Book Determination of Total Mercury in Crude Oil by Combustion Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrometry CVAAS

Download or read book Determination of Total Mercury in Crude Oil by Combustion Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrometry CVAAS written by BS. Fox and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike many heavy metals, mercury is a long-range air and water pollutant whose load on the environment is increasing. According to published reports, a major source of atmospheric mercury is the burning of coal for electrical power generation. However, certain crude oils may contain up to several hundred ng/g of total mercury. Accurate analysis of total mercury in crude oil is the first step in determining the value of a crude oil and one's ability to process the material within the refinery, while generating finished products. This paper details the use of Combustion Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (CVAAS) technology for the analysis of crude samples and distillation cuts. The instrument described in the report is one of several instrument methods currently being evaluated by groups in industry and government. The use of a boat-inlet sample introduction system allows crude oil and other types of material to be analyzed without acid digestion. The strengths and weaknesses of the combustion-CVAAS technique, along with a year's worth of operating experience, will be presented from the user's perspective.

Book Comparison of Adsorbed Mercury Screening Method with Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry for Determination of Mercury in Soil

Download or read book Comparison of Adsorbed Mercury Screening Method with Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry for Determination of Mercury in Soil written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A field screening method for the determination of elemental mercury in environmental soil samples involves the thermal desorption of the mercury from the sample onto gold and then the thermal desorption from the gold to a gold-film mercury vapor analyzer. This field screening method contains a large number of conditions that could be optimized for the various types of soils encountered. In this study, the conditions were optimized for the determination of mercury in silty clay materials, and the results were comparable to the cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometric method of determination. This paper discusses the benefits and disadvantages of employing the field screening method and provides the sequence of conditions that must be optimized to employ this method of determination on other soil types. Book Determination of Low level Mercury by Cold Vapor Generation and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy

Download or read book Determination of Low level Mercury by Cold Vapor Generation and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A procedure for determining mercury in liquid samples by cold vapor flameless atomic absorption spectroscopy was developed. The optimum parameter values were determined and mercury standard storage conditions investigated. The effect and tolerance levels of twenty-seven ions, including those ions common to Tank Farm Operations and the Synthetic Wastes, were measured. Standard deviation for the procedure is less than 1%. The procedure can be used to determine mercury at the part per billion level in any liquid sample, a thousand-fold increase in sensitivity over current flame techniques.

Book Use Of Different Gold Amalgamation Techniques In Mercury Determination By Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrometry

Download or read book Use Of Different Gold Amalgamation Techniques In Mercury Determination By Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrometry written by Arzu Erdem and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel amalgamation/cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometric system was developed for the determination of Hg(II) concentration in water samples. In the next part, an amalgamation unit utilizing various Au-coated sorbents was constructed and tested in the determination of mercury. Among the new amalgamation materials suggested, gold-coated quartz wool was found to be the most efficient although gold sputter-coated carbon fiber gave also very promising results. Analytical performance of the CVAAS system in terms of sample volume, limit of detection, and without/with amalgamation was also investigated. It was observed that the mercury signal increased with increasing sample volume, as expected. On the other hand, provided that the absolute amount of Hg(II) was kept constant while changing the sample volume, use of amalgamation unit resulted in similar calibration sensitivities. With amalgamation, the linearity and the slope of the calibration plots were not dependant on the sample volume and this property is expected to offer an important advantage since it makes the volume adjustment unnecessary. The limit of detection was also improved with amalgamation. The highest improvement was obtained with 2.0 ml sample volume; the limit of detection was 3.5 times lower (3.5 times better) than that of without amalgamation when 5-times trapping was employed. The results demonstrated that the methodology can be applied to these types of samples directly or after amalgamation, depending on Hg(II) concentration.
