This book was released on 1987 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years contrastive linguistics has experienced a renaissance. In studies of the German and the English language the fragmentation of interests seems to be particularly undesirable. This bibliography attempts to inventory the contrastive studies concerning the two languages including questions of interference, theory and practice of translation and didactics. The bibliography concerns not only researchers, teachers and students at university, but also practicing teachers in schools and adult education, who are interested in an overview of this linguistic discipline (language teachers, teacher trainers etc.).

Book German and English

Download or read book German and English written by Dirk Siepmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German and English: Academic Usage and Academic Translation focuses on academic and popular scientific/academic usage. This book’s brief is both theoretical and practical: on the theoretical side, it aims to provide a systematic, corpus-based account of current academic usage in English and in German as well as of the translation problems associated with various academic genres; on the practical side, it seeks to equip academic translators with the skills required to produce target-language text in accordance with disciplinary conventions. The main perspective taken is that of a translator working from German into English, but the converse direction is also regularly taken into account. Most of the examples used are based on errors that occurred in real-life translation jobs. Additional practice materials and sample translations are available as eResources here: www.routledge.com/9780367619022. This book will be an important resource for professionals aspiring to translate academic texts, linguists interested in academic usage, translation scholars, and graduate and post-graduate students.

Book Inflectional and Derivational Morphology

Download or read book Inflectional and Derivational Morphology written by Julia Schönmann and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, University of Heidelberg (Institut für Übersetzen und Dolmetschen), language: English, abstract: Generally, Kortmann defines Contrastive Linguistics as the parallel comparison of two languages concerning their language parameters. According to him, it is especially important to identify separate bundles with structural differences and find the relation between them, the so-called “Kontrastbündel” (contrast bundles). Each one of these bundles can be deduced from the construction plan of the contrastive language. In this regard, Kortmann starts his analysis by comparing his purpose of Contrastive Linguistics to its original use. He refers to the fact that in the early 40s till 60s these language differences were considered the reason for the problems occurring when learning a foreign language. Hence, Contrastive Linguistics was primarily important for pedagogical use. The systematic comparison of two languages was supposed to improve the learner’s and teacher’s understanding of the foreign language by for example predicting mistakes often made. In this context, Kortmann sees the previously mentioned Contrastive Hypothesis from Lado as a good explanation for the main factors which trigger contrasts. The Contrastive Hypothesis indicates that similarities between the native language (L1) and the foreign language (L2) lead to an easy and fast learning process whereas differences lead to difficulties and are the main reason for making mistakes. Thus, the basic idea of the Contrastive Hypothesis is the transfer of the characteristics of the native language to the foreign language. Depending on whether this transfer promotes or represses the learning process, it is considered a positive or negative transfer. A negative transfer is also referred to as interference. The most important types of interference are substitution (1), over-differentiation, under-differentiation, over-representation and under-representation (2). Here, Kortmann comments that according to this basic assumption of Contrastive Linguistics only substitution, over-differentiation and under-differentiation can trigger mistakes.

Book Comparative and Contrastive Studies of Information Structure

Download or read book Comparative and Contrastive Studies of Information Structure written by Carsten Breul and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents original comparative and contrastive research into various aspects of information structure (topic, focus, contrastivity, givenness, anaphoricity) as well as into forms and structures whose realisation depends on information-structural factors (clefts, dislocations, reflexives, null subjects, prosodic features, interrogatives) in a number of different languages (Catalan, English, French, Georgian, German, Hebrew, Hungarian). Each contribution emphasises differences or commonalities between the languages under investigation with respect to the realisation of information structural categories or with respect to the information structural implications of a given form or structure. The specific comparative-contrastive perspective of the volume makes a substantial contribution towards a better understanding of language specific and universal aspects of information structure. It raises significant questions and provides solutions for the formal representation and the functional properties of information structural categories.

Dabei werden grundlegende Fragen der Kontrastiven Linguistik geklärt. Der Band spannt einen Bogen über Morphologie und Wortbildung, Lexik und Semantik, bis zur Pragmatik und Syntax. Auch die Übersetzungsproblematik wird erörtert sowie der Frage nachgegangen, wie in unterschiedlichen Sprachen die (kommunikativen) Lasten zwischen Sprecher und Hörer verteilt sind.
