Book excerpt: Using the CLEO II detector at the e[sup+]e[sup -] storage ring CESR, we have determined the Michel parameters[rho], [zeta], and[delta] in[tau][sup[-+]][nu][bar[nu]] decay as well as the[tau] neutrino helicity parameter H[sub[nu][sub[tau]]] in[tau][sup[-+]][pi][sup 0][nu] decay. From a data sample of 3.02 x 10[sup 6][tau] pairs produced at[radical]s= 10.6 GeV, using events of the topology e[sup+]e[sup -][yields][tau][sup+][tau][sup -][yields] (l[sup[+-]][nu][bar[nu]])([pi][sup[-+]][pi][sup 0][nu]) and e[sup+]e[sup -][yields][tau][sup+][tau][sup -][yields] ([pi][sup[+-]][pi][sup 0][bar[nu]])([pi][sup[-+]][pi][sup 0][nu]), and the determined sign of h[sub[nu][sub[tau]]][1,2], the combined result of the three samples is:[rho]= 0.747[+-] 0.010[+-] 0.006, [zeta]= 1.007[+-] 0.040[+-] 0.015, [zeta][delta]= 0.745[+-]0.026[+-]0.009, and h[sub[nu][sub[tau]]]= -0.995[+-] 0.010[+-] 0.003. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model V-A interaction.

Book excerpt: Motivated by the question of missing exclusive branching fractions in tau decays, mostly suspected to be in one prong decays with neutrals, we have studied the decay tau .-->. rho nu in tau pair production by ee− annihilation at .sqrt.s = 3.77 GeV. The branching fraction is measured to be B(tau .-->. rho nu) = (23.0 +- 1.3 +- 1.7)% consistent with known measurements and not offering a solution to the branching ratio question. No eta signal in the .gamma gamma. mass spectrum pointing to a decay tau .-->. eta .pi. nu is obvious. An upper limit on this branching fraction is given.

The analysis uses the 1993-1995 SLD data sample of 4316 {tau}-pair events produced with highly polarized electrons. We obtain preliminary results of h{sub {nu}{sub {tau}}} = -0.81 ± 0.18 ± 0.03, [rho] = 0.71 ± 0.09 ± 0.04, [zeta] = 1.03 ± 0.36 ± 0.05 and [zeta][delta] = 0.84 ± 0.27 ± 0.05.

By CP invariance, the moduli ratio of, and the phase difference between, the two helicity amplitudes for [tau][sup [minus]] [yields] [rho][sup [minus]][nu](a[sub 1][sup [minus]][nu]) decay should equal those for [tau][sup +] [yields] [rho][sup +][anti [nu]](a[sub 1][sup +][anti [nu]]) decay. Formulas are given for a L-handed [nu][sub [tau]], and also for an arbitrary mixture of [nu][sub L] and [nu][sub R] neutrino helicities. Statistical errors are listed for both the case that the [tau] [sup [minus]] momentum direction is not know, and when it is known via a silicon vertex detector.

We study 3-prong tau decays, using the[eta][yields][gamma][gamma] and[eta][yields] 3[pi][sup 0] decay modes and 1-prong decays with two[pi][sup 0]'s using the[eta][yields][gamma][gamma] channel. The measured branching fractions are[Beta]([tau][sup -][yields][pi][sup -][pi][sup -][pi][sup+][eta][nu][sub[tau]])= (3.4[sub -0.5][sup+0.6][+-] 0.6) x 10[sup -4] and[Beta]([tau][sup -][yields][pi][sup -]2[pi][sup 0][eta][nu][sub[tau]])= (1.4[+-] 0.6[+-] 0.3) x 10[sup -4]. We observe clear evidence for f[sub 1][yields][eta][pi][pi] substructure and measure[Beta]([tau][sup -][yields] f[sub 1][pi][sup -][nu][sub[tau]])= (5.8[sub -1.3][sup+1.4][+-] 1.8) x 10[sup -4]. We have also searched for[eta][prime](958) production and obtain 90% CL upper limits[Beta]([tau][sup -][yields][pi][sup -][eta][prime][nu][sub[tau]])
