Book Determining the Role that Self directed Learning Readiness and Internet Self efficacy Have on Online Learning Self efficacy for the Purpose of Increasing Persistence in Online Courses for Adult Learners

Download or read book Determining the Role that Self directed Learning Readiness and Internet Self efficacy Have on Online Learning Self efficacy for the Purpose of Increasing Persistence in Online Courses for Adult Learners written by Darin Gray and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Retention and persistence rates in online courses are lower than that of conventional courses for adult learners. One of the major factors for students dropping out or persisting in an online course was student characteristics at the beginning of the course. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the student characteristics Internet self-efficacy (ISE), self-directed learning readiness (SDLR), and online learning self-efficacy (OLSE) for adult learners. Specifically, the present study sought to determine how independent variables, SDLR (a learning factor in online courses) and ISE (a technological factor in online courses) together influence a dependent variable, OLSE. The study also investigated the individual contributions of ISE and SDLR on OLSE as well as the relationship between ISE and SDLR. The research questions were answered through an online survey instrument comprised of questions from the Internet Self-Efficacy Scale (ISS), the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS), and the Online Learning Self-Efficacy Scale (OLSES). ISS is a Likert-type scale that assesses participants' confidence with respect to use of the Internet to perform certain functions. SDLRS measures respondents' level of self-directedness through a series of Likert-style questions. OLSES is a Likert-based assessment that measures learner control, the learner's ability to learn with others in an Internet environment and the learners' Internet skills with respect to learning. One hundred eighty-nine participants completed the instrument. The data was analyzed using Pearson correlations, a path analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The findings show that ISE and SDLR are significant contributors to OLSE in adult learners. Based on the study's findings, instructional designers of online courses and online learning educators can reduce attrition in online courses by intentionally designing courses to increase students' ISE and SDLRS with the goal of increasing students' OLSE. For existing courses, instructors can assess students' ISE, SDLR, and OLSE at the beginning of a course to identify students who may be more likely to drop the course. The student scores can help the instructor to provide additional support to those students. In addition, adult students can identify weaknesses that could lead them to dropping an online course by measuring their ISE, SDLR and OLSE prior to taking the course. Once their weaknesses are identified, the students would be able to find resources to strengthen their ISE and SDLR."--Boise State University ScholarWorks.

Book Investigating Self efficacy and Self regulated Learning as Predictors of Academic Success in College Online Courses

Download or read book Investigating Self efficacy and Self regulated Learning as Predictors of Academic Success in College Online Courses written by Kellie Lynn Templeman and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Online education has been firmly established as a recognized instructional delivery format. From its inception, the participation in online courses has continued to grow exponentially as many brick and mortar higher educational institutions have expanded their online programs. As students are autonomous and independent learners within these environments, it is important to investigate their motivation and self-regulation as these variables affect their academic success. Substantial research has demonstrated self-efficacy and academic success are related, but less is known about the role of self-regulation in relation to self-efficacy and academic outcomes in online classrooms. This study explored how self-efficacy and selfregulation impact academic outcome in fully online courses. Subjects were 563 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in asynchronous online classes at the University of Georgia. Students responded to surveys on motivational beliefs, self-efficacy and metacognitive selfregulation subscales via the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) and an additional survey that probed for task value and self-efficacy in an online environment. Academic outcome was measured by the students’ final end of course grades. Contrary to expectations, results indicated none of the demographic or subscale measures significantly correlated to academic outcome. Thus, the proposed mediation model of self-efficacy leading to self-regulation, which then impacts academic outcome was not able to be performed due to lack of fit. The study included high achieving students and a narrow margin of academic outcomes, which made teasing out self-efficacy and self-regulation effects amongst the sample difficult. While self-regulation has been identified as an important factor in student success in online courses throughout the literature, the findings of this study reflect a weak relationship between self-regulation learning and academic outcome in a sample of high achievers.

Book Online Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Download or read book Online Teaching and Learning in Higher Education written by Pedro Isaias and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is to explores a variety of facets of online learning environments to understand how learning occurs and succeeds in digital contexts and what teaching strategies and technologies are most suited to this format. Business, health, government and education are some of the core sectors of society which have been experiencing deep transformations due to a generalized digitalization. While these changes are not novel, the swift progress of technology and the rising complexity of digital environments place a focus on the need for further research and novel strategies. In the context of education, the promise of increased flexibility and broader access to educational resources is impelling much of higher education’s course offerings to online environments. The 21st century learner requires an education that can be pursued anytime and anywhere and that is more aligned with the demands of a digital society. Online education not only assists students to success-fully integrate a workforce that is increasingly digital, but it helps them to become more comfortable with the use of technology in general and, hence, more prepared to be prolific digital citizens. The variety of settings portrayed in this volume attest to the unlimited opportunities afforded by online learning and serve as valuable evidence of its benefit for students’ educational experience. Moreover, these research efforts assist a more comprehensive reflection about the delivery of higher education in the context of online settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A correlational study was conducted to determine the relationship between student's general self-efficacy and course satisfaction using the Sherer General Self-Efficacy Scale (SGSES) and the Strachota Student Satisfaction Survey (SSSS). Demographic information collected provided information about age, gender, academic level, and number of online courses taken. Differences in the demographic information and self-efficacy were observed as well as correlations among the questions within the SGSES and the SSSS. Younger female students reported higher levels of self-efficacy with the majority of total respondents having completed four or more online courses. Correlations between effort and capability in self-efficacy were found as well as future enrollment and learning needs. Instructor presence had a significant impact on overall course satisfaction and future enrollment. No significant relationship between general self-efficacy and course satisfaction was noted in this study. Further research is needed to strengthen the current findings and delve further into the relationship of general self-efficacy and course satisfaction.

Book Effects of Student Readiness Training on Self efficacy of Applicants to an Online Self paced Program

Download or read book Effects of Student Readiness Training on Self efficacy of Applicants to an Online Self paced Program written by Brandy J. Breuckman and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although enrollments are increasing, retention rates for online courses remain lower than those in face-to-face courses. In order to improve retention, previous research has investigated what student characteristics most often lead to success, how to improve the areas where students are lacking these characteristics, and what interventions can be put in place to achieve this. Research shows that the self-efficacy of students, especially in a new learning environment, has an impact on their success. One Wisconsin technical college implemented a Student Readiness Training for all applicants to a fully online, self-paced program. In order to see if this program was effective at improving the self-efficacy of their students, a questionnaire was distributed to all students taking the Student Readiness Training over one summer semester. The students were given a pre and post survey containing questions related to their self-efficacy levels in the areas of technology, academics, and online communication. Results show that there was a significant increase in self-efficacy in all three areas upon completion of the Student Readiness Training. This indicates that this specific intervention is effective at improving the self-rated self-efficacy of these applicants. Further research into specific intervention strategies and strengthening of the survey instrument is recommended.
