Book Reinventing a Small Worldly City

Download or read book Reinventing a Small Worldly City written by Ana Gonçalves and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on Cardiff, the capital city of Wales in the UK, this book reflects on a contemporary small European city – its development, characteristics, and present struggles. Following a century in which it was dubbed the world’s ‘coaltropolis’, the decline in demand for coal meant that Cardiff endured an acute process of de-industrialisation. In seeking to address this and the related high levels of unemployment, it has experienced a process of cultural and social reinvention since the 1980s, and more significantly after Wales turned into a devolved nation in the late 1990s. Cardiff’s development from a small port into a capital city is examined and special attention is paid to the city’s cultural and social transformation in recent decades that has relied on the expansion of specific cultural clusters and tourism, which have been decisive for the transformation of its cultural identity and in shaping the city’s individual and collective memories and identities. Cardiff epitomises a quintessential case of urban reinvention, cultural regeneration, and social transformation, lying between two apparently contradictory paradigms: the need to respond to global demands and the effort to maintain its cultural distinctiveness and Welsh roots. Therefore, it sets the scene for a wider reflection on small cities, especially in the European setting, and what generally characterises these cities: their liveability, cultural creativity and community empowerment, as well as the fact that they facilitate mobility and social interaction. These worldly cities, the book contends, present interesting opportunities and challenges at the urban, economic, social and cultural levels that rely on more human-scale, people-based approaches to cities, thus defying existing urban hierarchies and categorisations.

Book Constructing Industrial Pasts

Download or read book Constructing Industrial Pasts written by Stefan Berger and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, nations across the “developed world” have been profoundly shaped by deindustrialization. In regions in which previously dominant industries faced crises or have disappeared altogether, industrial heritage offers a fascinating window into the phenomenon’s cultural dimensions. As the contributions to this volume demonstrate, even as forms of industrial heritage provide anchors of identity for local populations, their meanings remain deeply contested, as both radical and conservative varieties of nostalgia intermingle with critical approaches and straightforward apologias for a past that was often full of pain, exploitation and struggle.

Book Innovative Measurement and Evaluation of Community Development Practices

Download or read book Innovative Measurement and Evaluation of Community Development Practices written by Norman Walzer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding innovative and useful measurement practices for community development projects is gaining in importance as policymakers increase the demands for accountability. This book examines some of the latest efforts to document the effectiveness of local development efforts. The types of documentation differ by types of project, jurisdiction, and country but they have a common focus of recognizing the importance of the Community Capitals framework. Public agencies in the past have often measured development successes by the number of jobs created and/or amount of private investment forthcoming. However, the impacts of community development reach much deeper than those indicators. Strengthening local decision-making capacity is a common component of development efforts as is engaging populations that, in the past, have not been active in decision-making. These and other considerations are explored in more detail by authors in this volume. Local policymakers and practitioners will be continually pressured to provide more documentation of outcomes and readers will gain considerable insights into alternative approaches that can be included in projects but can also see the common elements needed to create a solid measurement system. International insights are a special strength of the discussions in this book. This book was published as a special issue of Community Development.

Book Sustainable Water Resource Development Using Coastal Reservoirs

Download or read book Sustainable Water Resource Development Using Coastal Reservoirs written by T.G. Sitharam and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastal reservoirs are viewed in many regions of the world as an emerging concept of storing fresh water when the river basin is in flood. Similar reservoirs (or impoundments) can be used to generate tidal renewable energy and/or provide the catalysis for urban regeneration. Constructed near the coast in natural river basins, these reservoirs have a smaller environmental footprint and are less obstructive than inland dams. Written by an international group of Civil, Environmental, and Geotechnical Engineers, Sustainable Water Resource Development using Coastal Reservoirs discusses the latest research and breakthroughs in their use, while offering expert advice into their sustainable design and construction. The perfect reference for researchers exploring the feasibility of this emerging technology or experienced professionals who wish to implement this technology as a water scarcity solution or a tidal renewable energy source or for urban regeneration, Sustainable Water Resource Development using Coastal Reservoirs provides an expert resource to the design, construction and use of coastal reservoirs. The reference begins with a brief but readable examination of water quantity, quality design and geotechnical considerations. The book includes international case studies to clearly illustrate the various uses, design, planning, construction, and operation methods. These case studies include projects such as: Afsluitdijk in the IJsselmeer, (Netherlands), Zuiderzee (Netherlands), Thanneermukkom Bund (India), Sihwa (South Korea), Saemangeum, (South Korea), Chenhang (China), Plover Cove (China), and Marina Barrage (Singapore). Explores the feasibility/design implications for Coastal Reservoirs based on estimation of runoff, detailed assessment of water demand and estimation of water quality Provides design schemes/procedures for the construction and operation of coastal reservoirs Includes case studies to illustrate the design, planning, construction and operations of coastal reservoirs from around the world

Book The Architecture of Wales

Download or read book The Architecture of Wales written by John B. Hilling and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture reflects not only a nation’s history, but also how its people lived, worked, prayed and fought over the centuries. Since the publication of John B. Hilling’s The Historic Architecture of Wales in 1976, there has been no other attempt at addressing the architecture of Wales as a whole, and this revised publication meets a long-felt need for a general survey of architecture in Wales. It covers two thousand years of architectural history, reflecting the nation’s life from Roman times to the present century – less a revision of the original than a complete re-writing, taking into account recent research and recent buildings. The book is illustrated with 268 colour and black-and-white photographs, drawings, plans and maps.

Book Hands On Exhibitions

Download or read book Hands On Exhibitions written by Tim Caulton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-14 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of interactive displays has transformed the traditional museum world in the last decade. Visitors are no longer satisfied by simply gazing at worthy displays in glass cases - they expect to have hands-on experience of the objects and be actively involved with the exhibits, learning informally and being entertained simultaneously. Hands-on museums and science centres provide the most remarkable example of how museums are redefining their roles in society - improving access to real objects and real phenomena, so that they can be enjoyed by more people. In recent years museums have been thrust into intense competition for the public's time and money with all branches of the leisure industry, from commercial theme parks to retail shopping and home entertainment. This has upset the traditional stability of the museum and their visitors. A hands-on approach encourages a broader visitor base, which in turn helps to bring in additional revenue at a time of declining public subsidy. Tim Caulton investigates how to create and operate effective exhibitions which achieve their educational objectives through hands-on access. He concludes that the continuing success of hands-on museums and science centres hinges on attaining the very best practice in exhibition design and evaluation, and in all aspects of operations, including marketing and financial and human resource management. Hands-On Exhibitions provides a practical guide to best practice which will be indispensable to all museum professionals and students of museum studies.
