Book Development of a Miniature VTOL Tail sitter Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Download or read book Development of a Miniature VTOL Tail sitter Unmanned Aerial Vehicle written by Jeffrey V. Hogge and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design, analysis, construction and flight testing of a miniature Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) tail-sitter Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) prototype is presented in detail. Classic aircraft design methods were combined with numerical analysis to estimate the aircraft performance and flight characteristics. The numerical analysis employed a propeller blade-element theory coupled with momentum equations to predict the influence of a propeller slipstream on the freestream flow field, then the aircraft was analyzed using 3-D vortex lifting-line theory to model finite wings immersed in the flow field. Four prototypes were designed, built, and tested and the evolution of these prototypes is presented. The final prototype design is discussed in detail. A method for sizing control surfaces for a tail-sitter was defined. The final prototype successfully demonstrated controllability both in horizontal flight and vertical flight. Significant contributions included the development of a control system that was effective in hover as well as descending vertical flight, and the development of a strong but light weight airframe. The aircraft had a payload weight fraction of 14.5% and a maximum dimension of one meter, making it the smallest tail-sitter UAV to carry a useful payload. This project is expected to provide a knowledge base for the future design of small electric VTOL tail-sitter aircraft and to provide an airframe for future use in tail-sitter research.

Book Adaptive Hybrid Control of Quadrotor Drones

Download or read book Adaptive Hybrid Control of Quadrotor Drones written by Nihal Dalwadi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the dynamics of a tail-sitter quadrotor and biplane quadrotor-type hybrid unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and, based on it, various nonlinear controllers design like backstepping control (BSC), ITSMC (Integral Terminal Sliding Mode Control), and hybrid controller (BSC + ITSMC). It discusses single and multiple observer-based control strategies to handle external disturbances like wind gusts and estimate states. It covers the dynamics of slung load with a biplane quadrotor and a control architecture to handle the effect of partial rotor failure with wind gusts acting on it. An anti-swing control to prevent damage to the slung load and a deflecting surface-based total rotor failure compensation strategy to prevent damage to the biplane quadrotor are also discussed in this book. The monograph will be helpful for undergraduate and post-graduate students as well as researchers in their advanced studies.

Book Vision based Control and Autonomous Landing of a VTOL UAV

Download or read book Vision based Control and Autonomous Landing of a VTOL UAV written by Kurtis W. Schram and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quadrotor used is a common low cost platform with a large open source community. Firstly, non-linear estimation and control techniques are implemented for the attitude stabilization using low-cost sensors and limited computational power. Some methods for the system parameters estimation are presented and some challenges related to the implementation are discussed. Despite the ability of the attitude controller to stabilize the orientation of the quadrotor, hovering and landing precisely over a specific area is not possible without a position stabilization scheme. In applications where GPS signals are not available and the hovering target is a priori unknown, it is common to rely on visual information. In this context, this thesis aims for the development of an efficient optical-flow-based position stabilization and autonomous landing scheme for the quadrotor UAV."-- from abstract.

Book Autonomous Control of A Quadrotor UAV Using Fuzzy Logic

Download or read book Autonomous Control of A Quadrotor UAV Using Fuzzy Logic written by Vijaykumar Sureshkumar FNU and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: UAVs are being increasingly used today than ever before in both military and civil applications. They are heavily preferred in "dull, dirty or dangerous" mission scenarios. Increasingly, UAVs of all kinds are being used in policing, fire-fighting, inspection of structures, pipelines etc. Recently, the FAA gave its permission for UAVs to be used on film sets for motion capture and high definition video recording. The rapid development in MEMS and actuator technology has made possible a plethora of UAVs that are suited for commercial applications in an increasingly cost effective manner. An emerging popular rotary wing UAV platform is the Quadrotor A Quadrotor is a helicopter with four rotors, that make it more stable; but more complex to model and control. Characteristics that provide a clear advantage over other fixed wing UAVs are VTOL and hovering capabilities as well as a greater maneuverability. It is also simple in construction and design compared to a scaled single rotorcraft. Flying such UAVs using a traditional radio Transmitter-Receiver setup can be a daunting task especially in high stress situations. In order to make such platforms widely applicable, a certain level of autonomy is imperative to the future of such UAVs. This thesis paper presents a methodology for the autonomous control of a Quadrotor UAV using Fuzzy Logic. Fuzzy logic control has been chosen over conventional control methods as it can deal effectively with highly nonlinear systems, allows for imprecise data and is extremely modular. Modularity and adaptability are the key cornerstones of FLC. The objective of this thesis is to present the steps of designing, building and simulating an intelligent flight control module for a Quadrotor UAV. In the course of this research effort, a Quadrotor UAV is indigenously developed utilizing the resources of an online open source project called Aeroquad. System design is comprehensively dealt with. A math model for the Quadrotor is developed and a simulation environment is built in the MATLAB/Simulink framework. The Fuzzy flight controller development is discussed intensively. Validation of the math model developed is presented using actual flight data. Excellent attitude tracking is demonstrated for near hover flight regimes. The responses are analyzed and future work involving implementation is discussed.

Book Development and Testing of a VTOL UAV

Download or read book Development and Testing of a VTOL UAV written by Andrew Lee Cibula and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to develop a testing platform to prepare a Vertical Takeoff and Landing Unmanned Air Vehicle (VTOL UAV) for fully independent flight tests. Other preparations for flight included extensive engine thrust and endurance testing to fully evaluate the capabilities of the engine used. Also, redesign of the fuel system allowed more efficient use of the fuel onboard. Commands for thrust and steering data were transmitted to the VTOL UAV via an RF uplink while UAV attitude and positional data were returned by means of an umbilical cable. Throttle settings, vane control, and a kill switch were incorporated in the RP uplink. The testing platform was developed to allow the VTOL UAV to hover in a confined area with limited movement in order to accurately monitor the effectiveness of the flight control system. In this regard, the vehicle was allowed only several feet of movement in any direction by fastening it in an aluminum cubical frame designed for this purpose. This thesis was carried out in conjunction with another flight control project and was aimed at providing the vehicle a platform in which to operate within a constricted area.

Book Small Unmanned Aircraft

Download or read book Small Unmanned Aircraft written by Randal W. Beard and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-26 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autonomous unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) are critical to current and future military, civil, and commercial operations. Despite their importance, no previous textbook has accessibly introduced UAVs to students in the engineering, computer, and science disciplines--until now. Small Unmanned Aircraft provides a concise but comprehensive description of the key concepts and technologies underlying the dynamics, control, and guidance of fixed-wing unmanned aircraft, and enables all students with an introductory-level background in controls or robotics to enter this exciting and important area. The authors explore the essential underlying physics and sensors of UAV problems, including low-level autopilot for stability and higher-level autopilot functions of path planning. The textbook leads the student from rigid-body dynamics through aerodynamics, stability augmentation, and state estimation using onboard sensors, to maneuvering through obstacles. To facilitate understanding, the authors have replaced traditional homework assignments with a simulation project using the MATLAB/Simulink environment. Students begin by modeling rigid-body dynamics, then add aerodynamics and sensor models. They develop low-level autopilot code, extended Kalman filters for state estimation, path-following routines, and high-level path-planning algorithms. The final chapter of the book focuses on UAV guidance using machine vision. Designed for advanced undergraduate or graduate students in engineering or the sciences, this book offers a bridge to the aerodynamics and control of UAV flight.
