Book Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults

Download or read book Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social isolation and loneliness are serious yet underappreciated public health risks that affect a significant portion of the older adult population. Approximately one-quarter of community-dwelling Americans aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated, and a significant proportion of adults in the United States report feeling lonely. People who are 50 years of age or older are more likely to experience many of the risk factors that can cause or exacerbate social isolation or loneliness, such as living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, and sensory impairments. Over a life course, social isolation and loneliness may be episodic or chronic, depending upon an individual's circumstances and perceptions. A substantial body of evidence demonstrates that social isolation presents a major risk for premature mortality, comparable to other risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, or obesity. As older adults are particularly high-volume and high-frequency users of the health care system, there is an opportunity for health care professionals to identify, prevent, and mitigate the adverse health impacts of social isolation and loneliness in older adults. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults summarizes the evidence base and explores how social isolation and loneliness affect health and quality of life in adults aged 50 and older, particularly among low income, underserved, and vulnerable populations. This report makes recommendations specifically for clinical settings of health care to identify those who suffer the resultant negative health impacts of social isolation and loneliness and target interventions to improve their social conditions. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults considers clinical tools and methodologies, better education and training for the health care workforce, and dissemination and implementation that will be important for translating research into practice, especially as the evidence base for effective interventions continues to flourish.

Book Determinants of Living Arrangements of Elderly A Case of Orissa India

Download or read book Determinants of Living Arrangements of Elderly A Case of Orissa India written by Panigrahi Akshaya Kumar and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India has one of the fastest growing elderly populations in the world. Such rapid rise in the elderly population in the country gives rise to several challenges. Lack of ensured and sufficient income to support themselves, absence of social security, loss of social status and recognition, non-availability of opportunities for creative use of time and persistence of ill health are some of the daunting problems faced by the elderly in the country. Providing a decent and comfortable living arrangement continues to be a major challenge. Living arrangements among the elderly was not an issue a few decades ago because the elderly were supposed to be taken care by their families. Along with an ageing population, India is also experiencing socio-economic and demographic changes. Economies are growing, increasing modernization, women bearing fewer children and people are living longer and healthier lives. The effects of these trends on families, households, kin networks and subsequent support for older persons are complex and not well documented. Therefore, in this context, the living arrangement issues of the elderly needs attention because welfare of the elderly greatly depends on it.

Book Aging in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Aging in Sub Saharan Africa written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-11-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In sub-Saharan Africa, older people make up a relatively small fraction of the total population and are supported primarily by family and other kinship networks. They have traditionally been viewed as repositories of information and wisdom, and are critical pillars of the community but as the HIV/AIDS pandemic destroys family systems, the elderly increasingly have to deal with the loss of their own support while absorbing the additional responsibilities of caring for their orphaned grandchildren. Aging in Sub-Saharan Africa explores ways to promote U.S. research interests and to augment the sub-Saharan governments' capacity to address the many challenges posed by population aging. Five major themes are explored in the book such as the need for a basic definition of "older person," the need for national governments to invest more in basic research and the coordination of data collection across countries, and the need for improved dialogue between local researchers and policy makers. This book makes three major recommendations: 1) the development of a research agenda 2) enhancing research opportunity and implementation and 3) the translation of research findings.

Book excerpt: This vital book reports the significant findings of a research project designed to fill the void in the existing knowledge about the incidence of housing adjustments among the elderly and the factors causing them. With great foresight, the authors examine the adjustments the elderly must make in order to remain in the community instead of relocating. The economic, health, demographic, and social support factors that determine the need for housing adjustments are explored, and statistical modeling of the determinants of each of the housing adjustments studied is also included.

Book Social Security and Elderly Living Arrangements

Download or read book Social Security and Elderly Living Arrangements written by Gary V. Engelhardt and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important economic decisions facing the elderly, and their families, is whether to live independently. A number of previous studies suggest that widows are fairly responsive to Social Security benefits in deciding whether to live independently. But these previous studies have either generally relied on differences in benefits across families or cohorts, which are potentially correlated with other determinants of living arrangements, or have used data from the distant past. We propose a new approach that relies on the large exogenous shifts in benefits generosity for cohorts born in the 1910-1921 period, and we study the impact of this change in living arrangements in the 1980s and 1990s. In this period, benefits rose quickly, due to double-indexing of the benefit formula, and then fell dramatically, as this double-indexing was corrected over a five-year period. Using these legislative changes in benefits that the living arrangements of widows are much more sensitive to Social Security income than implied by previous studies. We also find that the living arrangements of divorcees, the fastest growing group of elderly, are even more sensitive to benefit levels. Overall, our findings suggest that living arrangements are elastically demanded by non-married elderly, privacy is a normal good, and that reductions in Social Security benefits would significantly alter the living arrangements of the elderly. Our estimates imply that a 10% cut in Social Security benefits would lead more than 600,000 independent elderly households to move into shared living arrangements

Book DETERMINANTS OF CHINESE ELDERLY LIVING ARRANGEMENTS CORESIDENCE DECISION AND CONCURRENCE OF PREFERENCE EVIDENCE FROM CHARLS 2013

Download or read book DETERMINANTS OF CHINESE ELDERLY LIVING ARRANGEMENTS CORESIDENCE DECISION AND CONCURRENCE OF PREFERENCE EVIDENCE FROM CHARLS 2013 written by Junjie Chen and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper uses the latest social survey data of China’s elderly population, the second wave of CHARLS in 2013 to examine the trends in the changing living arrangement patterns and individual preferences of China’s growing elderly population. It uses multivariate regression models to estimate the effect of individual preferences in the decision-making of living arrangements. The impacts of the elderly individual’s own preference in the decision making of elderly living arrangement are measured by statistical methods. The association between living arrangements and the elderly’s satisfaction or subjective well-being, as measured by the concurrence of the elderly’s preferred and actual living arrangements, are also examined in this study. Models are specified for elderly people by different marital status and Hukou, and take account of the elderly’s previous employment history, pension policy institutions and living arrangement preferences. Findings are that the individual preferences for independent living arrangements are negatively associated with the co-residence rates of the elderly at statistically significant levels, and the negative association becomes more even more prominent for widowed elderly. Since living arrangement is an important indicator of the old-age support and old-age security, the empirical findings are meaningful. Policy implications are that pension and old age security should be equal and customized, with special focus on the rural, widowed elderly, who are most vulnerable and least likely to have their preferred living arrangements as the results show.
