Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The apparent shift of Japan's foreign direct investment from higher- income host countries (such as the United States) toward Asian developing countries (such as China) may create opportunities for sustained growth in these lower income economies. This shift seems to be part of a strategic reorientation that will gradually reduce Japanese dependence on the United States while Japan explores intra- Asian opportunities.

The importance of understanding the environment for foreign direct investment (FDI) in China has never been more apparent. With this as a context, this book examines FDI in China with the emphasis on the 'where to locate' question. Japanese direct investment is used as a case study elucidating the key locational determinants and characteristics thereof. This is the first book focusing on the 'where to locate' question with respect to the China market. All companies with a China strategy and all university business departments will find this book of vital importance.

Book Japanese Direct Investment in Mexico s Transport Equipment Sector

Download or read book Japanese Direct Investment in Mexico s Transport Equipment Sector written by Melba Falck-Reyes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Japanese foreign direct investment determinants, the close relations between foreign investment and trade flows in the host country, and the effects and responses by the local economy. It provides an accessible and comprehensive view of the overall macro impacts and local effects associated with the increasing flow of Japanese firms to Mexico’s automotive industry. The research and its outcomes presented here follow extensive fieldwork and use unique statistical datasets to integrate qualitative and quantitative approaches to the analysis. Carefully chosen case studies produce an integrated approach to the subject. As a result, the book fills a vacuum on this topic and provides readers with a clear understanding of the complex interactions among participating actors: Japanese multinationals and Japanese parts-and-components suppliers, Mexican local suppliers, government at the national and local levels, and cooperating Japanese agencies. By critically assessing current theories and empirical methodologies the monograph covers aspects related to the creation of regional production networks and their impact on trade patterns of the recipient country, location determinants of Japanese foreign investment, and spillover externalities in host entities. It presents the reader with a comprehensive view of the different levels of interaction between multinational firms, local recipient economies, and local suppliers and the challenges they face to engage in global chains of production. The book is highly recommended to academics and their students who seek to understand the complex international economic relations in the global economy. This compilation also serves as a valuable guide to policy makers, both at national and local levels, as it provides an informed analysis of how to engage local suppliers in regional and global production chains.

Book Foreign Direct Investment in Japan

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in Japan written by Masaru Yoshitomi and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investment scholars and practitioners query why direct participation of foreign firms in the Japanese economy is lower than in any other industrialized country, and what if any policy steps the Japanese government could take to increase it. They consider the lingering impact of the ban on the practice until the middle 1970s, the high costs of doing business in Japan such as very expensive land and labor, and traditional business practices including long-term transaction relationships with suppliers and customers and the long-term employment system. The seven studies were presented at an October 1994 conference in Philadelphia. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Foreign Direct Investment in South Asia

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in South Asia written by Pravakar Sahoo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1990s, the governments of South Asian countries acted as ‘facilitators’ to attract FDI. As a result, the inflow of FDI increased. However, to become an attractive FDI destination as China, Singapore, or Brazil, South Asia has to improve the local conditions of doing business. This book, based on research that blends theory, empirical evidence, and policy, asks and attempts to answer a few core questions relevant to FDI policy in South Asian countries: Which major reforms have succeeded? What are the factors that influence FDI inflows? What has been the impact of FDI on macroeconomic performance? Which policy priorities/reforms needed to boost FDI are pending? These questions and answers should interest policy makers, academics, and all those interested in FDI in the South Asian region and in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Book excerpt: The international flow of long-term private capital has increased dramatically in the 1990s. In fact, many policymakers now consider private foreign capital to be an essential resource for the acceleration of economic growth. This volume focuses attention on the microeconomic determinants and effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the East Asian region, allowing researchers to explore the overall structure of FDI, to offer case studies of individual countries, and to consider their insights, both general and particular, within the context of current economic theory.

Book Direct Foreign Investment

Download or read book Direct Foreign Investment written by Kyoshi Kojima and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct foreign investment and the activities of multinational corporations are new dynamic elements in the international economy. This book identifies, theoretically and practically, a Japanese model of multinational business operations which has characteristics differing from the American or "anti-trade oriented" type, and casts light on important policy implications concerning direct foreign investment and multinational corporations. By developing a macroeconomic approach to direct foreign investment, instead of the prevalent explanation from the viewpoint of business administration and industrial organisation, this study adds to current knowledge of the multinational corporation. It endeavours to bridge the gap of separated treatments between international trade and foreign investment, and presents an integrated theory from the viewpoint of a dynamic reorganisation in the international division of labour. The book also includes two introductory surveys on the survey of international division of labour and foreign investment.

Book Japanese Foreign Direct Investment and Regional Trade

Download or read book Japanese Foreign Direct Investment and Regional Trade written by Mr.Tamim Bayoumi and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1997-08-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine the relationship between Japanese FDI outflows, domestic and foreign fixed investment, and the exchange rate. The results indicate that aggregate FDI outflows have been driven by investment in Japan and the exchange rate, while the geographic distribution of such investment has been influenced by foreign economic conditions. We also find that FDI outflows have a temporary impact on exports but a permanent effect on imports. We find no evidence that behavior with respect to East Asia differs from that with respect to North America or Europe.

Book Foreign Direct Investment in Japan

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in Japan written by Ralph Paprzycki and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign Direct Investment in Japan presents a detailed examination of recent trends of inward foreign direct investment (FDI) and their impact on the Japanese economy. Historically much less open to foreign trade and investment than other major economies, Japan experienced an unprecedented jump in FDI inflows around the turn of the millennium. This book looks at the profound changes in Japan that made this jump possible and considers foreign firms' potential contribution to productivity and overall economic growth. Detailed case studies illustrate that in certain sectors the presence of foreign firms already is a key factor shaping industry dynamics. Yet, despite recent changes, resistance to inward FDI remains strong and the government could do much more if it were committed to attracting FDI. Overall, Japan continues to appear reluctant to embrace fully, and therefore seems unlikely to benefit even more substantially from, globalization.
