The descriptive research method was used to answer the following questions: (a) What is the intended purpose of a rapid damage assessment, (b) what does the Federal Emergency Management Agency recommend as standardized information that should be included in a rapid damage assessment, (c) what does the State of Kansas Division of Disaster Management recommend as standardized information that should be included in a rapid damage assessment? The procedures utilized to answer the afore-mentioned research questions consisted of a literature review and a personal communication conducted via telephone that was guided by a semi-structured list of interview questions. The results of this applied research project included standardized information obtained from both the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the State of Kansas Division of Emergency Management that are recommended to be included in a rapid damage assessment job aid. Recommendations based upon the findings of this applied research project included a proposed Overland Park Fire Department rapid damage assessment job aid and an informational and/or educational session with senior leadership from the Overland Park Fire Department and the City of Overland Park Executive Leadership Team to outline and/or explain the findings presented in this document, specifically an in-depth overview of the established recommendations set forth by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the State of Kansas Division of Emergency Management as it pertains to the information contained in a rapid damage assessment.

Book Developing a Standardized Rapid Damage Assessment Procedure for the Wichita Fire Department

Download or read book Developing a Standardized Rapid Damage Assessment Procedure for the Wichita Fire Department written by Sidney J. Newby and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study found that conducting a rapid damage assessment was an effective method to make emergency response officials aware of what type of resources, how many, and what location they were needed most during a disaster. This program would be carried out by community firehouse suppression personnel in order to quickly get responders into the field to assess potentially life threatening damage using standardized forms carried in each emergency response vehicle. Book excerpt: The problem was that Plant City Fire Rescue (PCFR) does not have a damage assessment procedure. The lack of a damage assessment procedure has delayed state and federal assistance for recovery after a natural disaster. The purpose of this applied research project (ARP) was to develop a damage assessment procedure for Plant City Fire Rescue (PCFR). Action methodology was used to guide the study. The research questions were: (a) What components shall be used in the development of a damage assessment plan? (b) Is there a local, state, or national procedure in place to conduct damage assessment? (c) Do other fire service agencies in Florida conduct damage assessment? (d) What software is available to assist in documenting damage assessment? The procedures used to collect the data were: A personal interview was conducted with an expert in the emergency management industry. One external survey was designed to determine if Florida fire departments conduct damage assessment. The results determined that it is essential that PCFR have an initial damage assessment procedure to utilize after a natural disaster. The use of software was being used by agencies when collecting damage assessment data. An SOP was drafted considering all relevant components identified within the results. The SOP will provide guidance for PCFR personnel to effectively conduct initial damage assessment. The SOP draft should be reviewed prior to implementation along with all PCFR personnel trained to conduct initial damage assessment.

Book Rapid Assessment Process

Download or read book Rapid Assessment Process written by James Beebe and published by AltaMira Press. This book was released on 2001-07-20 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A newer edition of this book is available at the following address: https://rowman.com/ISBN/9780759123212 Rapid Assessment Process (RAP) has gone under many names but invariably uses the techniques of fieldwork and ethnography in a telescoped manner to provide solid, field-based research findings for use by policymakers and program planners. It uses an emic perspective, a team of researchers, triangulation of research findings, and iterative process to produce high-quality research in a fraction of the time taken by traditional ethnography. Long used for third world projects, RAP is now being used to inform policy in many different settings. This volume is the first introduction to this group of methods, explaining to researchers and to students how to do RAP research well. The author, an international development professional who has been doing RAP studies for over two decades, clearly outlines the process, promise and pitfalls of RAP in this brief volume. Included are many examples of successful RAP studies and clear guidance to readers on how to embark on their own RAP research.

Book GI for Disaster Management

Download or read book GI for Disaster Management written by Orhan Altan and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-01-20 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, disasters such as storms, floods, fires, volcanoes, earthquakes, and epidemics cause thousands of casualties and tremendous damage to property around the world, displacing tens of thousands of people from their homes and destroying their livelihoods. The majority of these casualties and property loss could be prevented if better information were available regarding the onset and course of such disasters. Several remote sensing technologies, such as meteorological and Earth observation satellites, communication satellites, and satellite-based positioning, supported by geoinformation technologies, offer the potential to contribute to improved prediction and monitoring of potential hazards, risk mitigation, and disaster management which, in turn, would lead to sharp reductions in losses to life and property. This book explores most of the scientific issues related to spatially supported disaster management and its integration with geographical information system technologies in different disaster examples and scales. Dealing with disasters over space and time represents a long-lasting theme, now approached by means of innovative techniques and modelling approaches. Several priorities for actions are outlined toward preventing new and reduce existing disaster risks, including understanding disaster risk, strengthening disaster risk governance for management of disaster risk, investing in disaster reduction for resilience, and enhancing disaster preparedness for effective response. This book presents ideas to address the challenges facing different components of spatial patterns related to ecological processes, and the published articles extended versions of selected presentations from the Gi4DM Conference in 2019 in Prague.
