Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 26 (thesis year 1981) a total of 11 ,048 theses titles from 24 Canadian and 21 8 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 26 reports theses submitted in 1981, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Engineering - Geotechnology, , course: Civil Engineering, language: English, abstract: With growing infrastructure developments in hilly areas and due to economical constraints of using locally available rockfill materials for construction of embankments, practicing engineers must be acquainted with geotechnical response of non-conventional granular soils. These materials are most likely to disintegrate with time due to physical and chemical weathering. In general, the laboratory investigations on durability characteristics of such materials are only made through simple slaking tests. However, studies examining the effects of slaking-induced disintegration of soil grains on the geotechnical engineering analysis and design parameters are rather limited. This is essentially due to the reason that the grains of standard laboratory sands are mostly durable and hence, the stress-strain response is considered to be unaffected by the presence of water. In order to explore the possible effects of deterioration of soil grains on static and dynamic properties of granular soils, a series of consolidated drained torsional shear tests on various crushed soft rocks were performed under saturated and dry conditions and compared with a well reported Toyoura silica sand consisting of durable grains. Due to the sensitivity of crushed rockfill to deteriorate upon water-submergence, test under dry conditions represented the response of a soil with intact grains, whereas a similar test under saturated condition simulated the potential reduction in strength and stiffness of the soil with time. From the grain size distributions determined after each test, a degradation index was defined to quantify the degree of disintegration of grains. Strength and deformation properties determined from monotonic as well as cyclic shear tests were then compared with this index. Possible correlations of water-induced deterioration of soil grains with consolidation behaviour, peak shear strengths, friction angles, dynamic shear stiffness, and volume-change characteristics during shearing were explored. In addition, the effects of confining stress and shear strain level on particle breakage were also investigated. It was concluded that time-dependent characterization of rockfill materials by monitoring the degree of deterioration can be helpful to avoid catastrophic geotechnical failures. Nonetheless, this study is a caution to conventional soil mechanics in which decay of grains and loss of soil strength with time are often uncared.

Book excerpt: The dynamic properties of soil are normally inferred from laboratory tests on collected samples or from empirical relations. The soil properties measured in the field can be very different from those predicted from laboratory tests. It is very difficult to determine directly in the field the variation of the shear modulus and damping with the level of excitation (level of strains). This remains today a major gap in our knowledge and our ability to conduct reliable seismic analyses. The main objective of this study is to assess the feasibility of determining reliably in situ the shear modulus and damping of the soil as functions of the level of strains, developing a method to compute these properties from the measured data and providing practical recommendations for the use of the procedure. To achieve this objective, extensive and comprehensive sets of experimental and analytical studies were conducted in parallel. Some numerical analyses were performed to provide a better understanding for performing in situ tests with the newly developed vibroseis loading systems. In addition, the dynamic response of a surface foundation in vertical vibration were studied. This dissertation mostly focuses on the numerical aspects of the problem while some experimental data are also studied and utilized. Field tests were conducted to estimate shear moduli of silty sands at two sites, the Capital Aggregate Quarry and the Texas A & M University sites. Estimated nonlinear shear moduli presented very consistent trends regardless of the analysis methods and test sites. They showed larger elastic threshold shear strains, 1.5 x 10−3 % for the Capital Aggregate Quarry site and 2 x 10−3 % for the Texas A & M University site, than the mean of shear modulus curve for cohesionless soils proposed by Seed and Idriss (1970). Estimated moduli closely followed the mean of Seed and Idriss (1970) at strains larger than 6 x 10−3 % for both sites. Internal damping ratio can also be estimated if additional data are gathered from in situ tests in the future.

The two most commonly used methods are identified and shear wave velocities by both methods are compared for nine different sites. Considering all of the variables involved in both the test procedures and the soil types, the agreement is considered good. Two newly developed large-strain procedures for obtaining soil properties in situ are also presented. One method is an impulse test which determines with closely spaced waveform measurements the change in shear wave velocity both as a function of depth and strain. The other method is a back-calculation procedure which corrects assumed model properties until agreement is reached between the calculated and field-measured response. Both methods offer promise for the future development of better large-strain field procedures for conducting more complex seismic studies.
