Book Experimental Study of Stir Casted Aluminium Metal Matrix Composite for Automobile Application

Download or read book Experimental Study of Stir Casted Aluminium Metal Matrix Composite for Automobile Application written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The premature failure in service of automobile components made up of aluminium and its alloys due to low mechanical strength, poor tribological behaviour, and poor thermal stability amounted to the emergence of composite materials, which exhibit better performance and could mitigate material failure in service. Aluminium based metal matrix composites were fabricated by two-step stir casting process using Si3N4 and ZrB2 as the reinforcing phases and AA8011 as the matrix phase. In this work, optical microscope (OPM), scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and x-ray diffraction (XRD) were employed to examine the morphological evolution and the phases available in the developed composites. The hardness property, tensile strength, wear and friction response, and thermal behaviour were investigated using Vickers hardness tester, universal material testing (TQ SM 1000), universal tribometer (RTECH 2441), thermogravimetric analyzer (Perkin Elmer TGA 4000), and differential thermal analyzer (NETZSCH DTA 404) respectively. The corrosion performance of the developed composites was analyzed by linear polarization route in 0.5 M acidic environment (H2SO4). From the outcome of the experiments, the morphological appearance shows that the particulates were well dispersed in the AA8011 matrix, though sparingly distributed in composite with low percentage weight fraction of the particulates. The uniform dispersion of the particulates embedded in the matrix resulted to strong adhesion with negligible material defect between the two phases, and this was made possible by the process parameters employed during the two-step stir casting process. Generally, in all the developed composites viz: AA8011-xSi3N4, AA8011-xZrB2, and AA8011- Si3N4-ZrB2 composites (with the varying weight compositions of 0 wt.%, 5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, 15 wt.% and 20 wt.% of Si3N4, ZrB2, and Si3N4+ZrB2 particulates); composites with 20 wt.% fraction of the reinforcing Si3N4, ZrB2 and Si3N4+ZrB2 particulates possessed excellent properties in all the mechanical, corrosion and tribological evaluations carried out in comparison with the unreinforced AA8011. The melting temperature of the developed composites increases with an increase in the weight fraction of the particulates inclusion as revealed by DTA and affirmed by TGA for both the binary and the ternary composites. However, AA8011-20 wt.% ZrB2 possessed the best performing properties: highest hardness 63.84 HV and ultimate tensile strength 212.4 MPa, and the lowest wear rate 1.42 x 10-3 mm3/m with low coefficient of friction 0.117. Whereas, the hybrid composite of AA8011- 20wt.% Si3N4-ZrB2 had the lowest corrosion rate 0.9974 mm/yr, high melting temperature 676oC and the lowest weight loss 0.11 mg as a function of temperature.

Book Metallic Amorphous Alloy Reinforcements in Light Metal Matrices

Download or read book Metallic Amorphous Alloy Reinforcements in Light Metal Matrices written by S. Jayalakshmi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents cutting-edge research on the design and development of novel, advanced high-strength, light-weight materials via the incorporation of novel reinforcements, namely, metallic amorphous alloys/bulk metallic glasses (BMG), in light metal matrix composites (LMMCs) based on Al and Mg. The book begins with an introduction to conventional ceramic reinforced light metal matrix composites, along with the major drawbacks which limit their application. Metallic amorphous alloys/Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMG) are new class of metallic materials that are distinctly differently from conventional metals/alloys in terms of their structure and thermal behavior, and exhibit extremely high strength (1 to 2 GPa) and large elastic strain limit (1 to 2%). Given these unique properties, upon their incorporation into Al/Mg-matrices, they provide superior interfacial properties, i.e. high degree of compatibility with the matrix due to their metallic nature when compared to conventional ceramic reinforcements, and thereby significantly enhance the mechanical performance of LMMCs. Amorphous/BMG reinforced LMMCs is an emerging research field and the existing literature is meager. This book discusses the various processing methods that would be suitable for these novel materials. A comparison of mechanical properties and strengthening mechanisms of amorphous/BMG reinforced composites with those of conventional ceramic composites is presented. Future research directions and wider research potential of the novel materials are discussed, and prospective applications are highlighted. For ease of understanding and comparison, appropriate schematics, tables, and figures are provided.
