Book Determinants of Market Participation by Maize and Cassava Farmers

Download or read book Determinants of Market Participation by Maize and Cassava Farmers written by Lawrence Olusola Oparinde and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analysed market participation by maize and cassava farmers in Ondo State, Nigeria. The sample was selected via multistage sampling technique. Data were collected from 80 maize farmers and 80 cassava farmers in peri-urban and rural areas. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, truncated regression analysis, T- and chow tests. Results revealed that the extent of agricultural commercialization in rural area (66.6%) was higher than peri-urban (65%) area under maize enterprise, while the reverse was the case with cassava enterprise with 64.94% and 69.35% for rural area and peri-urban area respectively. It was observed that age, experience, cropping system, farm size, land tenure, quantity of harvested output and unit price of output had significant influence on the intensity of market participation by maize farmers. For the cassava farmers, age, gender, farm size, source of market information, unit price of output, land tenure, household size, experience and non-farm income significantly influenced the intensity of market participation. It is recommended that well equipped market centers in various villages should be established.

Book Commercialization of Smallholders

Download or read book Commercialization of Smallholders written by Berhanu Gebremedhin and published by ILRI (aka ILCA and ILRAD). This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on commercial transformation of smallholders makes little distinction between market orientation (production decision based on market signals) and market participation (sale of output). This paper analyzes the determinants of market orientation and market participation in Ethiopia separately and examines if market orientation translates into market participation. Empirical results show that market orientation translates strongly into market participation. The key implication of this study is that policy, technological, organizational and institutional interventions aimed at promoting commercial transformation of subsistence agriculture should follow two-pronged approach: improving market orientation of smallholders at production level, and facilitating market entry and participation of households in output and input markets. Focusing on either may not be as effective in achieving the transformation.

Book Smallholder Agriculture and Market Participation

Download or read book Smallholder Agriculture and Market Participation written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smallholder Agriculture and Market Participation discusses the evolution of policies for smallholder development, including the role of value chains, and the linkages that exist with the Sustainable Development Goals. New, innovative financial mechanisms and linked initiatives are outlined, and their potential to improve the availability of financial services and reduce market transaction costs. Risk management for agricultural smallholders is covered, together with the increasing role of insura nce as a mechanism for risk management among smallholders. Empirical data are used to illustrate the more conceptual work. The last part of the book provides case studies of selected commodity value chain investments involving smallholders in Africa (Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe) and South America (Peru), implemented by FAO. The lessons concern project design and targeting, product and market analysis, regulatory issues, sustainability and improved natural resources management.

Book Agricultural Supply Response and Poverty in Mozambique

Download or read book Agricultural Supply Response and Poverty in Mozambique written by Rasmus Heltberg and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper identifies the key causal factors behind farmers' marketing decisions in Mozambique. A two-step decision making process is modeled. Farmers decide, first, whether or not to participate in the market and, second, how much to market. The model is estimated using a Heckman switching regression approach. Marginal effects are calculated for the poor and the nonpoor and broken down into a market participation component and a quantity (sales value) component. The key importance of non-price factors such as technology, transport infrastructure, farm environment and area characteristics come out clearly. The marginal effects for the poor are not substantially different from those of the nonpoor, suggesting that differences in assets and area characteristics are more important than differences in underlying behaviour. Moreover, inducing farmers previously not in the market appears more important for total sales than focusing economic policy on those already in the market. To achieve pro-poor rural growth it is therefore essential to address explicitly the conditions of high-risk, low productivity and low capital endowments of poor farmers.

Book Expanding Market Participation Among Smallholder Livestock Producers

Download or read book Expanding Market Participation Among Smallholder Livestock Producers written by Garth John Holloway and published by ILRI (aka ILCA and ILRAD). This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compendium reproduces results from several, independent research projects undertaken at the Livestock Policy Analysis Programme (LPAP) of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This reproduction brings together separate pieces of research that relate to the same goals, namely, market expansion, food security, poverty alleviation and hunger prevention. It is to showcase the power of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, particularly Gibbs sampling, in providing direct answers to policy questions. It is hoped that the empirical research showcased in this compendium will spur other researchers to apply MCMC methods and the Bayesian paradigm to the heterogeneous research projects and policy questions that employed research encounters in less developed regions.

Book From subsistence to profit

Download or read book From subsistence to profit written by Fan, Shenggen and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2013-07-25 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This food policy report presents a typology of the diverse livelihood strategies and development pathways for smallholder farmers in developing countries, and offers policy recommendations to help potentially profitable smallholders meet emerging risks and challenges. Main Findings Smallholder farmers in developing countries play a key role in meeting the future food demands of a growing and increasingly rich and urbanized population. However, smallholders are not a homogeneous group that should be supported at all costs. Whereas some smallholder farmers have the potential to undertake profitable commercial activities in the agricultural sector, others should be supported in exiting agriculture and seeking nonfarm employment opportunities. For smallholder farmers with profit potential, their ability to be successful is hampered by such challenges as climate change, price shocks, limited financing options, and inadequate access to healthy and nutritious food. By overcoming these challenges, smallholders can move from subsistence to commercially oriented agricultural systems, increase their profits, and operate at an efficient scale—thereby helping to do their part in feeding the world’s hungry.

Book Decentralization agricultural services and determinants of input use in Nigeria

Download or read book Decentralization agricultural services and determinants of input use in Nigeria written by Akramov, Kamiljon T. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The substantial differences in agricultural productivity between Asia and Africa can be largely explained by differences in use of modern inputs. The evidence suggests that better access to infrastructure (such as roads and irrigation) and agricultural services has given Asian farmers significantly better access to modern inputs, while Sub-Saharan African farmers without such an access are not able to fully exploit the benefits of modern agricultural inputs. This brief discusses the relationship between agricultural service provision and modern input use by farmers in Nigeria, with a focus on the differences among states and local government areas (LGA).
