Book Heritage Speakers of Spanish Learning to Write in Their Heritage Language

Download or read book Heritage Speakers of Spanish Learning to Write in Their Heritage Language written by Clara Salto-Weis Azevedo and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As more heritage Spanish-speaking students enter universities across the country and more specific language courses are offered to them, the more instructors know about how heritage speakers write in Spanish the better they can meet their students' language needs. This dissertation study examined writing skill development in heritage speakers (HS) of Spanish. Heritage speakers tend to have well-developed oral skills, but limited writing skills. While previous research has indicated that HS writing is different than second language (L2) writing (Camus & Adrada-Rafael, 2015; Sánchez Abchi & De Mier, 2017; Silva, Sánchez Abchi, & Borzone, 2010) and others have defended that it has some similarities with native speaker (NS) writing (Spicer-Escalante, 2003, 2005, 2007), much of this research was done based on learners writing one text. The current study offers a longitudinal perspective by following four HS college students over the course of a semester and analyzing assignments they wrote for a Spanish for heritage speakers course during their early stages of learning to write in Spanish. To give a wider viewpoint of the learning process, participants were interviewed three times along the way. They shared their perspectives about their own learning process as well as the writing elements they thought would be easier and more challenging to achieve in that process. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were applied to investigate the following three research questions: (1) Over the course of a one-semester, college-level Spanish for HSs course, how does learners' writing develop in terms of syntactic complexity, accuracy, and fluency, and in terms of structure? (2) What do HSs see as challenges and what do they see as easily achievable writing components in the process of learning how to write in Spanish? (3) To what degree are these challenges and easily achievable writing components reflected in the writing samples that learners completed as course requirements during the semester of observation? Results showed that participants used the language tools available to them from being bilinguals and having previous writing experiences, that is their writing English skills and applied them to their Spanish writing practices. This can be seen in the syntactic complexity levels they all produced from the very first text they wrote. The more Spanish-specific writing elements such as accent marks and spelling were sources for error as they pertain only to written Spanish and, therefore, the HSs' oral experience with the language did not help them. During the interviews, participants tended to express expectations that global writing characteristics would be easier when learning to write in Spanish, as they were counting on their English writing skills. However, L1 transfer happened more at the local level of sentence structure and words and less at the global level of discourse structure and register. Many factors seem to affect HSs' writing skills, and assumptions should not be made about their writing proficiency based on their oral proficiency.

Book Yo Se Espa ol Requetebien

Download or read book Yo Se Espa ol Requetebien written by Beatriz Espitia and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Question: What happens if I use Language Experience Approach to teach reading and writing in a Spanish class for native speakers? Research Activities: All the students who enrolled in Spanish for native speakers' class already speak Spanish as their first language, but often these students have had few opportunities to acquire written abilities in Spanish. These bilingual students typically enroll in Spanish for native speakers classes at the high school level, where they are taught about the grammar of Spanish, and how to write for personal as well as expository purposes. This inquiry research focused on an approach that teaches writing which draws from students' background to develop their written ideas. This way of teaching writing is called Language Experience Approach (LEA). The Language Experience Approach is an approach that uses students' oral language to develop their reading and writing skills. The purpose of the study was to analyze how using a version of the Language Experience Approach helps students improve their reading and writing skills in Spanish. The intervention was conducted with a small group of four students at different proficiency levels in Spanish, two high performing and two average performing. There were three different data sets collected: two surveys, three writing samples and several observational notes in the course of three weeks. The focus of the research was to examine the individual performance of each student using the LEA. The sub-questions were: What is the difference between their writing and reading of LEA and the textbook we use in the class? How will the production and comprehension differ between the two texts, LEA and the classroom textbook? Students writing and reading skills improved greatly from the first LEA story to the third LEA story, since they were able to incorporate their personal experiences to develop their literacy skills. Compared to textbook material, students engaged in and improved their sentence structure and descriptive detail with LEA activities. Grade Level: Secondary, 9-10. Subject: Spanish. Project Descriptor: Survey-Attitude, Observation-Field notes, Observation-Student Engagement, Writing Samples, Language Experience Approach.

Book The Changing Landscape of Spanish Language Curricula

Download or read book The Changing Landscape of Spanish Language Curricula written by Alan V. Brown and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish remains a large and constant fixture in the foreign language learning landscape in the United States. As Spanish language study has grown, so too has the diversity of students and contexts of use, placing the field in the midst of a curricular identity crisis. Spanish has become a second, rather than a foreign, language in the US, which leads to unique opportunities and challenges for curriculum and syllabus design, materials development, individual and program assessment, and classroom pedagogy. In their book, Brown and Thompson address these challenges and provide a vision of Spanish language education for the twenty-first century. Using data from the College Board, ETS, and the authors’ own institutions, as well as responses to their national survey of almost seven hundred Spanish language educators, the authors argue that the field needs to evolve to reflect changes in the sociocultural, socioeducational, and sociopolitical landscape of the US. The authors provide coherent and compelling discussion of the most pressing issues facing Spanish post-secondary education and strategies for converting these challenges into opportunities. Topics that are addressed in the book include: Heritage learners, service learning in Spanish-speaking communities, Spanish for specific purposes, assessment, unique needs for Spanish teacher training, online and hybrid teaching, and the relevance of ACTFL’s national standards for Spanish post-secondary education. An essential read for Spanish language scholars, especially those interested in curriculum design and pedagogy, that includes supporting reflection questions and pedagogical activities for use in upper-level undergraduate and graduate-level courses.

Book Lexical Errors and Accuracy in Foreign Language Writing

Download or read book Lexical Errors and Accuracy in Foreign Language Writing written by María del Pilar Agustín Llach and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lexical errors are a determinant in gaining insight into vocabulary acquisition, vocabulary use and writing quality assessment. Lexical errors are very frequent in the written production of young EFL learners, but they decrease as learners gain proficiency. Misspellings are the most common category, but formal errors give way to semantic-based lexical errors as proficiency increases, likewise, the direct influence of the L1 also reduces in favour of more elaborated transfer mechanisms and L2 influence. The different categories of lexical errors indicate the stage of learning. This book uses a study of young EFL learners to suggest that lexical accuracy is a crucial component of writing assessment, and that lexical errors are useful in predicting writing quality.
