Book Determination of Compressibility of Marine Sediments from Compressional Wave Velocity Measurements

Download or read book Determination of Compressibility of Marine Sediments from Compressional Wave Velocity Measurements written by William R. Bryant and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of the compressibility of marine sediments is required for the design of adequate foundations for offshore installations. The determination of compressibilities of sediments by standard laboratory tests necessitates expensive sampling. Empirical relationships between void ratios, coefficients of compressibility and seismic velocities have been established by comparing laboratory consolidation tests with simultaneous compressional-wave velocity determinations for clay muds representative of four environments of the Gulf of Mexico. (Author Modified Abstract).

Book In Situ Determinations of the Velocities of Compressional and Shear Waves in Marine Sediments from a Research Submersible

Download or read book In Situ Determinations of the Velocities of Compressional and Shear Waves in Marine Sediments from a Research Submersible written by and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In situ measurements were made of the velocity and attenuation of compressional waves and of velocities of Stoneley waves (from which shear-wave velocities were computed) at six stations in the sea floor off San Diego, California. Water depths ranged from 20 to 1130 meters, and sediment types ranged from medium sand to clayey silt. Sediment densities, porosities, and grain sizes were measured in samples taken at each station. The unique data obtained allowed tentative evaluations of models and equations, and computation of constants, for elastic and viscoelastic saturated, porous media. (Author).

Book Acoustic Compressional Wave Velocity as a Predictor of Glacio marine Sediment Grain Size

Download or read book Acoustic Compressional Wave Velocity as a Predictor of Glacio marine Sediment Grain Size written by Kathryn Moran and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present relationships between the nondestructive measurement of acoustic compressional wave velocity and grain size and show that velocity can be used to assess some physical properties of glacio-marine sediments. For coarse-grained sediments, an increase in velocity is associated with an increase in the percentage of this size range. Within the fine-grained sediment size range, velocity is not an accurate predictor of grain-size. A median grain size of 4 ?m and a sand content of 15 % are the limiting factors that distinguish this fine-grained behavior from coarse-grained behavior. However, in fine-grained glacio-marine sediment, the percent of sand (grain size >63 ?m), can be predicted by compressional wave velocity. Therefore, with further refinement, acoustic velocity shows some potential as a predictor of grain size for marine sediments.

Book Sound Velocity Elasticity and Related Properties of Marine Sediments North Pacific 2 Elasticity and Elastic Constants

Download or read book Sound Velocity Elasticity and Related Properties of Marine Sediments North Pacific 2 Elasticity and Elastic Constants written by E. L. Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the elastic properties of marine sediments from three major environments of the North Pacific: the continental terrace (shelf and slope), abyssal plain (turbidite), and abyssal hill (pelagic). Elastic constants are measured and computed. Discussions cover elastic and viscoelastic models, compressibility, bulk modulus, rigidity (shear) modulus, Lame's constant, Poisson's ratio, density, shear- and compressional-wave velocities, and interrelationships between these and other physical properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of its continuing program to stimulate superior basic research in the marine environment, the Office of Naval Research, Ocean Science and Technology Division, sponsored a series of closed seminar-workshops in 1972-1973. Each seminar focused upon one re search area of marine geology which is relatively new and in need of a critical evaluation and accelerated support. The subjects areas chosen for the seminars were: 1. natural gases in marine sediments and their mode of distribution, 2. nephelometry and the optical properties of ocean waters, 3. physical and engineering properties of deep-sea sediments, and 4. physics of sound in marine sediments. The objectives of each seminar-workshop were to bring into sharper focus the state-of-the-science within each subject area, to effect some degree of coordination among the investigators working within each of these areas and to provide the Ocean Science and Technology Division guidance for national program support. This volume.contains most of the papers presented at the semi nar on the physical and engineering properties of deep-sea sediments. The seminar was held at Airlie House, Airlie, Virginia on April 24- 27, 1973 and was organized and chaired by A. Inderbitzen. The at tendees were invited from among the leading investigators in this field from both the engineering and scientific disciplines. Each attendee was requested to prepare a paper within his area of spe ciality.

Book excerpt: The information and technology necessary to derive a valid geological-geophysical-acoustic model of the sea floor are presented. Two contrasting models are detailed and discussed: one in the Bering Sea which has a shallow-water, high-velocity, hard-sand bottom; and the Mohole (Guadalupe Site) model which has a deep-water, low-velocity, soft-clay bottom. Other models are to be reported in a continuing series. (Author).

Book Surface Wave Methods for Near Surface Site Characterization

Download or read book Surface Wave Methods for Near Surface Site Characterization written by Sebastiano Foti and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Develop a Greater Understanding of How and Why Surface Wave Testing Works Using examples and case studies directly drawn from the authors’ experience, Surface Wave Methods for Near-Surface Site Characterization addresses both the experimental and theoretical aspects of surface wave propagation in both forward and inverse modeling. This book accents the key facets associated with surface wave testing for near-surface site characterization. It clearly outlines the basic principles, the theoretical framework and the practical implementation of surface wave analysis. In addition, it also describes in detail the equipment and measuring devices, acquisition techniques, signal processing, forward and inverse modeling theories, and testing protocols that form the basis of modern surface wave techniques. Review Examples of Typical Applications for This Geophysical Technique Divided into eight chapters, the book explains surface wave testing principles from data measurement to interpretation. It effectively integrates several examples and case studies illustrating how different ground conditions and geological settings may influence the interpretation of data measurements. The authors accurately describe each phase of testing in addition to the guidelines for correctly performing and interpreting results. They present variants of the test within a consistent framework to facilitate comparisons, and include an in-depth discussion of the uncertainties arising at each stage of surface wave testing. Provides a comprehensive and in-depth treatment of all the steps involved in surface wave testing Discusses surface wave methods and their applications in various geotechnical conditions and geological settings Explains how surface wave measurements can be used to estimate both stiffness and dissipative properties of the ground Addresses the issue of uncertainty, which is often an overlooked problem in surface wave testing Includes examples with comparative analysis using different processing techniques and inversion algorithms Outlines advanced applications of surface wave testing such as joint inversion, underwater investigation, and Love wave analysis Written for geotechnical engineers, engineering seismologists, geophysicists, and researchers, Surface Wave Methods for Near-Surface Site Characterization offers practical guidance, and presents a thorough understanding of the basic concepts.
