Book Mercury Detection Limits for Prompt Gamma ray Neutron Activation Analysis in Containers of Chlorine rich Chemicals

Download or read book Mercury Detection Limits for Prompt Gamma ray Neutron Activation Analysis in Containers of Chlorine rich Chemicals written by Carl Jayson Wharton and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prompt Gamma-ray Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) measurements were performed on simulated mustard gas (HD) {Cl(CH2)2S(CH2)2Cl} using the Idaho National Laboratory's Portable Isotopic Neutron Spectroscopy (PINS) system in an attempt to determine the lower limit of detection for mercury contamination in ton containers filled with this chemical agent. For the experiment the simulant was homogeneously doped with five different concentrations of mercuric oxide (HgO), namely, 0, 100, 200, 400, and 800 ppm. The measurements were then repeated for three different container types, namely, a DOT type 500X ton container, a 55-gallon standard waste drum, and a cardboard box. To measure the 368-keV mercury capture gamma ray, a 5-microgram californium- 252 (252Cf) source, emitting 107 neutrons per second, was used to excite the contents of a container, and a high-resolution, high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector was used to measure the resulting gamma rays. The spectral data were background subtracted and a least-squares analysis was performed on the experimental data points to determine the minimum detection limit (MDL) using the analysis method of Currie. The mercury concentration detection limit was found at the 99% confidence level to be 10,000 ppm for a ton container, 961 ppm for a 55-gallon standard waste drum, and 661 ppm for the cardboard box. Additionally, the mercury concentration limit was found to be 1,930 ppm, 607 ppm, and 251 ppm at the 95% confidence level in the ton container, 55-gallon drum, and cardboard box, respectively. The sensitivity of the method is limited by the attenuation of exiting mercury gamma rays by the iron wall of the 500X ton container and by the number of thermal neutron capture gamma rays created by the container wall and by the chlorine present in agent HD. To improve the sensitivity to mercury, the chlorine and iron signals would need to be minimized.

Book Determination of Metals in Natural Waters Sediments and Soils

Download or read book Determination of Metals in Natural Waters Sediments and Soils written by T. R. Crompton and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-05-23 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Determination of Metals in Natural Waters, Sediments and Soils provides analytic labs with a comprehensive overview of the various methods available for analysis of metals and serves as a manual to determine metal concentrations in different media such as natural waters, waste waters, sediments and soils. The book begins with a discussion of sampling techniques and preservation and then covers metals in rivers, surface ground and mineral waters and metals in aqueous precipitation. It concludes with detailed information on analysis of metals in sediments. Determination of Metals in Natural Waters, Sediments and Soils provides a foundation for informed action by environmental interest groups and regulators and a starting point for further study by graduate students, professionals, and researchers. - Includes all of the methods currently available to assess metals in water, sediments and soils - Covers metals in surface ground and mineral waters - Summarizes the strengths, weakness and precautions of different methods and provides a table summarizing the methods with reference citations

Book Analysis of Solids in Natural Waters

Download or read book Analysis of Solids in Natural Waters written by Thomas R. Crompton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As only a few books have been published on the matter of toxic materials in water it occurred to the author that a comprehensive volume dealing with all aspects of this subject was overdue. In this book there is a complete discussion of world literature on the determination of metals, non-metals, organic substances, organometallic com pounds, together with organic carbon parameters and radioactive elements in river, stream, lake and pond sediments, marine and estuarine sediments, river and sea fish, crustacea and molluscs, phytoplankton and sea and river weeds. Much very detailed work has been carried out on this subject over the past 20 years and a review of this work is timely in view of the increasing interest to chemists, environmentalists and others concerned with the quality of our environ ment. The presence of organic and inorganic substances in river and oceanic sediments is due in part to man-made pollution, and monitoring the levels of these substances in sediment and sediment core samples provides an indication of the time dependence of element concentration over large time spans. Contamination of sediments is found not only in rivers but also in estuarine sediments and sometimes in oceanic sedi ments, and this sediment analysis provides a means of tracking elements from their sources through the ecosystem.

Book Analysis of Environmental Radionuclides

Download or read book Analysis of Environmental Radionuclides written by Pavel P. Povinec and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to present a state of art summary of current knowledge of methods of assessment of radionuclides in the terrestrial and marine environments. It cover the traditional methods of radioactivity measurements such as radiometrics techniques, but also recent developments in the mass spectrometry sector. The book starts with a short preface introducing the subject of the book, summarising content and philosophy of the book, as well as the most important historical achievements. The scientific topics are introduced by description of sampling methods, optimisation of sampling sites and sampling frequency. The recent developments in radiochemical separation methods using chromatography resins for the treatment of actinides, transuranics and other groups of radioelements are also described. No other book is available covering all aspects of environmental radioactivity measurements, although remarkable progress has been made in detection techniques over the last ten years. At present the new methods enable to carry out investigations which were not possible before, either because of lack of sensitivity or because of the fact that they required too large samples.
