Book excerpt: Tributaries support diverse spawning habitats for three of the four major sub-stocks of Lake Erie walleye (Sander vitreus). Despite a long history of anthropogenic degradation and the extirpation of other potamodromous species, the Maumee River continues to support one of the largest fish migrations in the Laurentian Great Lakes. To determine if spawning habitat availability and quality could limit production of Maumee River walleye, the longitudinal distribution and relative abundance of walleye eggs deposited in a 34 km stretch of river were assessed. Eggs were collected using a diaphragm pump at ten sites in 2014 and eight sites in 2015 from mid-March to early May. In both years, a sharp decline in mean relative abundances from downstream spawning sites than upstream sites at river kilometer 30 suggest that spawning habitat connectivity in the Maumee River is lower than was previously known, and may be limiting production from the system.

Book excerpt: Environmental conditions were used to determine relationships with the nearshore fish assemblage of the eastern basin and to model habitat for different life stages of walleye in the eastern Lake Erie basin adjacent to the outflow of the Grand River. Optimal walleye habitat tended to be found along the shoreline of the lake and dependent on the Grand River plume. Generally, there was very little optimal walleye habitat found in the lower reaches of the Grand River. The nearshore fish assemblage tended to be size-structured and related to specific environmental conditions, such as conductivity, temperature, dissolved organic carbon, chloride concentrations, alkalinity, sampling date and abundances of emergent and submergent plants. Improvements in both biotic and abiotic features of habitat in the nearshore and tributaries will enhance the amount of habitat optimal for specific fish species, and thereby the potential abundance of these fish species.

Excavations revealed an Ottawa bark burial with trade goods, a cabin or shack, and an animal pen or compound. The material culture consisted of a wide variety of Native and Euro-American manufactured artifacts, including trade silver. The bark burial with trade goods is dated A.D. 1780-1809, slightly earlier than the farmstead occupation. The farmstead is connected with the Roche de Boeuf and Wolf Rapids bands of Ottawa that were removed to Kansas Territory in 1832. The Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma are the descendants of these Maumee River Ottawa.
