Book An Automated Procedure for the Optimization of Practical Aerospace Structures

Download or read book An Automated Procedure for the Optimization of Practical Aerospace Structures written by Walter J. Dwyer and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report documents the development of a new structural optimization algorithm, which is a combination of a modified fully stressed design technique and a redesign procedure based on gradients to deflection constraint surfaces. The algorithm is incorporated into a large finite element program based on the displacement method of structural analysis. Using an IBM 360/75 computer, the program is capable of obtaining near optimum distributions of material for structural idealizations consisting of up to three thousand elements and six thousand degrees of freedom, and subjected to a maximum of twenty loading conditions. Constraints may be placed on the maximum and minimum size of any of the elements, on the stresses in the elements, and on the displacements of the nodal points of the structure. Several examples of structures that were optimized are included to demonstrate the various features of the program, and to compare results with previously obtained solutions. To help make the program useful in the design of major aircraft structures, care has been taken to simplify the input and to present the program output in a form that is meaningful to the aircraft stress engineer. Results of an exploratory investigation into the optimization of dynamically loaded structures are presented, and the conversion of two existing blast-response shell codes into a unified synthesis program is documented.

Book Discretization Methods and Structural Optimization Procedures and Applications

Download or read book Discretization Methods and Structural Optimization Procedures and Applications written by Hans A. Eschenauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the Finite Element Methods FEM were more and more employed in development and design departments as very fast working tools in order to determine stresses, deformations, eigenfrequencies etc. for all kinds of constructions under complex loading conditions. Meanwhile. very effective software systems have been developed by various research teams although some mathematical problems (e. g. convergence) have not been solved satisfac torily yet. In order to make further advances and to find a common language between mathe maticians and mechanicians the "Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics" (GAMM) agreed on the foundation of a special Committee: "Discretization Methods in Solid Mechanics" focussing on the following problems: - Structuring of various methods (displacement functions, hybrid and mixed approaches, etc. >, - Survey of approach functions (Lagrange-/Hermite-polynominals, Spline-functions), - Description of singularities, - Convergence and stability, - Practical and theoretical optimality to all mentioned issues (single and interacting). One of the basic aims of the GAMM-Committee is the interdisciplinary cooperation between mechanicians, mathematicians, and users which shall be intensified. Thus, on September 22, 1985 the committee decided to hold a seminar on "Structural Optimization" in order to allow an exchange of experiences and thoughts between the experts of finite element methods and those of structural optimization. A GAMM-seminar entitled "Discretization Methods and Structural Optimization - Procedures and Applications" was hold on October 5-7, 1988 at the Unversity of Siegen.

Book Structural Design Applications of Mathematical Programming Techniques

Download or read book Structural Design Applications of Mathematical Programming Techniques written by North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development. Structures and Materials Panel and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The document describes the present state of development of the use of mathematical programming techniques in the optimum design of aerospace and similar structures. Although optimization with respect to cost is considered when possible, the main emphasis is on the minimization of weight, due to the overwhelming importance of this parameter in aerospace applications, and also due to the fact that it is one of the few merit functions that can be defined with reasonable precision. The use of mathematical programming techniques in the selection of materials is also discussed to the limited extent meaningful at the present time. (Author).

Book Modeling and Optimization in Space Engineering

Download or read book Modeling and Optimization in Space Engineering written by Giorgio Fasano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-23 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a selection of advanced case studies that address a substantial range of issues and challenges arising in space engineering. The contributing authors are well-recognized researchers and practitioners in space engineering and in applied optimization. The key mathematical modeling and numerical solution aspects of each application case study are presented in sufficient detail. Classic and more recent space engineering problems – including cargo accommodation and object placement, flight control of satellites, integrated design and trajectory optimization, interplanetary transfers with deep space manoeuvres, low energy transfers, magnetic cleanliness modeling, propulsion system design, sensor system placement, systems engineering, space traffic logistics, and trajectory optimization – are discussed. Novel points of view related to computational global optimization and optimal control, and to multidisciplinary design optimization are also given proper emphasis. A particular attention is paid also to scenarios expected in the context of future interplanetary explorations. Modeling and Optimization in Space Engineering will benefit researchers and practitioners working on space engineering applications. Academics, graduate and post-graduate students in the fields of aerospace and other engineering, applied mathematics, operations research and optimal control will also find the book useful, since it discusses a range of advanced model development and solution techniques and tools in the context of real-world applications and new challenges.

Book A Framework for Preliminary Design of Aircraft Structures Based on Process Information Part 1

Download or read book A Framework for Preliminary Design of Aircraft Structures Based on Process Information Part 1 written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report discusses the general framework and development of a computational tool for preliminary design of aircraft structures based on process information. The described methodology is suitable for multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) activities associated with integrated product and process development (IPPD). The framework consists of three parts: (1) product and process definitions; (2) engineering synthesis, and (3) optimization. The product and process definitions are part of input information provided by the design team. The backbone of the system is its ability to analyze a given structural design for performance as well as manufacturability and cost assessment. The system uses a database on material systems and manufacturing processes. Based on the identified set of design variables and an objective function, the system is capable of performing optimization subject to manufacturability, cost, and performance constraints. The accuracy of the manufacturability measures and cost models discussed here depend largely on the available data on specific methods of manufacture and assembly and associated labor requirements. As such, our focus in this research has been on the methodology itself and not so much on its accurate implementation in an industrial setting. A three-tier approach is presented for an IPPD-MDO based design of aircraft structures. The variable-complexity cost estimation methodology and an approach for integrating manufacturing cost assessment into design process are also discussed. This report is presented in two parts. In the first part, the design methodology is presented, and the computational design tool is described. In the second part, a prototype model of the preliminary design Tool for Aircraft Structures based on Process Information (TASPI) is described. Part two also contains an example problem that applies the methodology described here for evaluation of six different design concepts for a wing spar. Rais-Rohani, Masoud Lang...
