Book excerpt: Wisconsin vegetable crops are threatened annually by the occurrence of aster yellows (AY), a disease caused by the aster yellows phytoplasma (AYp). The AYp is transmitted primarily by the aster leafhopper (ALH) in a persistent-propagative manner and disease control focuses on controlling the ALH. The decision to implement an insecticide spray is based upon the Aster Yellows Index (AYI), which is a calculation of the allowable numbers of ALH for a crop at a particular infectivity rate. Since its development, the AYI has been refined to include treatment thresholds for crops with differing susceptibility to AY. Additionally, tools for detecting AYp in plants and insects have been developed and components of the index, abundance and infectivity, are known to vary spatially and temporally. The primary goal of this research was to advance the understanding of aster yellows epidemiology in Wisconsin towards the development and implementation of a comprehensive management plan. Specifically, we developed molecular tools to accurately determine the rate of infectious individuals in a population of ALH, analyzed ALH scouting data to identify seasonal trends in factors associated with periods of elevated AY risk, and refined the integrated pest management program in processing carrot production to include reduced-risk insecticides. The primary contributions of this work have been to demonstrate qPCR as a reliable and accurate method to measure AYp titer in the ALH and detect differences of AYp titer among groups of insects. Additionally, we demonstrated the utility of long-term data sets for improving the understanding of spatial and temporal patterns of variation of insect abundance and infectivity and discussed the use of contemporary statistical methodologies including generalized linear mixed models and generalized additive mixed models for the analysis of long-term ecological data. From this work, a timing interval that resulted from the coincidence of above average ALH abundance and infectivity was identified and represents a `treatment window' during which management of the insect could be focused. The improvements to diagnostic, detection, and vector monitoring systems are anticipated to benefit agricultural producers and will aid in properly timing vector control measures to times when plant protection is most needed.
