Book The Stochastic Economic Lot Scheduling Problem

Download or read book The Stochastic Economic Lot Scheduling Problem written by David Maxwell Markowitz and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stochastic Economic Lot Scheduling Problem: Heavy Traffic Analysis of Dynamic Cyclic Policies We consider two queueing control problems that are stochastic versions of the economic lot scheduling problem: a single server processes N customer classes, and completed units enter a finished goods inventory that services exogenous customer demand. Unsatisfied demand is backordered, and each class has its own general service time distribution, renewal demand process, and holding and backordering cost rates. In the first problem, a setup cost is incurred when the server switches class, and the objective is to minimize the long run expected average costs of holding and backordering inventory and incurring setups. The setup cost is replaced by a setup time in the second problem, where the objective is to minimize average holding and backordering costs. In both problems we restrict ourselves to a class of dynamic cyclic policies, where idle periods and lot sizes are state-dependent, but the N classes must be served in a fixed sequence. Under standard heavy traffic conditions, these scheduling problems are approximated by diffusion control problems. The approximating setup cost problem is solved exactly, and the optimal dynamic lot sizing policy is found in closed form. Structural results and an algorithmic procedure are derived for the setup time problem. A computational study is undertaken to compare the proposed policy and several straw policies to the numerically computed optimal policy. Book Single Period Inventory Control and Pricing

Download or read book Single Period Inventory Control and Pricing written by Emel Arikan and published by Forschungsergebnisse der Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The price-setting newsvendor model is used to address the single period joint pricing and inventory control problem. The objective is to set the optimal price and replenishment quantity of a single product in order to maximize the expected profit. Products with a short selling season and relatively long replenishment lead times such as fashion goods are the most relevant application areas of the model. The focus of the work is the generalization of the model with respect to the modeling of uncertainty in demand. The author presents an analytical and empirical study which compares different demand models with a more flexible model based on price and inventory optimization. She concludes that using a general model can increase the profits significantly.

Book Lot Sizing and Scheduling for Flexible Flow Lines

Download or read book Lot Sizing and Scheduling for Flexible Flow Lines written by Daniel Quadt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book considers the lot-sizing and scheduling problem for flexible flow line production facilities. Flexible flow lines are flow lines with parallel machines on some or all production stages. They can be found in a vast number of industries. A three-phased solution approach is presented that solves the integrated lot-sizing and scheduling problem in a hierarchical manner. The approach is able to handle several important features relevant in industrial practice, such as back-orders and setup carry-over. The developed solution procedures solve practically sized problems in a relatively short amount of time. One of the procedures is based on a novel mixed integer programming (MIP) model, which employs integer variables instead of binary variables. This makes it possible to find (near-)optimal solutions using standard algorithms such as CPLEX. Another procedure uses two nested Genetic Algorithms. An application of the framework in the semiconductor industry is given.

Book An Evolutionary Theory of Economic Change

Download or read book An Evolutionary Theory of Economic Change written by Richard R. Nelson and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1985-10-15 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the most sustained and serious attack on mainstream, neoclassical economics in more than forty years. Nelson and Winter focus their critique on the basic question of how firms and industries change overtime. They marshal significant objections to the fundamental neoclassical assumptions of profit maximization and market equilibrium, which they find ineffective in the analysis of technological innovation and the dynamics of competition among firms. To replace these assumptions, they borrow from biology the concept of natural selection to construct a precise and detailed evolutionary theory of business behavior. They grant that films are motivated by profit and engage in search for ways of improving profits, but they do not consider them to be profit maximizing. Likewise, they emphasize the tendency for the more profitable firms to drive the less profitable ones out of business, but they do not focus their analysis on hypothetical states of industry equilibrium. The results of their new paradigm and analytical framework are impressive. Not only have they been able to develop more coherent and powerful models of competitive firm dynamics under conditions of growth and technological change, but their approach is compatible with findings in psychology and other social sciences. Finally, their work has important implications for welfare economics and for government policy toward industry.
