Book excerpt: It is 1802. The struggling seafaring town of Concarneau clings to the perilous Breton Coast of France and endures Napoleon's increasing taxes and tariffs. After a cholera epidemic devastates Concarneau's population and leaves the town without a healer, Captain Louis Bedard, master mariner and bereaved patriarch, decides to seek a medisin - a doctor - but how can he amass the year's advance salary necessary to pay such a man? Bedard resorts to smuggling and finds himself, for the first time, at odds with the local law. Each month on the dark of the new moon, he slips the wharf and sails under an alias. The work is dangerous; most times he and his crew barely avoid capture by Concarneau's ambitious Captain Peder LaMotte. Bedard's plan works until one stormy night when he is betrayed by a vengeful crewmember and arrested by LaMotte. While Bedard awaits trial in the town jail he thinks his life can get no worse, until his beloved only daughter visits and tells him that she has finally met the man she wants to marry.

Not long after, wind ripped giant white rubber sheets off the roof and sent huge shards of debris flying toward Uptown. Rivulets of rainwater began finding their way down through the ceiling, dripping and pouring into the stands, the mezzanine, and the football field. Without ventilation, the air began to get gamy with the smell of sweat and garbage. The bathrooms stopped working. Many people slept; others waited, mostly in silence.

Book excerpt: Winner of the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize "A superb and immensely important book."—Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post The Second World War might have officially ended in May 1945, but in reality it rumbled on for another ten years... The end of World War II in Europe is remembered as a time when cheering crowds filled the streets, but the reality was quite different. Across Europe, landscapes had been ravaged, entire cities razed, and more than thirty million people had been killed in the war. The institutions that we now take for granted—such as police, media, transport, and local and national government—were either entirely absent or compromised. Crime rates soared, economies collapsed, and whole populations hovered on the brink of starvation. In Savage Continent, Keith Lowe describes a continent where individual Germans and collaborators were rounded up and summarily executed, where concentration camps were reopened, and violent anti-Semitism was reborn. In some of the monstrous acts of ethnic cleansing the world has ever seen, tens of millions were expelled from their ancestral homelands. Savage Continent is the story of post–war Europe, from the close of the war right to the establishment of an uneasy stability at the end of the 1940s. Based principally on primary sources from a dozen countries, Savage Continent is the chronicle of a world gone mad, the standard history of post–World War II Europe for years to come.

Book The Holocaust and the Nonrepresentable

Download or read book The Holocaust and the Nonrepresentable written by David Patterson and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books focus on issues of Holocaust representation, but few address why the Holocaust in particular poses such a representational problem. David Patterson draws from Emmanuel Levinas's contention that the Good cannot be represented. He argues that the assault on the Good is equally nonrepresentable and this nonrepresentable aspect of the Holocaust is its distinguishing feature. Utilizing Jewish religious thought, Patterson examines how the literary word expresses the ineffable and how the photographic image manifests the invisible. Where the Holocaust is concerned, representation is a matter not of imagination but of ethical implication, not of what it was like but of what must be done. Ultimately Patterson provides a deeper understanding of why the Holocaust itself is indefinable—not only as an evil but also as a fundamental assault on the very categories of good and evil affirmed over centuries of Jewish teaching and testimony.
