Book Determination of Atmospheric Transmissivity

Download or read book Determination of Atmospheric Transmissivity written by and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the paper single ended and double telephotometers are analyzed in the light of the Mie theory for the scattering of light by isotropic spherical particles. It is shown that the double ended telephotometer has an inherent possibility of error when used to measure atmospheric transmissivity. The single ended telephotometer, on the other hand, offers the optimum technique for obtaining an error free measurement. The analysis of the single ended device is expanded and by deriving a relationship between the transmissivity the intensity of light backscattered from the atmosphere and the elements of the scattering matrix, it is shown that the atmospheric transmissivity can be predicted by examining the backscattered light from a pulsed light source. An experiment is performed in which a Q-switched ruby laser is used as the light source and atmospheric transmissivity is obtained by measuring the backscattered light. These measurements are compared with simultaneous transmissivity measurements taken on stars by conventional methods.

Book Optical Properties of the Atmosphere Revised

Download or read book Optical Properties of the Atmosphere Revised written by R. A. McClatchey and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of tables and charts is presented from which the atmospheric transmittance between any two points in the terrestrial atmosphere can be determined. This material is based on a set of five atmospheric models ranging from tropical to arctic and two aerosol models. A selected set of laser frequencies has been defined for which monochromatic transmittance values have been given. For low resolution transmittance prediction, a series of charts has been drawn providing the capability for predicting transmittance at a resolution of 20 wavenumbers. Separate sections are included on scattered solar radiation, infrared emission, refractive effects, and attenuation by cloud and fog.

Book Precision Determination of Atmospheric Extinction at Optical and Near IR Wavelengths

Download or read book Precision Determination of Atmospheric Extinction at Optical and Near IR Wavelengths written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science goals for future ground-based all-sky surveys, such as the Dark Energy Survey, PanSTARRS, and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, require calibration of broadband photometry that is stable in time and uniform over the sky to precisions of a per cent or better, and absolute calibration of color measurements that are similarly accurate. This performance will need to be achieved with measurements made from multiple images taken over the course of many years, and these surveys will observe in less than ideal conditions. This paper describes a technique to implement a new strategy to directly measure variations of atmospheric transmittance at optical wavelengths and application of these measurements to calibration of ground-based observations. This strategy makes use of measurements of the spectra of a small catalog of bright 'probe' stars as they progress across the sky and back-light the atmosphere. The signatures of optical absorption by different atmospheric constituents are recognized in these spectra by their characteristic dependences on wavelength and airmass. State-of-the-art models of atmospheric radiation transport and modern codes are used to accurately compute atmospheric extinction over a wide range of observing conditions. We present results of an observing campaign that demonstrate that correction for extinction due to molecular constituents and aerosols can be done with precisions of a few millimagnitudes with this technique.

Book Empirical Determination of Scattered Light Transport Through the Lower Atmosphere

Download or read book Empirical Determination of Scattered Light Transport Through the Lower Atmosphere written by George F. Riley and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transmissivity of the lower atmosphere for thermal radiation from an isotropic source to a flat receiver was obtained as a function of the distance of the receiver from the source and various meteorological conditions. The results of this investigation are based on data taken over ranges from 0.2 to 25 km with values of sigma R between 0.02 and 40.

Book Atmospheric Transmission and Weather Measurements

Download or read book Atmospheric Transmission and Weather Measurements written by Willard L. Derksen and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the NML's participation in Operation TUMBLER-SNAPPER was to measure the transmissivity of the atmosphere and to obtain the temperature, humidity and other weather data which are pertinent in evaluating the results of experiments concerned with the effects of thermal radiation. The atmospheric attenuation of a ground level path indicated serious deviations because of atmospheric boil, dust and refraction effects. Measurement over a slant path, employing a hilltop station and approximating the path of thermal radiation from a nuclear detonation, gave reliable results. Lower transmissivities were found for ultraviolet and infrared wave lengths than for visible light and indicated the need for more complex attenuation relationships especially for spectral energy determinations. The NML transmissometer was operationally successful and was operated unattended in the area at the time of an atom bomb detonation. (Author).
