Book Nondestructive Evaluation of Stress Using Ultrasound and Pulsed Heat

Download or read book Nondestructive Evaluation of Stress Using Ultrasound and Pulsed Heat written by Wallace L. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique instrumentation was developed for high-precision time -resolved ultrasonic velocity measurement. Such instrumentation is not available commercially nor, as far as is known, has such a capability ever been developed previously. It has a significant potential for materials studies and possibly other areas as well, as for instance noninvasive biomedical applications. It was demonstrated that with such instrumentation, applied stress even of modest values can be detected at depths of at least 1 cm in aluminum. Furthermore, such detection was shown to be quantitative, i.e., the amplitude of the effect is proportional to stress magnitude, and its shape is responsive in the predicted manner to locality of the stress. In view of item 3, below, it is evident that this concept is a viable basis for nondestructive characterization of subsurface residual stress in metals. Methods for data inversion to obtain stress profiles from measured velocity were explored and it was found that two techniques give good results with simulated data and relatively large amounts of additive noise, namely: (a) generalized matrix inversion with constraints and (b) least mean squares parameter fitting. Keywords: Nondestructive evaluation; Ultrasonic sound; Pulsed heat; Acoustoelastic phenomenon; Metal stress. (jhd).

Book Fatigue crack detection on structural steel members by using ultrasound excited thermography Erkennung von Ermuedungsrissen in Stahlbauteilen durch ultraschallangeregte Thermografie

Download or read book Fatigue crack detection on structural steel members by using ultrasound excited thermography Erkennung von Ermuedungsrissen in Stahlbauteilen durch ultraschallangeregte Thermografie written by Plum, Robin Marc and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasound excitation of structural steel members leads to localised energy dissipation at existent fatigue cracks and thus allows for thermographic flaw detection. Essential effects on the defect-selective heating, such as flaw size, plate thickness, crack mouth opening or static preload, are systematically investigated. Laser vibrometry measurements of the crack edges, theoretical modelling of frictional heating and numerical simulations contribute to the understanding of the involved physics.

Book The Application of Ultrasonic Energy in the Deformation of Metals

Download or read book The Application of Ultrasonic Energy in the Deformation of Metals written by Alan R. Rosenfield and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 21 a symposium was sponsored by the Bureau of Naval Weapons on the application of ultrasonic energy in the deformation of metals. At this session, a number of investigators actively working in the field reported informally on the results of their research. The reports revealed that the results achieved by incorporating ultrasonic transducers into conventional metalforming and-cutting operations are sufficiently promising that the technique merits further attention. Data are available to indicate that application of ultrasonic vibrations during metal working can increase speeds, lower forces, and improve surface finishes. All of these results have been obtained without any observed difference in properties between ultrasonically and conventionally fabricated parts. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the proceedings of the 21 st International Symposium on Acoustical Imaging, which was held at the Surf and Sand Hotel in Laguna Beach, California, March 28-30, 1994. These unique and highly interdisciplinary series of symposiums have met at intervals of roughly 18 months over the past 30 some years. In general these meetings are devoted to all aspects and all fields of imaging that use acoustics. The meetings are usually small, with 100 to 200 participants, and stimulate useful interchanges across disciplines. These are the only regular meetings where the major researchers in all areas of acoustical imaging can come together to interchange ideas and new concepts. The Acoustical Imaging Symposiums have long been regarded as the premier meeting of this type in the general field of acoustics. The highly regarded and carefully edited proceedings have been published regularly by Plenum Press. I am proud and honored to serve as editor of the 21st volume in this series. The 21st Symposium was attended by well over 100 participants from some 18 countries. During the three day symposium, 94 scientific presentations were given, 66 as formal lectures and 28 in a poster format. Sufficient time was available during the conference, both following the presentations and informally during meals and breaks, for active discussions among all participants. Over 80 of the presentations have been selected for inclusion in these proceedings.

Book Fundamentals of Ultrasonic Testing

Download or read book Fundamentals of Ultrasonic Testing written by Chunguang Xu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the theory and state-of-the-art technologies of ultrasonic testing (UT), this book examines ultrasonic propagation in solids and its detection applications, and explores the intersection of UT technology with various fields of electromagnetics, optics and physics. UT is one of the most widely used nondestructive testing techniques due to its high performance in terms of detection efficiency and safety. The rapid development of modern industrial products and technologies has created a new challenge and demand for ultrasonic nondestructive testing technology. This book introduces the fundamentals of UT, including sound wave and sound field, interface wave theory and liquid-solid coupled sound field. It then discusses various types of UT methods, ranging from the critically refracted longitudinal wave method to ultrasonic surface wave and ultrasonic guided wave detection methods. Some newly developed UT techniques are also discussed, including phased-array UT, high-frequency UT and non-contact UT. This title will appeal to engineering students and technicians in the field of ultrasonic nondestructive testing.

Book Physical Ultrasonics of Composites

Download or read book Physical Ultrasonics of Composites written by Stanislav Rokhlin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-04 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Ultrasonics of Composites is a rigorous introduction to the characterization of composite materials by means of ultrasonic waves. Composites are treated here not simply as uniform media, but as inhomogeneous layered anisotropic media with internal structure characteristic of composite laminates. The objective here is to concentrate on exposing the singular behavior of ultrasonic waves as they interact with layered, anisotropic materials, materials which incorporate those structural elements typical of composite laminates. This book provides a synergistic description of both modeling and experimental methods in addressing wave propagation phenomena and composite property measurements. After a brief review of basic composite mechanics, a thorough treatment of ultrasonics in anisotropic media is presented, along with composite characterization methods. The interaction of ultrasonic waves at interfaces of anisotropic materials is discussed, as are guided waves in composite plates and rods. Waves in layered media are developed from the standpoint of the "Stiffness Matrix", a major advance over the conventional, potentially unstable Transfer Matrix approach. Laminated plates are treated both with the stiffness matrix and using Floquet analysis. The important influence on the received electronic signals in ultrasonic materials characterization from transducer geometry and placement are carefully exposed in a dedicated chapter. Ultrasonic wave interactions are especially susceptible to such influences because ultrasonic transducers are seldom more than a dozen or so wavelengths in diameter. The book ends with a chapter devoted to the emerging field of air-coupled ultrasonics. This new technology has come of age with the development of purpose-built transducers and electronics and is finding ever wider applications, particularly in the characterization of composite laminates.
