Book Analysis of Oceanic Waters and Sediments

Download or read book Analysis of Oceanic Waters and Sediments written by Thomas Roy Crompton and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence of concentrations of organic substances and cations in seawater is a matter of increasing concern to the water industry, environmentalists and the general public alike. It poses a threat of possible health hazards for humans, fish and crustacea. Until fairly recently, the analysis of seawater was limited to a number of major constituen

Book Methods in Lignin Chemistry

Download or read book Methods in Lignin Chemistry written by Stephen Y. Lin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An up-to-date compilation of the theoretical background and practical procedures involved in lignin characterization. Whenever possible, the procedures are presented in sufficient detail to enable the reader to perform the analysis solely by following the step-by-step description. The advantages and limitations of individual methods are discussed and, more importantly, illustrated by typical analytical data in comparison to results obtained from other methods. This handbook serves the need of researchers and other professionals in academia, the pulp and paper industry as well as allied industries. It is equally useful for those with no previous experience in lignin or lignocellulosics.

Book Preliminary Investigations of the Association of Organic Material and Carbon Dioxide with Sedimentary Particles

Download or read book Preliminary Investigations of the Association of Organic Material and Carbon Dioxide with Sedimentary Particles written by James B. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The removal of dissolved organic compounds and carbon dioxide from sea water by sedimentary minerals and the subsequent incorporation of both in sedimentary deposits are determined by various environmental factors. The laboratory experiments discussed in this report were devised so as to permit consideration of the effect of type of organic compound, solution concentration, mineralogy, pH, chlorinity, mineral settling rate and temperature on the mineral-organic association in aqueous systems. The investigation was conducted by radiometric analysis with the use of dl-alanine, glycine, aspartic acid, oxalic acid, succinic acid, fructose, glucose ad sucrose, all known to occur in natural waters and deposits. These organic compounds were spiked with their carbon-14 counterpart. The carbon dioxide phase was accomplished in a like manner with the use of spiked carbon-14 dioxide. The minerals under investigation were montmorillonite, illite, kaolinite and quartz, all commonly found in marine deposits. It has been demonstrated that the association of amino acids, dibasic acids and carbohydrates with minerals is primarily dependent upon the molecular weight, structure and functional groups of the compounds as well as upon the available surface area and surface "activity" of the mineral. Impressed on these principal variables are pH, chlorinity and temperature of the system. The total phenomena observed in these experiments can best be explained by the formation of a complex clay-organic gel. The data cannot be explained on the basis of a physical phenomenon alone, and it appears that the triggering for the mechanism forming the complex gel is in part physical and chemical as related to both the organic compound and the mineral. Once the initial system is formed, the growing particles may act as a molecular sieve capable of continuously removing organic material from solution during the settling process

Book Chemical Biomarkers in Aquatic Ecosystems

Download or read book Chemical Biomarkers in Aquatic Ecosystems written by Thomas S. Bianchi and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a unique and thorough look at the application of chemical biomarkers to aquatic ecosystems. Defining a chemical biomarker as a compound that can be linked to particular sources of organic matter identified in the sediment record, the book indicates that the application of these biomarkers for an understanding of aquatic ecosystems consists of a biogeochemical approach that has been quite successful but underused. This book offers a wide-ranging guide to the broad diversity of these chemical biomarkers, is the first to be structured around the compounds themselves, and examines them in a connected and comprehensive way. This timely book is appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate students seeking training in this area; researchers in biochemistry, organic geochemistry, and biogeochemistry; researchers working on aspects of organic cycling in aquatic ecosystems; and paleoceanographers, petroleum geologists, and ecologists. Provides a guide to the broad diversity of chemical biomarkers in aquatic environments The first textbook to be structured around the compounds themselves Describes the structure, biochemical synthesis, analysis, and reactivity of each class of biomarkers Offers a selection of relevant applications to aquatic systems, including lakes, rivers, estuaries, oceans, and paleoenvironments Demonstrates the utility of using organic molecules as tracers of processes occurring in aquatic ecosystems, both modern and ancient
