Book excerpt: The apparent shift of Japan's foreign direct investment from higher- income host countries (such as the United States) toward Asian developing countries (such as China) may create opportunities for sustained growth in these lower income economies. This shift seems to be part of a strategic reorientation that will gradually reduce Japanese dependence on the United States while Japan explores intra- Asian opportunities.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are four major modes through which firms undertake foreign direct investment (FDI): merger and acquisition (M&A), joint venture, new plant, and others. The four modes of FDI are distinct from each other, and each has its own unique advantages and disadvantages. While a large and growing empirical literature examines the determinants of FDI, very few studies examine the determinants of the different modes. The central objective of this paper is to empirically analyze the extent to which the determinants of FDI such as firm size influence the choice of one mode of FDI over another. Our analysis follows a stylized two-stage investment process. First, we look at the probability of whether a Japanese firm is willing to undertake FDI in the United States. Second, which is the innovation of this paper and its main original contribution to the FDI literature, we analyze which of the four modes of FDI will be chosen by firms that are willing to undertake FDI.

Book Foreign Direct Investment in Japan

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in Japan written by Masaru Yoshitomi and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investment scholars and practitioners query why direct participation of foreign firms in the Japanese economy is lower than in any other industrialized country, and what if any policy steps the Japanese government could take to increase it. They consider the lingering impact of the ban on the practice until the middle 1970s, the high costs of doing business in Japan such as very expensive land and labor, and traditional business practices including long-term transaction relationships with suppliers and customers and the long-term employment system. The seven studies were presented at an October 1994 conference in Philadelphia. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Direct Foreign Investment

Download or read book Direct Foreign Investment written by Kyoshi Kojima and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct foreign investment and the activities of multinational corporations are new dynamic elements in the international economy. This book identifies, theoretically and practically, a Japanese model of multinational business operations which has characteristics differing from the American or "anti-trade oriented" type, and casts light on important policy implications concerning direct foreign investment and multinational corporations. By developing a macroeconomic approach to direct foreign investment, instead of the prevalent explanation from the viewpoint of business administration and industrial organisation, this study adds to current knowledge of the multinational corporation. It endeavours to bridge the gap of separated treatments between international trade and foreign investment, and presents an integrated theory from the viewpoint of a dynamic reorganisation in the international division of labour. The book also includes two introductory surveys on the survey of international division of labour and foreign investment.

Book Japanese Immigration as a Determinant of Foreign Direct Investment Latin America and the Caribbean Region

Download or read book Japanese Immigration as a Determinant of Foreign Direct Investment Latin America and the Caribbean Region written by Norie Ogata and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People and capital movements between Japan and Latin America have been noticeable over the years. Nonetheless, little attention has been paid to their relationship. A considerable number of studies have found that immigration is positively related to foreign investments, for example Britain in the US, yet none of them have analyzed the role of immigrants in Latin America. Most of the studies have shown economic and political variables as the determinants of foreign investments in the region. The present paper fills this gap and examines specifically whether immigration, as a social variable, is conducive to the contemporary Japanese direct investment in Latin America and the Caribbean. Based on the empirical analysis using cross-sectional regression model in 39 countries, this study finds that Japanese immigration is positively correlated with Japanese direct investments. The results continue to hold even for investments adjusted for inflation and for the immigration waves normalized by host country population. It adds to the recent findings that ethnic migrant networks may have a role in attracting foreign direct investments in Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Book Foreign Direct Investment in Japan

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in Japan written by Ralph Paprzycki and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign Direct Investment in Japan presents a detailed examination of recent trends of inward foreign direct investment (FDI) and their impact on the Japanese economy. Historically much less open to foreign trade and investment than other major economies, Japan experienced an unprecedented jump in FDI inflows around the turn of the millennium. This book looks at the profound changes in Japan that made this jump possible and considers foreign firms' potential contribution to productivity and overall economic growth. Detailed case studies illustrate that in certain sectors the presence of foreign firms already is a key factor shaping industry dynamics. Yet, despite recent changes, resistance to inward FDI remains strong and the government could do much more if it were committed to attracting FDI. Overall, Japan continues to appear reluctant to embrace fully, and therefore seems unlikely to benefit even more substantially from, globalization.
