Book excerpt: The problem of accurately determining the positions of stars upon the celestial sphere has always been of great importance in astronomy. A demanding aspect of this problem is the establishment of the position of the vernal equinox and the plane of the celestial equator as the origin of the observed relative coordinates of the stars. In the past, such determinations have rested heavily upon observations of the Sun and principal planets. In consonance with the program proposed in Astronomical Papers, Vol XI, Part IV, 1950, this investigation utilizes observations of minor planets to obtain the origin of the equatorial system of celestial coordinates.
