Book Estimation of Costs for Applications of Remediation Technologies for the Department of Energy s Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement

Download or read book Estimation of Costs for Applications of Remediation Technologies for the Department of Energy s Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Programmatic Environmental impact Statement (PEIS) being developed by the US Department of Energy (DOE) for environmental restoration (ER) and waste management (WM) activities expected to be carried out across the DOE's nationwide complex of facilities is assessing the impacts of removing, transporting, treating, storing, and disposing of waste from these ER and WM activities. Factors being considered include health and safety impacts to the public and to workers, impacts on the environment, costs and socio-economic impacts, and near-term and residual risk during those ER and WM operations. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the methodology developed specifically for the PEIS to estimate costs associated with the deployment and application of individual remediation technologies. These individual costs are used in developing order-of-magnitude cost estimates for the total remediation activities. Costs are developed on a per-unit-of-material-to-be-treated basis (i.e., $/m3) to accommodate remediation projects of varying sizes. The primary focus of this cost-estimating effort was the development of capital and operating unit cost factors based on the amount of primary media to be removed, handled, and treated. The unit costs for individual treatment technologies were developed using information from a variety of sources, mainly from periodicals, EPA documentation, handbooks, vendor contacts, and cost models. The unit cost factors for individual technologies were adjusted to 1991 dollars.

Book Modern Project Management Techniques for the Environmental Remediation Industry

Download or read book Modern Project Management Techniques for the Environmental Remediation Industry written by Timothy J. Havranek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental remediation has brought significant improvements to industrial sites and surrounding communities throughout the nation. It's also become notorious for high budget overruns and frequent schedule delays, as environmental remediation's technological aspects become subject to political, managerial and economic concerns. Modern Project Management (MPM) Processes offer a new framework for remediation programs, geared to increased efficiency and precise troubleshooting. Environmental consultant and certified project management professional (PMP) Timothy J. Havranek has helped various companies put MPM into practice: now, he brings his techniques to the environmental remediation industry at large. Melding traditional project management structure and advanced strategic planning techniques to the needs of environmental remediation, Modern Project Management Techniques for the Environmental Remediation Industry presents this major innovation: a standardized planning process, applicable to all types of remediation projects. Every participant in an environmental remediation effort can mutually benefit from Modern Project Management Techniques for the Environmental Remediation Industry. Environmental consultants will discover precise budget and schedule-planning skills-quite an advantage in their increasingly competitive industry. Customers will also know what to consider when selecting an environmental services company, and discover advanced methods for reducing project costs and durations. Book Overview of Cost Estimating for Abandoned Mine Lands and Hazardous Materials Cleanup Projects

Download or read book Overview of Cost Estimating for Abandoned Mine Lands and Hazardous Materials Cleanup Projects written by Pamela S. Innis and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication provides information on the procedures and activities associated with cost estimating for environmental response projects. Costs estimates are used to help define the magnitude of the project and accuracy of the total expense, depending on the stage of a project. This publication is intended to assist environmental professionals with determining the level of accuracy and detail required for each project estimate. The goals of this reference are to provide an understanding of the need for cost estimates, to improve the consistency of cost estimates developed in support of abandoned mine lands and hazardous materials site evaluations and remedy selections, and to establish classifications that define the level of confidence in the estimate at various stages within a cleanup project. Four different cost estimating methods are described for consideration. Utilization of this guidance will assist the environmental professional in developing a reproducible estimate appropriate for the phase of a project.

Book Contaminants in the Subsurface

Download or read book Contaminants in the Subsurface written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-04-23 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At hundreds of thousands of commercial, industrial, and military sites across the country, subsurface materials including groundwater are contaminated with chemical waste. The last decade has seen growing interest in using aggressive source remediation technologies to remove contaminants from the subsurface, but there is limited understanding of (1) the effectiveness of these technologies and (2) the overall effect of mass removal on groundwater quality. This report reviews the suite of technologies available for source remediation and their ability to reach a variety of cleanup goals, from meeting regulatory standards for groundwater to reducing costs. The report proposes elements of a protocol for accomplishing source remediation that should enable project managers to decide whether and how to pursue source remediation at their sites.
