Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by W. H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 22 (thesis year 1977) a total of 10,658 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 227 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 22 reports theses submitted in 1977, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering

Download or read book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering written by Jay Ameratunga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.

Book Soil Strength and Slope Stability

Download or read book Soil Strength and Slope Stability written by J. Michael Duncan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-09-22 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive guide to the critical issue of slope stability and safety Soil Strength and Slope Stability, Second Edition presents the latest thinking and techniques in the assessment of natural and man-made slopes, and the factors that cause them to survive or crumble. Using clear, concise language and practical examples, the book explains the practical aspects of geotechnical engineering as applied to slopes and embankments. The new second edition includes a thorough discussion on the use of analysis software, providing the background to understand what the software is doing, along with several methods of manual analysis that allow readers to verify software results. The book also includes a new case study about Hurricane Katrina failures at 17th Street and London Avenue Canal, plus additional case studies that frame the principles and techniques described. Slope stability is a critical element of geotechnical engineering, involved in virtually every civil engineering project, especially highway development. Soil Strength and Slope Stability fills the gap in industry literature by providing practical information on the subject without including extraneous theory that may distract from the application. This balanced approach provides clear guidance for professionals in the field, while remaining comprehensive enough for use as a graduate-level text. Topics include: Mechanics of soil and limit equilibrium procedures Analyzing slope stability, rapid drawdown, and partial consolidation Safety, reliability, and stability analyses Reinforced slopes, stabilization, and repair The book also describes examples and causes of slope failure and stability conditions for analysis, and includes an appendix of slope stability charts. Given how vital slope stability is to public safety, a comprehensive resource for analysis and practical action is a valuable tool. Soil Strength and Slope Stability is the definitive guide to the subject, proving useful both in the classroom and in the field.

Book Vane Shear Behavior of Soft Bangkok Clay

Download or read book Vane Shear Behavior of Soft Bangkok Clay written by TH. Seah and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field vane shear test is one of the most common in situ tests to obtain the undrained shear strength of soft clay. Uncoupling of the torque generated by the soil resistance along the vertical and horizontal planes of the vane has been done by conducting conventional direct shear test and newly developed vertical direct shear test on the soil. From the shear stress-displacement relationship of the direct shear tests, simple analysis is performed to simulate the field vane behavior at various depths. The results of the simulation agree well with those obtained from the field vane tests on soft Bangkok clay. The conventional method of computing the undrained shear strength of the field vane shear based on the maximum torque is close to the equivalent average value from the shear box tests. A special laboratory triaxial vane apparatus was also used to study the shearing behavior of the soft clay with the capability of Ko-consolidating the sample before conducting the vane shear test. The results of the triaxial vane tests were also compared with the predictions. The predicted torque values are lower than the experimental data for the same angle of rotation.

Book A Comparison of Vane Shear Strengths Measured at Two High Rotation Rates on Natural Marine Samples

Download or read book A Comparison of Vane Shear Strengths Measured at Two High Rotation Rates on Natural Marine Samples written by Alexander Donnan Smith and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between natural shear strengths measured at arbitrary rotation rates of 6 and 23 m.rad/s (21 and 79 deg/min) was developed using laboratory vane test values from 56 marine core samples from the Wilkinson Basin, Gulf of Maine; Exuma Sound, Bahamas; Gulf of Mexico; San Diego Trough; and Golfo San Matias, Argentina. Results of linear least squares regression analyses show that the shear strength measured at 23 m.rad/s is 4-27 greater than if measured at 6 m.rad/s. The increase was a fairly constant 13% for good quality cores; the extremes occurred in highly disturbed cores (4%) and those with high carbonate content (27%). It was determined that sampling disturbance tends to minimize the effect of rotation rate on shear strength. Average soil types for the core groups were determined using Atterberg limits and grain size analyses. A combination of the regression and soil type analyses showed the relationship of the shear strengths at the two rates is independent of the soil particle size for the materials tested.

Book A Comparison of the Test Results of Vane and Direct Shear Tests Made on Recent Marine Sediments

Download or read book A Comparison of the Test Results of Vane and Direct Shear Tests Made on Recent Marine Sediments written by A. L. Inderbitzen and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shear strength envelopes calculated from consolidated-undrained direct shear tests (hereafter called direct-shear lines) were compared to strength envelopes calculated from vane shear tests (hereafter called vane-shear lines) made throughout the length of a sediment core. These comparisons were made on shear strength measurements from seven recent marine sediment cores. The seven sediment cores used for this study were obtained from the upper San Diego Trough slope in water depths of 249 to 291 meters by Lockheed's submersible DEEP QUEST. The materials tested were classified primarily in the clayey silt to silty clay range based upon grain size distribution. (Author).
