Download or read book Impact of Hazardous Waste on Human Health written by Barry L. Johnson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Impact of Hazardous Waste on Human Health is a public health official with the unique perspective that only insider status can provide. His book is intended for policy makers, environmentalists, toxicologists, public health officials, academic personnel, and health care providers. The author addresses six themes: hazardous waste issues must be more vigorously examined, site remediation is critical, risk management must extend beyond waste site clean up, disease prevention must be a priority, interagency partnership is mandatory, and the best technology must be applied. Johnson also considers the pros and cons of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) also known as the "Superfund." His years of experience with this law, and countless other issues related to hazardous waste, make Impact of Hazardous Waste on Human Health an important and positive contribution.

Download or read book Veterans and Agent Orange written by Committee to Review the Health Effects in Vietnam Veterans of Exposure to Herbicides (Second Biennial Update) and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-01-05 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Third in a series of six congressionally mandated studies occurring biennially, this book is an updated review and evaluation of the available scientific evidence regarding the statistical association between exposure to herbicides used in Vietnam and various adverse health outcomes suspected to be linked with such exposures. As part of the review, the committee convened a workshop at which issues surrounding the reanalysis and the combination of existing data on the health effects of herbicide and dioxin exposure were addressed. This book builds upon the information developed by the IOM committees responsible for the 1994 original report, Veterans and Agent Orange, and Veterans and Agent Orange: Update 1996, but will focus on scientific studies and other information developed since the release of these reports. The two previous volumes have noted that sufficient evidence exists to link soft tissue sarcoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and chloracne with exposure. The books also noted that there is "limited or suggestive" evidence to show an association with exposure and a neurological disorder in veterans and with the congenital birth defect spina bifida in veterans' children. This volume will be critically important to both policymakers and physicians in the federal government, Vietnam veterans and their families, veterans organizations, researchers, and health professionals.

Book Hematologic Malignancies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Guy B. Faguet
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2008-02-02
  • ISBN : 1592590748
  • Pages : 365 pages

Download or read book Hematologic Malignancies written by Guy B. Faguet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-02 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of Hematologic Malignancies: Methods and Techniques is to review those methods most useful for the diagnosis and subsequent mana- ment of hematologic malignancies. The scope of coverage is intentionally broad, ranging from routine procedures to highly sophisticated methods not currently offered by most clinical laboratories. The latter methods were selected especially to bring into focus recent advances in molecular biology that, since they provide us with strong tools for assessing the outcome of upcoming therapeutic modalities intent on disease eradication, are expected to impact the future diagnosis and management of these diseases. Thus, the c- mon thread among all chapters is clinical relevance, whether sanctioned by past experience or by the expectation that seemingly esoteric research techniques of today will prove clinically valuable in the future. Hematologic Malignancies: Methods and Techniques is primarily a compilation of methods presented in sufficient detail—by authors with extensive expertise in their field—to serve not only as a reference for seasoned research and clinical laboratory pers- nel, but also as a guide for the less experienced. Moreover, the contributing authors also discuss the pathophysiologic bases and the diagnostic usefulness that underscore each method’s clinical relevance. Thus, this volume should be also valuable to clinicians—especially hematologists, oncologists, and path- ogists—often bewildered by an ever increasing flow of new scientific inf- mation, the practical application of which is often either not clearly disclosed or difficult to discern.

Download or read book The Peripheral T Cell Lymphomas written by Owen A. O'Connor and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE PERIPHERAL T-CELL LYMPHOMAS Provides a comprehensive look at Peripheral T-Cell lymphomas, including the group’s unique geographic distribution, underlying genetics, and novel treatments Peripheral T-Cell lymphomas (PTCL) are a diverse group of lymphoid malignancies that develop from mature T cells and natural killer (NK) cells. PTCL represent 10-15% of all cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in the US, and up to 20-25% of cases in South America, Asia, and other regions around the world. The role of different etiologic factors and the variation of geographic distribution makes PTCL one of the most difficult types of cancer to understand and treat. For the first time in a single volume, The Peripheral T-Cell Lymphomas presents a comprehensive survey of this complex and rare group of blood cancers. Featuring contributions from an international team of leading authorities in the various aspects of PTCL, this authoritative text covers biology, epidemiology, classification, approved and emerging drugs, molecular genetics, and more. Detailed clinical chapters address diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of each of the major PTCL subtypes identified in the 2018 WHO Classification of Tumors of Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues. This much-needed resource: Covers the biological basis, epidemiology, classification, and treatment of PTCL Discusses the future of the field, including global collaboration efforts and novel approaches to PCTL Explores the role of biologics in PTCL and autologous and allogeneic stem-cell transplantation Offers new insights on molecular pathogenesis, innovative therapeutics, and novel drug combinations Features contributions from the Chairs The T-Cell Lymphoma Forum: the world’s largest meeting focused on PTCL Reflecting the unique epidemiology and genetic diversity of the PTCL, The Peripheral T-Cell Lymphomas is an indispensable source of data, insight, and references for the medical community, particularly oncologists and hematologists in both training and practice.

This group of viruses includes human simplex type 1 and 2, Epstein–Barr virus, Kaposi's Sarcoma-associated herpesvirus, cytomegalovirus, HHV6A, 6B and 7, and varicella-zoster virus. The viral diseases and cancers they cause are significant and often recurrent. Their prevalence in the developed world accounts for a major burden of disease, and as a result there is a great deal of research into the pathophysiology of infection and immunobiology. Another important area covered within this volume concerns antiviral therapy and the development of vaccines. All these aspects are covered in depth, both scientifically and in terms of clinical guidelines for patient care. The text is illustrated generously throughout and is fully referenced to the latest research and developments.

Download or read book Immunization Safety Review written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-07-02 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By two years of age, healthy infants in the United States can receive up to 20 vaccinations to protect against 11 diseases. Although most people know that vaccines effectively protect against serious infectious diseases, approximately one-quarter of parents in a recent survey believe that infants get more vaccines than are good for them, and that too many immunizations could overwhelm an infant's immune system. The Immunization Safety Review Committee reviewed the evidence regarding the hypothesis that multiple immunizations increase the risk for immune dysfunction. Specifically, the committee looked at evidence of potential biological mechanisms and at epidemiological evidence for or against causality related to risk for infections, the autoimmune disease type 1 diabetes, and allergic disorders.

Download or read book The Epstein Barr Virus written by M. A. Epstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Epstein-Barr virus was discovered 15 years ago. Since that time an immense body of information has been accumu lated on this agent which has come to assume great signifi cance in many different fields of biological science. Thus, the virus has very special relevance in human medicine and oncology, in tumor virology, in immunology, and in mole cular virology, since it is the cause of infectious mononu cleosis and also the first human cancer virus, etiologically related to endemic Burkitt's lymphoma and probably to nasopharyngeal carcinoma. In addition, continuous human lymphoid cell lines initiated and maintained by the transform ing function of the virus genome provide a laboratory tool with wide and ever-growing applications. Innumerable papers on the Epstein-Barr virus have ap peared over recent years and reports of work with this agent now constitute a veritable flood. The present book provides the first and only comprehensive, authoritative over-view of all aspects of the virus by authors who have been the original and major contributors in their particular disciplines. A complete and up-to-date survey of this unique and important agent is thus provided which should be of great interest to experts, teachers, and students engaged in cancer research, virology, immunology, molecular biology, epide miology, and cell culture. Where topics have been dealt with from more than one of these viewpoints, some inevitable overlap and duplication has resulted; although this has been kept to a minimum, it has been retained in some places because of positive usefulness.
