Jimmy had spent most of his life in Texas and Oklahoma. Arriving in Regensburg, Germany in December 1948, Jimmy joined the First Medical Battalion of the First Infantry Division. There he finds himself among a hard drinking, hard playing bunch of underutilized American soldiers in a country where there are few jobs and many more women than men. Eventually, Jimmy's drinking lands him in trouble. While he awaits trial on serious charges, Jimmy gets all the alcohol out of his system and gets help from friends he didn't know he had. One of those friends introduces Jimmy to reading books for fun, a new concept for him, and helps him turn his life around. Portland is famous for its rain, hipsters, craft beers . . . and coffee. Sage Caplin has high hopes for her coffee cart, Ground Rules, which she runs with her business partner, Harley—a genius at roasting beans and devising new blends. Sage finds the man’s body in front of her cart, a fatal slash across his neck. There’s been plenty of anger in the air, from longtime vendors annoyed at Ground Rules taking a coveted spot in the food truck lot, to protesters demonstrating against a new high-rise. But who was mad enough to commit murder? Sage is already fending off trouble in the form of her estranged, con-artist mother, who’s trying to trickle back into her life. But when Sage’s very own box cutter is discovered to be the murder weapon, she needs to focus on finding the killer fast—before her business, and her life, come to a bitter end. . . . “Lively characters help propel the intricate plot. Cozy fans will hope to see a lot more of Sage and friends.” —Publishers Weekly

Book Doctor Detectives in the Mystery Novel

Download or read book Doctor Detectives in the Mystery Novel written by Howard Brody and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to offer a critical analysis of one variant of the mystery story or novel—the use of a physician as the major detective. There is little difference between a medical “case study” and a mystery story. The book reviews the works of major authors, from R. Austin Freeman, Helen McCloy, Josephine Bell, and H.C. Bailey, to Patricia Cornwell, Kathy Reichs, Aaron Elkins, and Colin Cotterill, with briefer reviews of minor authors. It also addresses historical (fictional) physician detectives, psychological detectives, and physician detective nonfiction. Physicians and health workers are avid readers of detective fiction and will welcome this volume, which addresses their specific interests. Its critical analysis of books that have long been viewed as central to detective fiction will also appeal to fans of the mystery story.
