Book The Political Economy of Ethnic Conflict in Sri Lanka

Download or read book The Political Economy of Ethnic Conflict in Sri Lanka written by Nikolaos Biziouras and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the point of independence in 1948, Sri Lanka was projected to be a success story in the developing world. However, in July 1983 a violent ethnic conflict which pitted the Sinhalese against the Tamils began, and did not come to an end until 2009. This conflict led to nearly 50,000 combatant deaths and approximately 40,000 civilian deaths, as well as almost 1 million internally-displaced refugees and to the permanent migration abroad of nearly 130,000 civilians. With a focus on Sri Lanka, this book explores the political economy of ethnic conflict, and examines how rival political leaders are able to convince their ethnic group members to follow them into violent conflict. Specifically, it looks at how political leaders can influence and utilize changes in the level of economic liberalization in order to mobilize members of a certain ethnic group, and in the case of Sri Lanka, shows how ethnic mobilization drives can turn violent when minority ethnic groups are economically marginalized by the decisions that the majority ethnic group leaders make in order to stay in power. Taking a political economy approach to the conflict in Sri Lanka, this book is unique in its historical analysis and provides a longitudinal view of the evolution of both Tamil and Sinhalese ethnic drives. As such, this interdisciplinary study will be of interest to policy makers as well as academics in the field of South Asian studies, political science, sociology, development studies, political economy and security studies.

Book Decentralization and Development of Sri Lanka Within a Unitary State

Download or read book Decentralization and Development of Sri Lanka Within a Unitary State written by N.S. Cooray and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume provides uniquely diverse insights into various aspects of decentralization and development from both developed and developing countries, with special reference to Sri Lanka. For a quarter century, Sri Lanka was battered by its prolonged civil war, which ended in 2009, but has now achieved relative peace and stability. Having developed rapidly, Sri Lanka offers a classic example for developing countries. There is, however, a strong need, particularly in the context of postwar conflict, to formulate policies for reconciliation, peace building, and development at all levels—local, provincial, and national. Decentralization itself is not a new subject; however, how to devolve power to local administrative levels within a unitary system and how to link the devolved power to make local administrative systems more conducive to development and provide better services for citizens are challenging tasks in many countries. Taking into account the developmental, governance, and conciliatory needs and the sensitivity of central–local relations, this volume critically examines the local government systems in Sri Lanka. It also proposes a viable, effective and autonomous local-level administrative unit based, which draws on experiences from Japan and other countries, and identifies the role and functions of such a unit. The book presents commissioned papers from a three-year research project undertaken by internationally respected experts with financial support by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) under a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research.

Book Crime Justice and Society in Colonial Sri Lanka

Download or read book Crime Justice and Society in Colonial Sri Lanka written by John D. Rogers and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-03 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime, Justice and Society in Colonial Sri Lanka (1987) examines Sri Lanka’s justice system under British rule, and concentrates on two of its aspects: the effectiveness of the administration of law and order, and the relationship between crime and social change. It argues that the colonial judicial system did penetrate rural areas, but did not operate in the way the British intended. Instead, Sri Lankans adapted the state institutions so that they functioned more effectively within indigenous culture.

Book The Changing Face of Electoral Politics in Sri Lanka 1994 2004

Download or read book The Changing Face of Electoral Politics in Sri Lanka 1994 2004 written by Laksiri Jayasuriya and published by Cavendish Square Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sri Lanka has been through turbulent times, overcome by a devastating civil war, yet able to sustain a system of parliamentary government. This study recounts a critical decade of electoral politics in Sri Lanka from 1994 to 2004, situated in the context of a militant ethnic conflict, that includes four General Elections and a Presidential election. The new politics of Sri Lanka, evident in this decade, is marked by a party system that is increasingly fractured, a politics increasingly divided over symbolic cultural issues, and the tension inherent in a mixed executive system. The coalitional dynamics of this new politics represents a decisive break with the welfarist politics of the post-independence period evolved within the Westminster system, a legacy of the colonial past. In a Postscript, Jayasuriya examines the politics of tsunami as it impacts on the critical fault lines of Sir Lankan politics in the North, East and South as well as the neo-geopolitics. This volume will be essential to anyone interested in Sri Lanka's unique experience as a third-world country with democratic political processes and instruments for over five decades.

Book Development and Welfare Policy in South Asia

Download or read book Development and Welfare Policy in South Asia written by Gabriele Koehler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds light on social policies in six South Asian countries introduced between 2003 and 2013, examining the ways in which these policies have come about, and what this reflects about the nature of the state in each of these countries. It offers a detailed analysis of the nature of these policies introduced in recent years in Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and illustrates the similarities and differences in policy approaches amongst the six countries. Through this analysis, the book explores the thesis of whether there is a particular type of ‘developmental welfare state’ that can be observed across South Asia. The focus is on social policies or policies designed to address poverty and deliver welfare at the level of programming and design, i.e. the stated intent of these policies. The book also presents an analysis of the fiscal space available in each of the six countries, thereby drawing conclusions about the financial feasibility of a ‘developmental welfare state’ model in the region. This comprehensive book uniquely explores critical aspects of policy debates on a possible move from welfare to ‘rights’. It introduces students and researchers in development studies, social policy and South Asian studies to innovative welfare programmes in South Asia and gives a new perspective on the nature and patterns of welfare in South Asia with the view of tackling inequality and promoting well-being.
