Book Determination of Total and Leachable Arsenic and Selenium in Soils by Continuous Hydride Generation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book Determination of Total and Leachable Arsenic and Selenium in Soils by Continuous Hydride Generation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel gas-liquid separator has been designed for continuous hydride generation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), incorporating a water trap to remove solution droplets from the gas stream. The system has been applied to the determination of total and leachable arsenic and selenium in soils of the Western Cape region of South Africa. Samples were prepared by alkaline fusion for the determination of total concentrations, and leaching with 1 M ammonium nitrate was used to determine the leachable content. Use of the hydride generation system confers a forty-fold increase in sensitivity over conventional nebulization, and eliminates argon chloride interferences. Detection limits were in the range of 0.2 to 1 microg per l. Certified reference materials were analysed, and good agreement with the certified values was obtained.

Book Discrete Sample Introduction Techniques for Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book Discrete Sample Introduction Techniques for Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry written by D. Beauchemin and published by Elsevier Science. This book was released on 2000 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book starts with a detailed description of ICP-MS, including quadruple-based, sector-based and time-of-flight instruments. Instrumentation from existing manufacturers is described and compared to show their similarities and differences. Also, a review of the ICP-MS literature is carried out to outline both the strengths and limitations of the technique, whatever its brand, as well as what it can currently accomplish in terms of applications. Then, the book demonstrates how these limitations can be reduced and/or eliminated by combining various techniques with ICP-MS. Great detail is provided on each technique so that the reader can get a good understanding of it before carrying on to the instrumental requirements for its hyphenation to ICP-MS, and the resulting impact on the operation of the hyphenated instrument. Since this book is concerned with the ICP side only, which is fairly similar in all the instruments from the different manufacturers, the information should be useful to all ICP-MS users. The features and limitations of each technique are thoroughly discussed and illustrated with a review of the ICP-MS literature. Approaches which could be used but have not yet been tried with ICP-MS are also suggested. This is particularly true of flow injection techniques which are extremely flexible and have been used extensively in atomic spectroscopy and spectrophotometry. Many of the features of the technique have not yet been combined to ICP-MS, and one purpose of the book will be to point out potentially beneficial combinations.

Book Simultaneous Determination by Hydride Generation and Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry of Arsenic Antimony Selenium and Tellurium in Silicate Rocks Containing the Noble Metals and in Sulphide Ores

Download or read book Simultaneous Determination by Hydride Generation and Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry of Arsenic Antimony Selenium and Tellurium in Silicate Rocks Containing the Noble Metals and in Sulphide Ores written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is described for the continuous generation of the hydrides of arsenic, antimony, selenium and tellurium and the simultaneous determination of these elements by an atomic emission spectrometer with a 5-kW nitrogen - argon inductively coupled plasma source. After digestion of the sample, the analytes are separated from the matrix by coprecipitation with iron(III) hydroxide at pH 2.40. A standard additions technique is used for quantification. This method is relatively free from interferences and is applied to the determination of arsenic, antimony, selenium and tellurium in silicate rocks containing gold and the platinum-group metals (noble metals), and also in sulphide ores rich in transition metals and lead.

Book Comparison of instrumental methods for the determination of total selenium in environmental samples

Download or read book Comparison of instrumental methods for the determination of total selenium in environmental samples written by P M (Phil) Haygarth and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choosing the appropriate instrumental method for the determination of total Se in environmental samples is difficult, considering the wide choice of methods currently available. By use of a sediment matrix, an objective comparison is made between fluorimetry, hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HGAAS), hydride generation inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (HG-ICP-AES), hydride generation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HG-ICP-MS) and radiochemical neutron activation analysis (RNAA) methods, involving technical criteria such as detection limits, reproducibility, time taken for analysis and interferences. A novel flow injection (FI) system was constructed and adapted for AAS to improve the efficiency of HG systems and shows that the method of hydride sample injection can have a substantial influence on over-all performance. Consideration is given to the definition and use of the term limit of detection. The conclusions of the study are that fluorimetry, HGAAS and HG-ICP-AES will continue to be usefully employed for routine, laboratory analyses, although with the fluorimetric method, performance characteristics are inferior in comparison with those of more recent analytical techniques. The FI-HGAAS method is superior to the single sample HGAAS system. For samples of low Se concentration, HG-ICP-MS and RNAA methods are superior.
