large internal free volume. The recently reported step polymerization using vinylene carbonate and oxalic acid derivatives was modified to eliminate the formation of a dominant byproduct, and extended to include more robust but less reactive monomers, including derivatives of 3-sulfolene, maleimide, and malonic acid.

Book Applications of Electroactive Polymers

Download or read book Applications of Electroactive Polymers written by Ger Stienen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electroactive polymers have been the object of increasing academic and industrial interest and in the past ten to fifteen years substantial progress has been achieved in the development and the characterization of this important new class of conducting materials. These materials are usually classified in two large groups, according to the mode of their electric transport. One group includes polymers having transport almost exclusively of the ionic type and they are often called 'polymer electrolytes' or, in a broader way, 'polymer ionics'. The other group includes polymeric materials where the transport mechanism is mainly electronic in nature and which are commonly termed 'conducting polymers'. Ionically conducting polymers or polymer ionics may be typically described as polar macromolecular solids in which one or more of a wide range of salts has been dissolved. The most classic example is the combina tion of poly(ethylene oxide), PEO, and lithium salts, LiX. These PEO-LiX polymer ionics were first described and proposed for applications just over ten years ago. The practical relevance of these new materials was im mediately recognized and in the course of a few years the field expanded tremendously with the involvement of many academic and industrial lab oratories. Following this diversified research activity, the ionic transport mechanism in polymer ionics was soon established and this has led to the development of new host polymers of various types, new salts and advanced polymer architectures which have enabled room temperature conductivity to be raised by several orders of magnitude.
