Book excerpt: Excerpt from Deuteronomy: The Words of Moses on the Plains of Moab This lecture was delivered as one of a course upon the Life and Character of Moses, and was prepared with a view to no wider audience than the Free New North congregation. The first few paragraphs will explain the way in which the Deuteronomy question, now so much agitated, was forced upon me, so that I could not with propriety evade it. The lecture was not intended to be a learned or exhaustive discussion of the subject, but only such a view of it as could be presented in brief compass, to a people of Christian intelligence without theological training. It is now published at the request of the members of Kirk Session who heard it, and who expressed a wish that they and others might have the opportunity of reading it at home. Book The Book of Deuteronomy

Download or read book The Book of Deuteronomy written by Andrew Harper and published by . This book was released on 1895 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word "Deuteronomy" derives from the Greek for "second law," and it's an apt name: there's little in this book of scripture that can't be found elsewhere in the first five books of the Bible. But what sets Deuteronomy apart is its format: the book's contents are arranged as three first-person speeches delivered by Moses to the Israelite people as they stand on the doorstep of the Promised Land. Moses recounts the people's experience wandering the desert for 40 years and restates the laws and commandments of God. But unlike the sprawling, complicated stories of the books of Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers, Deuteronomy is focused and compact. "Hear, O Israel," Moses says, giving voice to one of the central tenets of Judaism, "The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might."

  • ISBN : 9780802801609

Download or read book Word and Presence written by Ian Cairns and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1992 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this commentary Ian Cairns presents Deuteronomy as a slowly evolving, complex composite -- as legal code, as treaty text or covenant, as Moses' farewell speech, and as the final volume of the Pentateuch. Despite Deuteronomy's structural complexity, however, Cairns shows how the theme "Word and Presence" permeates the entire book: God is the living Presence who can be encountered and known through his word addressed to each generation in turn. This commentary is unique in its emphasis on the theology of Deuteronomy (e.g., law as "humane instruction") as well as in its modern applications and illustrations from non-Western cultures. Book The Book of Deuteronomy

Download or read book The Book of Deuteronomy written by Peter C. Craigie and published by Grand Rapids : Eerdmans. This book was released on 1976 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deuteronomy is a book about a community being prepared for a new life. Hardship and the wilderness lie behind; the promised land lies ahead. But in the present moment, there is a call for a new commitment to God and a fresh understanding of the nature of the community of God's people. Though the scene is set more than three thousand years in the past, Deuteronomy is still a book of considerable contemporary relevance. The book of Deuteronomy, however, is not only a book of contemporary relevance. It has been, and continues to be, one of the most important and debated works in modern biblical scholarship. - Author's preface.
