Book Detection of Steel Corrosion in Bridge Decks and Reinforced Concrete Pavement

Download or read book Detection of Steel Corrosion in Bridge Decks and Reinforced Concrete Pavement written by Vernon J. Marks and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Iowa Department of Transportation initiated this research to evaluate the realiability, benefit and application of the corrosion detection device. Through field testing prior to repair projects and inspection at the time of repair, the device was shown to be reliable. With the reliability established, twelve additional devices were purchased so that this evaluation procedure could be used routinely on all repair projects. The corrosion detection device was established as a means for determining concrete removal for repair. Removal of the concrete down to the top reinforcing steel is required for all areas exhibiting electrical potentials greater than 0.45 Volt. It was determined that the corrosion detection device was not applicable to membrane testing. The corrosion detection device has been used to evaluate corrosion of reinforcing steel in continuously reinforced concrete pavement.

Book Nondestructive Corrosion Evaluation of Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decks with Overlays

Download or read book Nondestructive Corrosion Evaluation of Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decks with Overlays written by Dewei Meng and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete corrosion induced by deicing agents can decrease the durability of concrete bridge decks by causing cross-sectional loss of reinforcement, concrete delamination, and spalling owing to the expansion of corroded reinforcement. The installation of overlays can extend the service life of the deteriorated decks. However, overlays present challenges in the evaluation of the corrosion condition of the underlying decks. This laboratory study employed three nondestructive testing (NDT) methods to assess the effects of seven types of overlays on corrosion evaluation for concrete bridge decks. The NDT methods were electrical resistivity (ER), ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and half-cell potential (HCP). The ER method could not evaluate the corrosive environment in the concrete decks through the overlays. The GPR method could detect the corrosive environment through four of the seven overlays. The HCP method could detect the decrease of electrical potential over the actively corroded reinforcement for all seven specimens; however, only two of the seven specimens could be identified as having active corrosion per ASTM C876-15, Standard Test Method for Corrosion Potentials of Uncoated Reinforcing Steel in Concrete . Overlay debonding did not affect GPR and HCP testing results in this study.

Book Performance Evaluation of Various Corrosion Protection Systems of Bridges in Colorado

Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Various Corrosion Protection Systems of Bridges in Colorado written by Yunping Xi and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion of reinforced concrete structures has been a significant problem for many state and transportation agencies since the application of deicing salts was introduced. Much research has been conducted to develop corrosion protection systems that can prolong the life span of reinforced concrete structures. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has several routine and experimental measures to prevent corrosion of the rebar including epoxy-coated rebar, calcium nitrite admixture, organic corrosion inhibitors, a thick cover of quality concrete, and a waterproofing membrane covered by an asphalt overlay. An extensive literature review was performed to collect information on various corrosion protection systems that have been used in the U.S. and around the world. Current CDOT practices in terms of corrosion protection measures were reviewed. A draft inspection plan for Colorado's bridge structures was proposed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion of Steel in Concrete provides information on corrosion of steel in atmospherically exposed concrete structures and serves as a guide for those designing, constructing and maintaining buildings, bridges and all reinforced concrete structures. This new edition incorporates the new European standards as well as USA and other international standards. It also covers developments in galvanic and impressed current cathodic protection, new electrochemical techniques such as electro-osmosis, and stainless steel clad reinforcing bars. The corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete is a major problem facing civil engineers and surveyors throughout the world today. There will always be a need to build structures in corrosive environments and it is therefore essential to address the problems that result. This is a book to educates about and forms a guide to the problems of corrosion, its causes and how to find solutions.

Book A Comparison Between Ultrasonic Guided Wave Leakage and Half cell Potential Methods in Detection of Corrosion in Reinforced Concrete Decks

Download or read book A Comparison Between Ultrasonic Guided Wave Leakage and Half cell Potential Methods in Detection of Corrosion in Reinforced Concrete Decks written by Ahmad Shoaib Amiri and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion of reinforcing steel bars (rebar) in reinforced concrete decks can lead to serious structural issues in bridges. Ultrasonic Testing (UT) methods provide small wavelengths that can be used for early detection of several types of deterioration. The recently-developed Ultrasonic Guided Wave Leakage (UGWL) Method utilizes steel as the waveguide and measures the energy leaked into the surrounding concrete. Previous studies completed at University of NebraskaLincoln demonstrated that the measurements of the leaked energy using receivers from the concrete surface can successfully identify early stages of various flaws such as corrosion, delamination, and cracking. In this method, the longitudinal waves are generated along the rebar by a transmitter placed directly on the rebar, and recorded by an array of receivers on the concrete surface. Previous studies have shown promise in testing stretches of concrete decks as long as 10 feet using a single transmitter and an array of sensors placed 6 inches apart. The primary goal of this Master's thesis is to demonstrate that the recently developed UGWL method has several advantages over the commonly used Half-Cell Potential (HCP) method in the detection of corrosion in reinforced concrete (RC) bridge decks. To achieve this goal, laboratory experiments as well as a pros-and-cons analysis is conducted. Laboratory specimens are placed in a corrosive environment by submerging them in 10% NaCl solution. These slabs were then monitored for 6 months. During this period, UGWL and half-cell potential data were collected every 6 days. After testing was completed, chloride threshold levels (CTLs) were measured on cores taken from the specimens. The secondary goal of this thesis is to develop a quantitative correlation between UGWL data and CTLs, similar to those established between HCP and CTLs in the literature. The experimental results demonstrated that the UGWL technique detected the corrosion activity approximately 21 days sooner than the HCP method. The findings also suggest that chloride content determined after the completion of the corrosion process, which lasted for 6 months, exceeded the standard chloride threshold levels; confirming that the selected method of inducing corrosion in the lab was successful.
